"I…" they struggled to come up with what to say. "I work at the palace because my family needs the money, especially my sister. Her husband left her soon after she had a child, and none of us have enough money to raise the little boy well. Everyone is doing the best they can. The princesses - that's who I serve - are kind, and it pays decently."

"I see." Kano smiled, "We're both in a tight spot, aren't we?"

"We are," they laughed.

Kano led them over to the food table and handed Thayer a chocolate, "I heard they're superb."

"Thank you," she said, trying the chocolate. "It is, try one!"

"I already have!" Kano laughed, and then blushed, "Multiple times, actually."

"I don't blame you," they laughed, taking another.

Kano smiled and then wiped the sweat from his forehead. "It's hot in here, right?"

"Yes, it is. I imagine it's all the candles and people."

""Mhm." Kano nodded.

"Do you want to step outside? My shift doesn't start for another ten minutes."

"Sure." Kano nodded again.

They led him outside, standing by the gates. "In my personal opinion, it's much nicer out here than in the stuffy hall."

"It is." Kano leaned across the railing, looking up at the stars from the dark night.

They followed his gaze, looking at the stars. "It's also a lovely night."

"The stars are like connections. I can block out my surroundings and pretend that I'm at home. Because home has stars too."
