“Enjoying your meal?” Isobel took another bite, licking a smudge of avocado off her lips. The toast was light but filling, healthy but with a pleasant taste.

Alice nodded distractedly, busy trying to figure out how to hold the burger without everything falling out. She swallowed another bite, and within another 10 minutes had finished the burger and half her side of fries.
Isobel looked up from her half-finished toast, blinking in astonishment when she saw Alice’s mostly empty plate. “Wow, you eat fast. You must’ve been hungry!”
Alice smiled guiltily. "It's actually mostly because I always had to eat fast back home so the others wouldn't beat me to my dinner."
The remark made Isobel pause for a second. “Competitive siblings?”
Alice froze. She bit her lip and mentally slapped herself. You're not allowed fucking slip ups, Alice."Um… Close enough."
Something clicked inside of Isobel’s mind when she noticed the way Alice froze up at her question. Abuse, maybe? Trauma? Hallucinations? “Were you the eldest sibling?”
Alice burst out laughing. "Who said anything about siblings?" She shook her head. "And no. I was far from the oldest."
Isobel furrowed her brow confused. "A second ago, I asked if you had competitive siblings and you replied yes. I was an only child, so I don't really know what brothers and sisters are like."
Alice blinked, thinking about it. "Wait… No. Right." She shook her head to clear it. "No. I said you were close."
"Oh. Sorry. I jump to conclusions a lot.." she apologized quickly, finally finishing off her tea and meal.
Alice shook her head. "Don't worry about it."
She finished off her fries and tucked her hands into her lap.
Isobel checked the time. "I should get back to class.. sorry."
"Oh no problem. What class?" she asked nonchalantly.
"Calculus, if I'm not mistaken." Isobel called for the bill and payed, standing to brush herself off.
Alice stood as well, tucking the information into the back of her mind. "Huh. Well, have fun. See you around."
"See you tonight," she whispered to herself with Isobel out of earshot.
(oh damn)
Isobel waved goodbye, beginning to make her way back to the university.
(skip?)
(yup)
It was finally evening. Alice started walking back to the University after waiting a good 3 hours for classes to end. She stopped walking just out of view of the University and waited for the students.
Isobel was at the back of a stream of students leaving for their dorms. She’d let her hair down so that it obscured her face, hiding her blotchy face. Her fingers tightened around her binders as she walked down the steps, knuckles whitening.
(aaw sweetie)
Alice perked up as soon the first student walked out into the grounds. She immediately spotted Isobel but, couldn't see her face– she'd let down her hair. She didn't move from her spot, looking on.
Isobel was forced to look up when she reached the last step so that she’d know which direction to go in. She ducked her head immediately after, lest someone saw her puffy eyes, but her gaze snagged on a familiar figure— Alice.
Alice retreated into the bush the moment Isobel's gaze met hers. "Oh fuck." She stood perfectly still, praying Isobel would dismiss this as fatigue.
Isobel closed her eyes and rubbed them. She was just imagining things, again.. Opening them again, she saw that the figure she'd mistaken for Alice was gone, it had probably just been another student.
Nice one..
She shook her hair out in front of her face and set off for home.
Alice waited a couple minutes before looking back around. Isobel was gone. She frantically searched the nearby area and finally saw her walking away towards the High Street. She discreetly moved away from the bush to follow Isobel, weaving between shops and people.
The walk home seemed to stretch out into oblivion, each footstep seeming slower than the last. She passed the coffee shop and glanced inside, thinking of Alice, but it was just a reminder of how out of it she'd been when she'd imagined Alice standing outside the university. And she was still out of it..
Isobel fumbled with the zipper of her jacket, drawing it up to her chin and willing herself not to cry until she was safely inside her apartment.
