I am a straight female that knows basically nothing about men. However, I currently have a gay relationship that I plan to write (cause they're just written perfect for each other). So I guess I'm asking how do I write their romance. Is it any different from writing a straight relationship?
It shouldn't be that much different, though you should take into account possible hate/descrimination, coming out to friends and family, ect.
If you need experience I highly advise doing what I did/am doing as a solution. Find someone who knows how to write gayness, and do an RP with them, then try doing a few on your own till you feel confident!
Oh I actually wonder about this as well… my main couple in my latest story are gay males and I feel like I might have messed up a bit while writing about them…
Thx That actually makes a lot of sense. Can't believe I didn't think of that @starry lol

You're welcome! Honestly if you need to practice any style or aspect of writjng go Roleplay! It's fun and effective!
When roleplaying a gay guy couple, one is always usually more femenine than the other, so you might want to take that into account.

Not true! Local queer to the rescue! Ask me questions please!
Look, the "feminine gay guy" myth is. Not helpful. And honestly forces heteronormative culture and expectations onto the relationship.
(Look at me, answering old forums for people who probably don't remember they exist lmao)
A breakdown:
Gender identity and expression is totally arbitrary. My teacher in our local community center pottery class is "manlier" (see: acting in a more traditionally masculine way) than her own husband, and I've met him a few times, he's fairly manly and also does bridwatching- ANYWAYS.
I am so glad you want to learn about queer identity! Look, first of all, there are some stereotypes, especially relating to sex, but I won't get into anything explicit here because notebook.
There's a general assumption mainly due to a lot of dubiosly-ethical porn that there's a more dominant, "masculine", "top", and then a submissive, "feminine", "bottom" but that's simply not true. While that can be the case it's a gross misrepresentation of actual gay relationships and a harmful stereotype. While it can be done with nuance, it's best to not really deal with that if you aren't a gay man yourself.
Honestly I recommend asking around, talking to gay men and learning about the community, as well as reading blogs made to answer people's questions on the subject. Just make sure that they're credible, meaning run by a gay man invested in the queer community, and to figure out how gay culture is different based on race, age, country, occupation, religion, family background, etc. as well as knowing what stereotypes to avoid (some gay men do fall into stereotypes! But if you wanna even touch anything remotely stereotypical DO IT WITH NUANCE. DON'T MAKE A BLAND CARICATURE OR I'LL STEAL YOUR KNEECAPS).
Anyways if you have more questions I'm happy to answer them! I'm not a gay man myself and while I am transmasculine, I don't really have the same experiences and my info can only go so far.
@allthegoodusernamesweretaken wow! thank you so much. I started this forum over a year ago so I've definitely been able to get some new information already but this helps a lot! tysm!
No problem, love. Just spreading around the gay thoughts and feelings I do be having.
I have a step by step process I tell people:
-
Go onto Webtoon
-
Find a good BL story (castle swimmers, Quality Content, Encore, Stare Down, To the Stars and Back, heartstopper some on my favs)
-
Read it (or some of it)
-
Take examples from that! Or go to barnes and nobles and find a gay book. (I recomend song of Achilles or if this gets out) or you could watch an anime (Sasaki to miyano, Sk8 the infinity, yuri on ice, etc)
Basically find an example. Or go on tumblr

how about instead of… this you just write them like a normal fkn couple
instead of grossly fetishized
That too. But for real not all webtoons are like boyfriends. But that is just my opinion and I respect yours :)
God, 2019 me was straight AND CIS???? Idk how I ever survived…
Thank you all for the advice even though most of this thread is deleted users. I don't even remember what story this was for anymore…. lol
