Sam descended down the marble staircase, tugging at the fancy tuxedo. The sooner they'd pretend to be a normal guy and leave, the better.
Cati was wearing mens clothes and painting the staircase when she saw Sam.
Sam raised an eyebrow. "School vandalism and 'destruction of property'? Nice,"
"what? Oh, painting? I dunno, I like to paint jungle scenes."
(Anyone on?)
(I just got on hold on I'll put something)
Annabel stood at the top of the stairs, looking down at the floor beneath her. Two younger kids were talking to each other, and one was painting the staircase. She was wearing a long dark green dress with sleeves that reached the middle of her palm, black boots, and a scarf that resembled a hijab. She often wore clothing like this so her pigmented skin would go unnoticed.
Cati noticed the girl. "Hello!"
Shoot. Just, don't make eye contact. Annabel pretended to not notice the girl as she decended the staircase, pulling her scarf up so her nose and mouth couldn't be seen.
(question for @Demiphoenix1125 or anyone really: since it's the 'steampunk version of the 1800s, would Annabel also be in trouble for having darker skin?)
"Hey, that's a pretty scarf!" she said, pulling the new girl closer.
Annabel pulled herself away from the girl. "Thank you." She said quietly.
"What's your name?"
She shook her head. "Nothing." Annabel turned to walk away.
"Wait, you have a name!" Cati said, blocking her.
"No I don't." Annabel glared at the girl, her insides twisting with nervousness.
"Well? I'm Cati, tell me who you are!"
Cati tripped on the step, accidentially pulling the girl's headscarf off.
Annabel panicked as her pigmented skin suddenly became visible. She gasped and hurriedly grabbed the scarf from the girl, desperately trying to put it back on.
"Oh, I'm so sorry! I'm such a-" she broke off, seeing the girls face. "Wow, you're so pretty!"
Annabel shook her head, angry tears filling her eyes. "No, I'm not." She put the scarf back over her head, hoping no one else had seen her. "Don't tell anyone."
"Yes you are! You look just like my shaman!"
"Shut. Up." She growled before making her way down the stairs again.
"I'm really sorry! Okay! But I think you're beautiful, especially your pretty eyes."
