Maggie pulled up to the building where the Jewels Choir practiced every weekday evening 5-7:30 and on Saturdays 2-4. She got out of her car and stepped up to the main enterance. She unlocked the door and, since it was good weather, propped it open with a music stand, on which she placed a stack of music and a sign with the words 'New piece today! Pick up one' written neatly on it. She headed inside and put her bag down off to the side. She sat down at the grand piano and played a sprightly tune which flowed into a soothing melody that turned into the soft piano background for the group's last song of their last performance.
"Ellen! Ellen honey, sit still!" Grace managed to buckle her squirmy child into the car seat. "I DON'T WANT TO GO TO UNCLE AMAR'S HOUSE!" Ellen shouted, "I WANT TO GO WITH YOU!" Grace sighed, "This isn't up for discussion." She closed the door and picked up a waiting Iris, Ellen's twin sister. She carried her to the other side of the car and buckled her in. Ellen was now quietly pouting. "You're Aunt Yocheved will be there. You like her, right Ellie?" Ellen's eyes lit up. "Yeah! She's not so bad!" Iris piped up. "LET'S GO!" Ellen shouted. "No shouting in the car sweetie." Grace pulled out of the parking lot and drove down the street. After dropping off the kids, she parked in the lot. Grace double checked the address before getting out of the car. "Hello?" She entered the building. "Is this where the Jewels Choir is meeting?"
Maggie quickly stopped playing and stood up. "Hello! Yes it is, how can I help you?"
"I was wondering if I could join." Grace extended her hand. "I'm Grace Weaver. You can call me Gracie."
Steen was sitting in the back of the room. He had his hood up over his head and was thumbing through his phone. He digs in his pocket and brings out a very tangled mess of wire and earbud. He curses and starts trying to untangle the mess the best he could. He soon gives up and just puts in one of the earbuds and turns on some rock music to the point he can't hear anything outside his own world as he closes his eyes. he leans his head back on the back of the chair and crosses his arms.
"Maggie Reynolds, resident choir director," Maggie said with a smile as she held out her hand and shook Grace's. She noticed a boy sitting in the back. "Is he with you?" she asked.
Grace glanced over at him. "Nope. Never seen him before."
"Here's the piece we'll be doing today," Maggie said, teaching over and grabbing a copy of the music from off the piano entitled How Can I Keep From Singing? "If you'll excuse me for just one moment please…" She headed swiftly to the back of the room. The boy's eyes were closed, so she tapped politely on his shoulder. "Excuse me? Are you here for rehersal?"
Steen looks over at the two without moving his head. He raises his hand in greeting but then puts his other ear bud in and raises the volume of 'Natural' by Imagine dragons
Grace studied the song, humming the tune. She smiled. It was a lovely song.
Maggie tapped him again. "Are you here for our rehersal?"
Steen didnt respond for the music was up to high, "You tell me. Parents didnt. They just said stay here." He had a slight British accent
"Are you here to sign up for the Jewels Choir?" Maggie asked cheefully. "There's a spot on the bleachers with your name on it!"
Tori finally found the building where the Jewels Choir rehearsed after getting lost a couple times. She parked then got out of the car. With a smile, she walked up to the main entrance.
Maggie heard someone else pull up. She have up with the boy. If he wanted to sing, he could. She went back up to the piano and played something soft, gently singing along to it.
Lili waved goodbye to her aunt and then ran up the steps of the building, guitar in tow.
Tori saw the music sheets and grabbed one then walked inside.
"How did you know my name in the first place." Steen mumbles. He takes out one earbud and stands, stretches and starts to walk toward the bleachers.
Maggie smiled warmly as more people trickled in and slowly stood in their spots on the bleachers. Her tune changed flawlessly to the music for the piece How Can I Keep From Singing?
Steen sighs as more and more people come through the front door. He was at the edge of the bleachers, removed from the others.
Maggie played the last string of notes and stood up. She waved to the last stragglers coming in and turned to face the group. She looked at them thoughtfully and gestured for them all to move in closer towards the middle.
Steen had his earbuds in again and was staring into space at the ground. So naturally he didnt move
Maggie took a deep breath and walked over to him. "Can you please take out your earbuds?" she asked softly.
