Backstory:
Nobody really knows what caused society's collapse, though many people believe that a variety of factors were to blame. It was so long ago that much of the information about what life was like before the collapse is largely a mystery; the times were filled with such turmoil that keeping accurate historical records was no where nearly as important as trying to stay alive, and most of what we know about what happened is based solely off of what our parents have told us (and what our grandparents told them). At the end of the day, all we know about times past is what we've heard.
According to the stories, the Age of Chaos— the awful period following the Collapse— was one of terrible war, turmoil, and anarchy. Society completely crumbled, which meant every man for himself— and in a world where 70% of the population possess superhuman abilities, the stakes were even higher and more complicated. Many individuals who possessed powerful abilities used their powers for their own gain, forming their own mini-governments and persecuting those who were weaker than them. Some people tried to ban together, but it seemed that all of these separate groups were constantly warring against one another, devouring and destroying one another. Cities were destroyed; families were demolished. Orphaned children hid in abandoned sewers and subway systems, scurrying like rats. Lawlessness abounded. The people were too divided, too terrified, or too selfish to even begin to think about a way to form a new, stable society. Besides, most of them were too budy trying not to starve rather than worrying about a future government.
Until a group of super-powered individuals decided that they were done with it. Inspired by stories of old, of "superheroes" who fought against criminals for the greater good of the world, these people took it upon themselves to fight for a way to rebuild society— new and strong, a place where people could feel safe again. It didn't happen overnight; it took years. But over time, as these new heroes began to fight against those who would oppress others, dismantle groups of violent and evil men, and seek out ways to establish structure and build a new, ideal society, the world began to shift. Hope— something that had long been dead— finally began to blossom again. People were inspired, and eventually, eventually, a new world began to rise from the ashes of anarchy.
That was almost forty years ago.
Society is still plagued by the past; though technology is advancing rapidly again and we finally have a (somewhat) stable government, crime and chaos still abound. Superheroes are the glue of society, the only good force working to combat the evil lurking in the shadows. They do what they can to fight off villains, especially those that threaten our unstable sense of structure and security— but their hands are full, and oftentimes, criminals are overlooked and running rampant. Good is trying to prevail, but the evil is still so powerful. It's a terrible balance, a tightrope, a scale that could be tipped one way or the other.
Themes: Post-apocalyptic, dystopian, dark superhero fantasy, criminal gangs, etc.
Setting: Our characters are in the city of New Haven; it's the capitol of the new society, a megacity whose center is one of the more recovered and advanced places in the nation. Despite the fact that this city is the hub for quite a handful of superheroes, it is also one of the most crime-ridden cities in the country, home to a great number of criminal gangs who rival each other and partake in a wide variety of illicit activities. The superheroes have their hands full, to say the least. The center of the city is highly advanced, while the edges of the city begin to look more abandoned and dilapidated; crime is scattered throughout but especially concentrated on the forgotten backstreets. Technology is highly advanced, but most dangerous technologies are illegal in what is said to be an attempt to protect people from being harmed by it. Ironically, it seems that criminals don't care about this and sell tech on the black market all day long anyway. It is also illegal to use superpowers in public unless you are working for a government-sanctioned superhero organization. Criminals obviously don't care about this rule either.
Plot?
Essentially, what I'm going for with this RP is a mesh of heroes/villains/superpowers + crime gang dynamics + post-apocalyptic elements. I have so many ideas for plots that it isn't even funny, so I probably won't pick a single one and we will likely do multiple throughout; I will play multiple characters throughout this RP (but don't worry; I don't go overboard. I'm not one of those people.) You can play as many characters as you like, so long as you don't overwhelm yourself or others. Make sure, though, that you read everything. I didn't stay up until after 2 in the morning typing all of this out for nothing.
Once people begin to show interest, we can discuss how we want to go about this. Maybe to start with, the heroes and the rogues are at odds, and on the other side, the villain and his criminal gang bicker with some of the more freelance mercenaries— but as the RP continues, the heroes and rogues team up to fight the villain, whilst the villain teams up with some of the freelance mercenaries. I want this to be a complex, dynamic roleplay; I want the characters to have arcs (whether those be negative or positive, we shall see). Maybe bad guys go good, good guys go bad— idk. We'll cross those bridges when we get there. Just be willing to be dynamic and have fun with it!
ROLES
Important note: I know I have limited roles available right now, but I only did this because I wanted to make sure that, if multiple people do decide to join, we don't have all characters of a single role. However, as the RP continues, you will be allowed to add new characters in and will get a chance to have a character of any role you desire. Just be patient.
Hero.
Heroes are the glue holding society together. They are a bit rougher than your traditional hero, a bit less shiny and glamorous given the fact that they live in a world that is not so shiny and glamorous— but they are tasked with a heavy responsibility of protecting the city from villains. Heroes face a lot of temptations, which gives you room to give your characters interesting arcs. How does your hero stand firm in the face of this complex and still-corrupted society? How do they handle the responsibility, the burden of being one of those fighting to save this hopeless world? How do they resist the temptations for power, for their own happiness, or even their own safety? Do they resist? Do they struggle? There are a lot of interesting ways this can go.
- Heroes work for government-sanctioned organizations. There are rules they have to follow, but they have the power to arrest people and are essentially their own sort of "police-force."
- There are a lot of good heroes, sincere and hard working— but some… some are corrupt.
- Heroes are allowed to use their powers in public because they work for a government organization.
- Heroes are trained for years to use their powers to the best of their ability and taught the moral and ethical codes of how to help make the world better.
- It takes a lot of work and sacrifice to become a hero, but anyone can do it with enough hard work. However, it's not glamorous. People respect and idolize you, but it's a hard job and the more good you want to do, the more you're going to have to endanger your life. Heroes die often.
- Heroes that break the laws and rules that are set for them are called "rogues" and are considered criminals who are to be arrested.

