Jake walked diligently at her side, taking care as he carried her books.
Max quietly followed them, glancing at the clock to make sure they weren't late to class.
They made their way through the crowd until they made it to Jess's locker. "Here's mine," she said putting in the combination. She opened it seeing a sticky-note on the bottom. Not again. She acted like it wasn't there as she took the books from Jake's hands, placing all of them except the journal in. She kept that one and held it close to her chest. She turned back to Jake. "Thanks again."
Max went to his locker, putting in the combination and seeing a few sticky-notes, he ignored them and put his backpack away and took out the stuff he needed for his first class. He took out the sticky-notes and threw them away after shutting his locker.
“No problem,” Jake said with a nod, “I have to get to my own locker, but I’ll see you in homeroom.” Jake smiled at her before leaving to his own locker to put away his bags and skateboard, which was currently hanging out of Jake’s backpack.
Jess smiled as they left. She closed her locker and left for her first class. She walked into the classroom instantly regretting it. Vanessa sat at the front of the room with her boyfriend, Chad. She avoided their eyes as she took a seat. She couldn't exactly leave without them questioning her. She kept her eyes to the desk, textbook in front of her. Two sets of shoes appeared next to her. "Jessica," Vanessa said, "You seem different today. Did you actually try for your appearance?" She laughed hideously as Jess continued to look at the desk. She knew she could come up with a witty remark, something like "Doesn't seem like you 'actually try' for English" or something. But she just couldn't. Her mouth stayed closed and her eyes down.
Max quietly followed Jessica and sat in the back corner, doodling on his arm. When he saw Vanessa and Chad walking up to Jess, he quickly got up and went over to her desk. "Can't you see that she doesn't want to talk to you?" He asked, a ting of annoyance in his voice.
Jess felt relief rise to her chest as she heard Max's voice. "Whatever," Vanessa said. Jess watched their shoes slip out of the picture. She looked up at Max. "Thanks." She gave him a smile that only lasted for a few seconds. She looked back down at her desk. In the back of her mind, she couldn't help but think that Vanessa was right sometimes. She pushed the thought further back everyday until it had lodged itself in the back of her mind. She brought her notebook closer to her chest.
Jake walked into his homeroom unsuspecting of what just happened. He sat next to Jess and jested, “Hey, miss me?”
"Anytime." Max said, blushing a bit again when Jess smiled at him. He realized that his doodles on his arm were exposed along with the burn scar mark and he quickly rolled down his sleeve while walking back to his desk.
Jess saw the burn mark as Max walked away. I'll ask him later. She turned to Jake and smiled. "Not one bit," she said jokingly. She let out a little laugh.
Max sighed as he sat down at his desk and continued doodling on his arm again, making sure his burn mark wasn't visible.
Jake made mock hurt, “Watch out for those little sharp pieces on the ground, but don’t worry though, it’s just my broken heart!” But then Jake burst with laugher, his eyes alight with joy because he was talking with Jess.
Jess laughed with Jake, glancing back at Max as he seemed to be drawing on his arm. She looked back at Jake, smiling. She placed her journal on the table. "Oh, shoot, I forgot my other textbook. I'll be right back." She stood up and hurried to her locker.
Jake slouched, a small smile still on his face. He glanced at Max, “So how did you two meet?”
Max glanced up and rolled down his sleeve again, "Oh, we were supposed to do a project together and that's how I met her."
“Oh,” Jake said, just to say something. He leaned back. He was good about it talking to Jess today, but he never really knew what to say to most people. He glanced at the door as he waited for her to come back.
Max rolled up his sleeve and continued on his drawing while making sure his burn mark wasn't visible.
(Sorry I'm so late!!!) Jess walked back into the classroom seeing things had been left as they were. She sat down at her desk and then realized something. She took the jacket off her shoulders and handed it back to Jake. "Here's your jacket back."
“Oh, are you sure? If you get cold just tell me and you can have it back,” Jake offered, grabbing his jacket slowly in case she wanted it back.
Jess considered it for a moment. She did get cold easily. "No, it's okay," she decided. "I'll be fine. The only other times I might go outside is after school amd during lunch since I only get there in time for the seats outside. I'll rush today. But honestly, thank you." She smiled.
Jake returned her smile, “Alright, but the offer still stands,” And he shrugged on the jacket. Class was about to start, he noted when he glanced at the clock.
Students shuffled in and behind them came the teacher. "Welcome to class…" He went through the basics and every so often she'd catch a glance of Jake. Soon, it became time to leave for the next class. The bell rang and students walked out with the teacher who had hallway duty. Jess said bye to Jake as he left for his next class. She gathered her stuff went to walk out the door when she saw Chad heading towards Max. Shoot. She may not be able to stand up for herself, but she could for others. For her friends. Right as she turned around Vanessa's foot was there waiting. As she fell, she put her arms out to stop herself, dropping all her books. Her knees hit the floor along with her hands. And her journal. It was wide open. "What's this?" Vanessa said as she picked it up. She read a few lines. Jess was still trying to get up. "Let's go, Chad. I have something better to do." Jess watched their feet leave as she gathered what was left. She stood up with sudden realization. "Wait!" She ran to the hallway in attempt to get it back. This is bad. This is bad. This is bad. She turned around, her chest ached as she tried to think of what to do. I forgot Max! She ran back into the classroom. "Are you okay? What'd he do to you? He didn't hurt you, did he?" She was breathing quickly, unsure if it was from the journal or running.
Max quietly watched every thing and nodded while coughing a bit, "Yep, I-I'm fine." He lied, he didn't want to lie to Jess but he didn't want people worrying about him. He was probably going to have a panic attack or something but he couldn't care less as he ran after Vanessa, "Give me Jessica's Journal, now." He said, his voice filled with pure hatred, which was very unlike him, normally he was the quiet kid in the back of the classroom doing something.
