Daphne stood by the doors of Suncrest Academy, her backpack slung over her shoulder. Just go in. It’s not a big deal.

Except it was a big deal. She’s never been to an actual school before. And she was starting ninth grade at sixteen years old. Would everyone else think she was dumb? Probably. And she couldn’t blame them; she should be a junior by now, but she was pushed back because she was so behind in homeschool…

At least she was somewhere other than home. If she could really call it a home…

Daphne took a deep breath, then walked into the school.

Immediately, she feels overwhelmed. She’s surrounded by people, and of course they’re all being very, very loud. She fumbled in her backpack for her headphones, trying her best to avoid running into anyone.

That had failed, miserably.

Daphne yelled in surprise after someone came from behind her and practically shoved her out of the way. “Shit-!”

”Watch where you’re going, idiot!”

She stumbled and fell over, dropping her backpack. The contents of it spilled out a bit. “Sorry…”

Resh pulled his backpack out of his car and shut the door, not even bothering to wear the backpack. “Just one more year and I’m out of here.” He grinned at himself in the reflection of the window, then turned and jogged towards the familiar doors to Suncrest.

He’s gone to this school practically his whole life. Since sixth grade, anyway. But that probably counts.

He pushed himself through the crowds with ease, but something caught his eye… or, more accurately, someone.

A girl, who looked about a year or two younger than him, sitting on the ground and picking her things up off the ground. Perfect, people are already treating the new kids like shit.

He walked over to the girl, crouching down next to her and helping her pick up her things, without saying a single word.

Daphne looked up in confusion. “Uh-“

Resh glanced at her and gave her a lopsided smile. “Hey. You okay?” He quickly zipped up her backpack and handed it to her, then stood up and offered his hand.

Daphne stared at Resh for a moment, then awkwardly takes his hand and pulls herself back up. “Thanks… I’m fine.” She avoided eye contact and spoke in a near whisper, it was a miracle that Resh heard her in the loud hallway.

Resh looked down at Daphne and tilted his head. “You new here? I haven’t seen your face before.”

“Yeah… I’m a freshman.”

A freshman? This kid looked almost his age. He wasn’t one to judge, though, so he didn’t say anything about it. “Do you need help getting to the auditorium?”

Daphne nodded slightly. “If that’s okay…”

Resh put a hand on Daphne’s shoulder. “Yeah, no problem. Just stay close to me and try not to get trampled.” It was clear in his tone that he was joking.

Daphne flinched away from Resh, which earned her a very confused look, then sighed at herself. “Okay.”

The two of them pushed through the crowds, then eventually made it to the auditorium. It was equally as crowded, but most people were sitting down this time. Resh quickly found some empty seats for him and Daphne, and guided her towards them.

Astrid had hopped out of the car, saying her goodbyes to her brother before walking up to the front of the school where a lot of people were currently gathering to either talk to their friends or try to grab some of the other student's attention to ask where they were supposed to go- or at least the freshmen were.
Almost immediately Astrid was bombarded with some of her friends from the years before, walking by her side as they entered the school. There were a total of two walking with her, the two guys already teasing each other and threatening to shove each other into lockers.

Unsurprisingly, it had been one of her friends who had shoved someone out of the way. The guy calling out to the poor girl in a sort of mocking tone.

There was no hesitation from Astrid as she punched the guy on the arm rather harshly as if to scold him, a frown on her face. He just rolled his eyes as Astrid turned to look at the girl being helped by someone else now. She mouthed a soft sorry at Daphne- an apologetic look on her face, but not being able to do much as she was ushered in the auditorium's direction.

Astrid's group, who had gained three more members, sat near the front of the stage, being very loud already. Her group were some of the kids that were 100% troublemakers and got themselves into deep shit sometimes, save for the girls. One of the girls, the one with blonde hair, was a straight-A student who was considered a "know-it-all", no one really liked how she considered herself smarter than the others. She seemed rather calm, however, seeing how she took these sorts of events seriously, shooting dirty looks at the guys when they were being overly rowdy.

Tseth closed the car door, saying goodbye to his mother and then quickly walking up to the school entrance. He took his headphones out of his backpack, already knowing it would be noisy inside. The music would at least be noise he liked.

Looking around in the sea of faces, he. . . didn’t recognize anyone. Well, he did only join this school in the middle of the last year. And he wasn’t good with remembering people.

He weaved through the crowd towards the auditorium, ignoring the chaotic crowd around him. He sat in a seat a few rows from the back of the auditorium, saving one next to him by placing his backpack on it.

Aelin rolled her eyes as she looked up to see Tseth already walking up the steps to the entrance of the school. Eh, whatever. She closed her car door and adjusted the straps on her backpack.

And then she walked up to the entrance, loosely following in the same direction Tseth went. She recognized a few people along the way, and waved a greeting to them.

But eh, they didn’t bother to wave back. Typical.

She sighed and continued on to the auditorium.

Once she got there, she took a moment to look around for her brother. It wasn’t that hard, since he was one of the few people always dressed completely in black.

She quickly walked towards him, moving his backpack it of the way and sitting in the seat. “You know, if you were going to save a seat for me, we could have just walked here at the same time.”

Tseth glanced at Aelin, taking off his headphones. “Sorry, what was that?” He glanced over at her with a cocky smile. Aelin just looked at him, unamused.

“Never mind.”

As soon as she got out of the car she took one look at the auditorium doors, the hundreds of students gathering around it, and went in the opposite direction.
No. No way am I interacting with a billion students on the first day of school. Oh god, I need coffee. Maybe I can get one before it starts.

She was just about to head towards the library before she realized she had no idea where Ditz was.
Godamnit. 5 minutes in this stupid school and I've already lost her. It's okay, she's probably at the auditorium.

Bell made a beeline to the auditorium, her hair swaying madly as she sped towards its open doors. The auditorium. filled to the brim with students. There was no way she would survive this.
It's okay. They're not staring at me. They are NOT staring at me. It's fine.

When she was safely inside she turned her head to the in all directions, frantically looking for her sister. There. In one of the front seats of the auditorium was Ditz and what must have been twenty other kids she was busily talking to, at the same time. Bell gave a sigh of relief. It was fine. Ditz was fine.

Before she got swept up in the incoming tide of students completely, she took a seat at the very far corner of the auditorium. She put her bag at the seat next to her, hoping no one would sit there.

Carey was fidgeting on the sidewalk, semi-paralyzed by the yearly bout of anxiety about starting school. Less so nervous about the school part, and more the peers both new and old. Her mind was running at about 80 miles an hour, fueled both by nerves and by downing a liter of mocha coffee. like, what if they beat her up in the hallway and point out all of her obvious emotional insecurities!? Sal walks up to her, and she doesn't notice him. "Carey. Carey. Carl. Carebear. Hey?" She seems to be just wiggling in place, thinking. He pokes her in the side of her nose, and she wiggles to consciousness, going, "Whahuh? Oh! Sal! Hi! Sorry, didn't see you there…" Sal chuckles at her sudden bolt of awareness. "No worries, come on, a new year awaits." Before Carey could protest, Sal speedwalks through the auditorium doors. Carey jogs after him.

Sal sits down in a slightly empty portion of the center row, with a pair of empty seats for him and Carey. He scanned the students here, seeing some familiar faces, as well as some new and interesting ones. Hopefully the year would turn out for the best. As he thought this, Carey finally caught up, and flopped into the empty chair. "How are you so faaasst…… You've got too long legs…." Sal smiles and says nothing, pulling out a book as he waited for the welcome speech to begin.