Rogues.
Rogues are ex-heroes who have deviated from the laws and rules of hero society, or people who call themselves "heroes" but work freelance, without working for a government organization. What they do is technically illegal, and they are considered "criminals" by heroes and by some of society. Some people still like them anyway, though; it varies. Just like the heroes, there's a lot of room for similar arcs…
- Rogues have no allegiance to an organization, so their moral codes vary according to the individual.
- Level of training also varies; if they're an ex-hero, they would've been trained like other heroes, but if they have always been a rogue, then training varies.
- Being a rogue is often harder than being a hero because heroes sometimes work in teams; rogues team up occasionally, but most of them seem to be a little less cooperative than heroes.
- Rogues have less resources than heroes; heroes have organizations that will help provide funds for equipment, medical aid, technology, and anything else they need. Rogues don't.
- Rogues sometimes rely on more questionable ways of operating, sometimes even working with criminals to help take down other criminals (kind of depends on the individual's moral code).
- It's illegal to use their powers in public because they don't work for the government.
- Rogues fight for what they believe to be right and want to fix society for the better.

Criminals.
A criminal is a criminal. Some criminals may work alone; some may work for a gang, for organized crime. It's pretty straight forward, but there are a lot of variations for criminals, so here are a few various roles below (if you have any other roles you would like to use, or none of these particular roles, let me know).
- Criminals can be mercenaries or work for the villain listed below this. For the purpose of this roleplay, any criminal will probably end up working with the villain in order to tie this RP in together. If your criminal is freelance and has a reputation for being good at what they do, my villain will come to hire them. :)

Villain/Gang-leader.
More slots will be available for this later, but because we don't want to start the RP with too many separate antagonistic forces, I am going to start with the first villain.
Important note: Criminals are still villains and can still have powers. This role particularly is just a leader-type villain who runs the gang. This does not take away from the importance of your criminal characters.

I apologize for how awfully messy all of this is. It's 2:40 in the morning and I have been up since 6:30; I am getting up at 6:30 again. Yes, I am sleep deprived, so my brain is not cooperating. I'm not usually this scattered; I just wanted to get this up tonight. If you are interested in joining, please provide a short writing sample (unless I have RPed with you before). Thank you so much for your interest; I'll post templates once people show interest.
