Alice blinked. "I… um, sorry. I didn't catch that?" She tucked her hands into her apron pockets and look straight at the girl, biting down on her lip. She had stunning eyes.
Alice blinked again.
Alice blinked. "I… um, sorry. I didn't catch that?" She tucked her hands into her apron pockets and look straight at the girl, biting down on her lip. She had stunning eyes.
Alice blinked again.
Isobel's brows drew together in concern. "You apologized to me, but neither of us said anything. Are you alright?", she repeated gently, shifting the strap of her messenger bag higher onto her shoulder. A strand of dark hair fell in front of her eyes, having been pulled free of the ribbon holding it back on her walk here, which she flicked away with a slender finger.
Alice followed the movement of the girl's finger as she flicked her hair out of her face. She then refocused on what she was saying.
"Oh! No, that's just… yeah, no, that's just… it's just lack of sleep. I'm Alice." She gave her a unconvincing smile. "What can I get you?"
Isobel frowned slightly, but decided not to push in case she made her uncomfortable.
"Could I please have a hot cocoa with dark chocolate and no cream, please? And two small cinnamon rolls?"
Absentmindedly adjusting the collar of her white blouse, she shifted on her feet. She was concerned for the girl, Alice, but she also knew that it wasn't any of her business or her job, so she let it go.
"For here or take away?" Her hands automatically entered the food into the cash register. She rocked from side to side, avoiding the girl's gaze.
"For here, please." Isobel tucked the stray lock of hair behind her ear when it fell back across her line of vision. Knowing that Alice would need her name to write on her order, she parted her lips to speak again. "I'm Isobel, spelt I-S-O-B-E-L."
Alice stopped moving for almost full minute. Then, finally, "Isobel. Lovely name." She looked at her fleetingly then turned away to make the cocoa.
(I have to go to bed now. See you tomorrow?)
(yeah sure, goodnight)
Isobel's eyebrows drew together once more. The girl was clearly not alright, but she was hesitant to ask lest she intrude or step over some social boundary. "Thank you. Yours too." She decided to stay silent on the matter, for now.
Alice gave her a nod. "You can go to the far counter to pay. Your drink will be ready in a couple minutes." She turned back the machine, breathing deeply. Calm down, come on. Keep sane. She shook her head, straightened and walked back to Isobel. "Here you go. Sorry about that."
“It’s no problem.” Isobel smiled kindly at Alice, taking her drink and going to the far counter as she’d instructed to pay. Her forehead creased with worry loves as soon as she turned away.
Alice looked up at the clock. 3 hours from the end of her shift. She tapped Mike on the shoulder again, peeled off her apron and retreated to the bathroom.
Without going into a stall, she leaned against the wall and stared into the mirror. Her face crumpled as she stared at her exhausted self.
Suddenly, a jarring pain in her leg. She looked down to see all her scars had reopened and blood was soaking the floor. She let out a small whimper and stuffed her fist in her mouth to stop the noise, the other hand desperately clawing at the injury.
(aw)
Isobel took a seat next to the window, sipping her drink and pulling out a slim black binder full of neatly printed notes. After about half an hour of looking over them, she felt the call of nature and stood up, slinging her bag over her shoulder.
She slipped into the washroom, turning towards a stall when she heard a whimpering sound. Her head turned towards it, and her eyes fell on Alice, clawing at her leg. "Oh my god are you okay??"
Alice looked up with wild, panicked eyes.
"Yes! Fine, sorry I'll leave now," she said in between breaths. Shaking like aleaf, she pulled herself to her feet and started to stumble towards the door, the pain suddenly gone.
Isobel stepped in front of her. “Hey— you’re hurt— sit down— ma’am—“ She put her hands out to stop Alice from falling, leading her back over to the seat. “Are you alright?”
(I'll stay awake as long as possible but if I disappear I'm asleep XD)
"No, no please. They can't see me like this. They'll make it all worse. Please let me go, this can't happen here."
She made herself as small as possible and struggled against Isobel's hold with what little strength she had left.
(Np Lol)
Isobel kept a gentle hold of Alice’s arms. “Hey— I’m not going to tell anyone- you can relax. Now tell me, what’s wrong?” Her forehead was creased with worry. Alice didn’t seem to be physically hurt, there was no sign of injury. But still.. she seemed disturbed.
A quiet, shrill laugh bubbled over and fell off of her lips. Her mind wasn't clear. She inhaled, exhaled, inhaled.
"It's not. It's not a-" Her words were lost to a sharp pain in her side. She pursed her lips and pressed her hands down onto it. "They're scars."
Isobel flinched back when Alice laughed, caught of guard, but quickly drew forward again at her explanation. “You looked like you were in pain when I came in, Alice.”, she prompted gently, not wanting to pry about the scars. She felt a twinge in her heart for the poor woman.
Alice squeezed her eyes closed. "It's not real. Not real." She pressed down harder.
Isobel drew back. “What? Alice?” She studied the other girl’s face, searching for an answer.
She fell back against the wall and her eyes flew open. "What?"
“Alice?”, Isobel pressed urgently. “You said they weren’t real?”
She stood up, barely steady on her feet. " I'm eveow."
She bit down in her lip, focusing on the pain to clear her mind. "Leave now. I'm going to leave now."
