Alright lemme try and make a clear idea out of it XP
These kids collect objects off of the street. One day they get a particularly good haul. As they're walking home, one of them is playing with this rubber ball when he disappears. Just disappears.
The idea is that the rubber ball was a portal/portkey/whatever-you-want-to-call-it and one of them has been teleported. Which leads to them trying to find each other again.

I'd originally thought quite young, around 15, but it doesn't really matter. It could also be interesting to use older characters
