A group of college students at a mid-sized liberal arts college find out that one of their members did something…a little illegal. By accident! Of course! But, if you won't help your best friend hide a body, are you even friends?
Basically a way to rewrite Donna Tartt's The Secret History but with likable, realistic, less pretentious characters. My only rules are like, andrew (Our Supreme Lord and Overseer)'s rules + write more than one or two lines + please don't let all the characters be white/skinny/all the same.
I'll post the template if anyone's interested!
(I know absolutely nothing about liberal arts, but could I join?)
(yes of course! also all students can have a different major, a liberal arts college is just smaller + more personalized + provides a well rounded education, kinda like an Honors college but on a bigger scale. do you mind if I ask for a small sample of your writing?)
(I'll go grab one real quick.)

(Hello! I saw dark academia and just had to see what this is. Is cool if I joined?)
(i'd love to join as well! shall i get a bit of my writing?)
(Yes to all three! @darling-velocipede yes please about the writing.)
(I saw/read you and @knightinadream writing samples in the pirate RP, so y'all are gucci)
It all registered in his mind with a slam and he found himself frantically flipping through the glossy pages to find the author's thanks and acknowledgements. And, by some magic of chance and circumstance, there it was– the murdered professor's name. Thanks to my dearest friend, Oliver Capillon, for being invaluable to me in more ways than one. Far more, the book read.
"Holy shit," whispered Zephyr, voice dimmed by disbelief. Herbert B. Ellis still worked at the school. He was nearly 80, but claimed he felt more at home in a place of learning than alone in the surrounding city or the state of his birth.
And it seemed he and the murdered professor may have been more than friends.
(from the other DA roleplay/writing project i've been working on here)
(oh wow that's perfect! ty!)
(nah thank u love!! just quick before i commit, there's not going to be actual the secret history spoilers in here, yeah? just general vibes? as i'm reading it right now)
(yeah, just general vibes! i didn't actually love the book so I definitely won't reference it)
(pff yeah i'm hardly started and they're already coming for psychology so i know i'm not going to care much for these people)
(Thank you so much! I gotta read The Secret History, I keep hearing about it.)
(excited to work with y'all! am i good to start filling out my character?)
(yes, everyone can make their characters! I'm almost done with mine)
Name: Kai "Skip" Landing
Age: 20
Gender: Male
Sexuality: Straight
Major: Double major in International Business and Art
Personality: The boy thinks he's a type 3, but he's a 4w3, ENFP-T. A deeply romantic and sentimental soul with a love for the arts. He can be a guy of few words, but he's clever and enjoys teasing. He's a bit rowdy and is a very sloppy drunk. Has a big heart and is kind of a softy. Rushes into things. Goes through phases of being either completely focused on his studies to being out at 4 am half way across the country the night before an exam. He doesn't have many people he trusts, and even fewer people that he considers close. He's a little classist, believing in the meritocracy, but he's generally well meaning and willing to listen. He's deeply lonely and has trouble being alone with himself, and if he isn't releasing his emotions through art, he's bottling them up. He can be annoying and sometimes believes he's the main character and somehow he's more important than everyone else, and he also has trouble paying attention and remembering things due to his ADHD. Suffers some anxiety, but it's mostly been relieved by being away from his father.
Appearance: Kai is around 5'11 and 160lbs. He has a narrow, thin frame with some muscle tone; he definitely works out, but he still has the lanky build of a teenager not quite grown into his proportions. Shoulders are fairly narrow, but a bit broader than the rest of his body. Seems taller than he is. He's identified by his posture –he stands with a casual slouch normally, but with a proud lift of his head and a certain look in his eye you can tell he comes from wealth. He has moderately pale skin with a light tan and golden yellow undertones. His hair is dusty blonde with the same golden undertones as his skin and 90s cut. Parted in the middle with a few strands in his face, a bit longer than the conventional cut. His eyes are hazel-green with yellow-brown rings around the irises. Wears preppy, academic clothes –high waist pants, flow-y button up tops, and brand new Oxfords. He also wears a gold chain with a pendant around his neck.
Fears: He has a crippling fear of failure and loneliness; he craves human connection but is awful at vulnerability. He thinks he's constantly letting people down, and he's terrified that he'll never become the man his father wants him to be.
Likes: Piano, painting, some singing, old books and indie films, poker with the boys, anything thing that gives him a high or an adrenaline rush (2 am adventures, parties, clubs, you know)
Dislikes: High expectations, business classes, being alone, vulnerability, awkward situations, when people pity him, telling his secrets, his parents, his high school friends.
