I'm not necessarily looking for critique but feel free to give it if you want. I just wanted to share this scene I wrote. It was inspired by this song- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fa5jWBRvn2U
The context is Kado's home city was destroyed by a powerful enemy along with his house. This isn't a part of the scene but he doesn't know whether his family was killed, taken or if they escaped in time.
Ash and charred earth for as far as the eye could see. Fires raging on the horizon. Forests scorched into nothingness. The river; choked with soot. The sky was bruised with smoke haze and flames. A discoloured blue peered through, pitiless. Death hung in the air and fearful weeping rose to meet it.
Kado leapt off Cyrus. He stared, all thought escaping him and all feeling numbed. All except one word – one question. Why? There, where his home should have been, was the smouldering ruins of a tortured city. Kado struggled for breath and wheezed as ash filled his lungs. The rogue swayed on his feet. A heaviness spread in his chest. A pain that forced him to his knees. The walls had been razed to the ground leaving the shattered buildings bare to the world. Kado’s eyes streamed. From the smoke or from the grief, he didn’t know. He gripped Cyrus’ saddle and hauled himself to his feet. They walked. The horse’s bright coat was dulled by grey snow and his head was low. They hadn’t been fast enough. They were too late.
The wailing was loud and piercing when they approached. The skeletons of structures rose from the destruction. Bodies lay crushed and burned. Some lived. They reached out to him as he passed. Bloody and filthy. He ignored them and continued on. His feet seemed to know where to go. Red and grey. Stone cobbles painted with annihilation. The tears fell faster until he stopped. Kado found himself standing in front of nothing. Charcoal still glowed red-hot. But there was something. In the centre, untouched by fire, sat a tooth. The long, pointed tooth of a snow lion. Kado picked it up. The surface was warm and smooth. A part of him felt a pang of what could have been home-sickness. Another raged like the inferno surrounding him. Electricity crackled around the tooth. It struck, the tooth splitting down the middle. He curled his fingers around it. Monster.
