Damascus stared into his drink for a moment. "Fine. I can't promise all the gates will function properly due to the interference the key gave off, but you'll be allowed to use the Court's gate."
Mike dipped his head in acknowledgement. "Thanks. We'll be careful."
Damascus got up to leave, but turned to Arik. "This goes wrong, you know it's on you right? You don't have Dekky to fall back on." He spat "Dekky" like he had tasted something disgusting. He turned on his heel and walked out, leaving a vaguely sad-looking Arik to stare awkwardly at his hands
"Demascus gets more likeable every time I meet him," Mike commented. "Arik, right? It's real good of you to stick your neck out for us. Sorry if it gets you into trouble."
Arik looked up, previous expression replaced with a light smirk. "Oh, don't worry. Glad to irritate Inspa any way I can."
"I'm not sure we were ever introduced. I'm Mike, of the demon hunters." He offered his hand to shake. "I take it you're a member of administration around here?"
Arik shook his hand. "Yes, I'm Dekah's second, and currently his stand in. Pleasure to meet you."
Mike gestured at the others. "I guess you know Pluto, and maybe Asura? And this is Red, she offered to come along and help us out."
Arik nodded. "Yes, I know Pluto. She's rather high up on Molhaven's most wanted list. I've heard of Asura, but I don't think I've had the pleasure of meeting Red."
"Bet your multi-eyed mug I'm on the most wanted. And I'm one of the only people on the list that have taken more than 5 years to catch," Pluto piped up, halfway through a cherry pie
"What exactly did you do, if it's not a sensitive topic?" Mike asked, returning to his meal.
Arik fiddled with with the collar of his suit absently. "Technically, I run the afterlife, or at least helped before Dekah disappeared. Nothing special really."
"Well, sounds like a big job to me. Are there different afterlives for different dimensions, or something like that?"
Arik shook his head. "Not particularly. Sure, it make look different depending on the dimension, but it's all connected to the same system. I was just manager of the outer rings of the system when I was first created. Now I caretake the entire system, with the help of Echo and Advocate of course." Echo grinned, and Advocate rolled his eyes at the other reaper behind his mask
"Huh. Interesting." Mike tilted his head. "So then, who or what created you?"
"Dekah," Arik said. "He's one of the oldest gods. Arguably even the most powerful. Or, was anyways."
"And nobody knows what happened to him?"
Arik frowned. "Oh, people know. I'm certain at least half Molhaven has some idea that he's missing. Inspa just keeps the ones who know the truth quiet."
"This Inspa guy sounds like a lot of fun" Mike said sarcastically. "What's his backstory?"
"She is the horrendous excuse of a dictator that took over after the original Yin and Yang left," Arik spat. "She is the goddess of life, and a sorry excuse of one."
(Oops totally misgendered sorry XDD)
"No offense, but being a god doesn't sound like a very healthy lifestyle."
(naw it's cool lol) Arik sighed. "I may not be a god in the same sense as the others in this dimension, but I can tell you it is nothing but corruption, pettiness, and false promises."
Mike finished cleaning his plate and set it aside. "I gotta say I'll be glad to be around humans again, ordinary as they might be. At least they're fairly predictable."
"Yes, humans seem to be one of the more manageable species. At least they're far less difficult to deal with, despite their tenancy to…meddle."
That elicited a toothy grin. "True. No matter what it is, we just can't leave well enough alone. It's the reason I'm still in business." He sat back. "Well, thanks again for the meal and all your generosity. Pluto, is it there anything else we need from here?"
