He learned not to care about what people thought of him. The wings on his back symbolize his freedom. He's willing to die for the people he loves and doesn't care if people harass him for his gift.

His dad was doing business with shady people so he could earn a living to support his family, but the dark business caught up with him and he found out he was being used, but he was put in jail for life, leaving Balora and 7 year old Kameo alone without any money. Kam lived on the streets with his mother, trying to take care of her because she was sick until he signed up for the Navy and got a love of sailing, while sending money back home. His mother was also the one who taught him how to dance. He purchased a houseboat after getting discharged and he and his mother currently live there, happy and visiting Rami (his dad) every week in jail.
