Dark smoke filled the air, turning the sky dark as an older woman was being burnt at the stake for an accusation of witchcraft. Cooper stood in the town square as he watched, resisting the urge to grimace at the woman’s shrill screams of pain. There was a terrible smell, most likely one of burning flesh. He had known the woman- he helped her take care of her crops at times. She wasn’t a witch, he was sure of that.
Hazel stood around the corner, watching from behind the wall of a shop. She bit her lip, turning to leave, no longer willing to put up the charade of wanting to watch an innocent woman burn.
August stood next to his family as they watched the woman burn. His father kept a steady hand on his shoulder, constantly reminding him that he wasn’t allowed to walk away from the horrific scene. He kept his head down, refusing to watch the flames consume the poor woman. She had never seemed like a witch, and even if she had been she had never seemed to have malicious intent. This was all messed up to the point of no return.
Raven stood in the town square as she watched silently. After a few minutes she looked away and turned to leave, not being able to watch a innocent woman burn.
Cooper stayed until the woman, who he knew to be Ms. Robins, was well dead and gone. He ran a hand through his hair as he stepped back, away from the gathered crowd. He knew they would dump her body in some mass grave outside of town, but he had other plans.
(I'm going to be on and off for a couple days, but I'll be back soon.)
Khari watched with a small frown on her lips, keeping her hands steady at her sides as she watched the older women continue to burn at the stake. It was terrible to witness, though she snuck a few glances at her brother in an attempt to look away for a few moments. There had been plenty of burnings, though she had spoken to Ms. Robinson once or twice, which made it even harder to see. All it did was bring back memories. As Khari looked towards her brother, Malai, he shared the same hard look as her, though there was something almost thoughtful in his gaze. He better not try anything.. she thought, looking towards him for a few moments before she returned her dark gaze towards the women until there seemed to be almost nothing left of her except for the large flames.
Cooper walked around the crowd, watching the executioner step away from the body- a skeleton and ash being left among the flames. He cleared his throat to get the man’s attention. “Terrible that we had a witch living so close to us, isn’t it?” He spoke up.
The man looked over at Cooper with a wary gaze. “What is it that you want?”
“I worked for the deceased, and her late husband had requested to bury her in a family cemetery. The documentation can be found back in her home.”
“She was practicing witchcraft.”
“And as I said before, that was such a terrible thing for her to be doing- hexing her neighbors at all. But I’m afraid that we would be disrespecting her husbands wishes and breaking a legal document. So, may I?” Cooper finished, feeling as if his lying had paid off just right.