Backstory: Born into wealth. His father's a CEO with crazy high expectations whose happiness hinges on his children's financial success and intelligence. His mother's a distant, flighty traveler who thinks money and gifts can replace connection. His sister is the only sane one, but she moved once she became financially independent and he's always being compared to her. Because of his upbringing, he never expresses vulnerability or a lot of emotion, so he became a very convenient friend to have –he's popular, but no one really knows him and he never had a "small group" of friends until college. He's slowly learning to open up, thanks to his college friends, which is why he is so loyal to them.
Other: Can speak fluent French and Spanish. Quite wealthy. Doesn't actually want to major in business.
Name: Autumn Hawk
Age (18-22 ish): 18
Gender: Female
Sexuality: Questioning
Major: Double major in Art and Music
Personality: Autumn is quiet and prefers to keep to herself. She has a great memory and hardly ever forgets anything. She's intelligent and flexible, adapting to situations as best she can. She may seem like any other theater nerd, but Autumn Hawk is a force to be reckoned with. If you make her angry, she'll kick you're butt without a second thought.
Appearance: Autumn has long dark red hair fading to burnt orange, and light blue eyes. She has light tan skin with a yellow undertone (https://i.pinimg.com/originals/b6/b9/3e/b6b93ea9bf8ed989891cc32c16783466.jpg), and a spattering of freckles across her nose. Her body is built for speed, but she's pretty strong nonetheless. Autumn is 5'7 in height and has a small scar under her left eye.
Fears: Getting close to people.
Likes: Art, theater/acting, writing, music/singing, adrenaline, martial arts.
Dislikes: Chocolate, being lied to, green beans, cantaloupe.
Backstory: 8 year-old Autumn Hawk lived with her father, mother, 14 year-old brother, and 13 year-old sister until her mother decided she'd had enough of her husband's abusive behavior. She took the children and left in the middle of the night, taking everything they needed. When their mother died, the siblings had to fend for themselves. They eventually got caught by CPS, whom separated them and put them in foster care. Autumn has been moved from foster house to foster house for the past ten years.
Other: Allergic to walnuts.
Name: Flora Gemini Arroyo
Age (18-22 ish): 17 (see backstory)
Gender: Trans woman, she/her
Sexuality: Straight
Major: Forensic Linguistics
Personality: Flora is academic, focused, and calculating. Despite being an heiress, surrounded by luxury and privilege all her life, she wants to take care of herself in the world and prosper financially (though she isn't opposed to taking advantage of her family's generosity while it's available). Though she's reluctant to show it on the surface, any sort of academic failure is devastating for her, and she'll ignore her own comfort to make it up (ex: the time she got a C on an AP computer science test and hardly ate all weekend while she studied to retake). She's not in the least personable and she must respect someone before vaguely considering them a friend. When she likes someone in a more-than-a-friend sort of way, she cuts them off with a precise sort of self-preservationist cruelty.
Appearance: Flora is brunette with terracotta skin and a smattering of little, dark birthmarks across her face. She has almost unnaturally pale green eyes, like crystals, and long eyelashes. She's very dedicated to insuring her face stays clean-shaven, and, as she's been on estrogen for almost three years, passes as a cis woman. She generally wears plain, dark clothes, such as black dress pants and an un-patterned blouse, and never wears heals for practical reasons. She's about 5'4 and curvy. While she can't stand the feeling of most jewelry, she does wear the silver necklace with a dime-sized cross at the end her mother gave her on a daily basis, not because she's religious but because she appreciates the reminder of her family and home country. (also, i may have made a picrew of her because i have no restraint :])
Fears: Not succeeding in life, disappointing her mother
Likes: Spain (her home country), plants, instrumental music
Dislikes: Children, most birds, musicals, white chocolate
Backstory: Native to Spain, Flora is only living in the US temporarily to attend collage, as the school here (i think we need a name for it y'all) has the best forensic linguistics program in the country. She's an only child and the sole heiress to a considerable amount of money her mother made running the textile business her grandfather started. While her father is more whimsical, and not particularly dependable, her mother has been Flora's role model all her life– successful and decisive. Flora has a twin brother named Quinn who is still living in Spain and studying art. Their interest in plants is one of the few things they share.
Other: Spanish is her first language, but she speaks fluent English as well. Her whole family was chill when she came out, excluding one bitter uncle who the family avoids anyway.
