Mike stared at the thin pink clouds for a while, his brow creased slightly. "If he's a human with magic, there could be others. How did you find out with him?"
Mike stared at the thin pink clouds for a while, his brow creased slightly. "If he's a human with magic, there could be others. How did you find out with him?"
“Well, many humans have magic nowadays all you have to do is find the right person to discover it. There’s this woman, The Mother as I and others call her, and she discovered his magic.”
Mike thought about that. "I wonder if I have magic." Then he snorted drily. "I sure hope not."
“What do you have against magic?” Tanrial asked, leaning forward a little.
"I just can't stand it. It's like…." He shrugged with some feeling. "I mean, maybe it's some kind of evolutionary advantage. Maybe it's a blessing from a "god" or something, and we should be grateful. But to me, it just feels like cheating. Like when athletes used to take drugs so they'd win more often." He sighed. "My grandad felt the same way. He taught me to be proud of what I was, and said that humans were actually special because we'd managed to survive for so long, in any environment, no matter what happened, even without the help of magic. We're strong, smart, adaptable, and all by ourselves we've taken over the world. Maybe that's not a good thing, but it still does make me proud." Mike broke off and turned the spit slowly. "Magic took away everything my family had, and then it took away my family. Nothing against you or Bernon….you're clearly good people. But the only thing I want to know about magic is how to fight against it."
Tanrial watched as he turned the spit, “If it took everything from you I understand why you want to fight it. I’m not going to try to change your judgement, that’s your choice whether you like it or not…there are ways to… fight it, none I can teach you, otherwise I would.”
Mike inclined his head in thanks. "I've learned a few tricks. Some chemicals counteract magic, and some minerals too, apparently. That blood sample I took from Bernon? I plan to have it analyzed by Ryker's scientists so I can find out what that poison was made of and make more for myself. It's always good to have options."
(Welp, I gotta go to bed now, see you later!)
“I guess so. Some users have become immune to potions though, so just look out for them.
(Seeya!)
"An immunity, eh? Makes sense. I'll keep that in mind."
Just then Bernon sat up with a yawn and a stretch. "Hey," he said with sleepy indignation. "Were you guys gonna let me sleep all day? I'm not a little kid, I can function without eight hours of rest." He sat up further and his annoyance was forgotten. "Ooh, that smells good. Is breakfast ready?"
“Yeah, I’m not the hungry so you can share it out between yourselves…” She said with a shrug.
Bernon pulled on his boots and joined them at the fire. "Aw, there's plenty for everyone! You should at least have a little Tanrial, it's gonna be another long day out there." He took the spit off the fire and looked in confusion at the nicely roasted bird carcass on its end. "What do you say? Have a….bird thing?"
“I’m honestly not hungry, really.” She said, fiddling with the dagger.
"Okay, if you're sure."
Mike stood up. "I'm off to check my snares. When I get back we should pack up and start moving. Bernon's right, we've got a lot more traveling to do."
“Got it, I’m basically ready to go anyway so whenever you guys are ready.” She said, rolling up her bed roll.
Bernon watched Mike leave, absently eating some fresh deer bacon. "I heard you guys talking when I woke up. Have a good convo?"
“Moderate, as is every conversation with Mike,” She said with a shrug, and a slight smile.
(Sorry, gotta go, seeya later)
(Okay ^^)
Bernon chuckled. "He's a very odd, mysterious person to me, I'll say that." Finishing his food, he started to put all the meat in tightly wrapped cloth packages to keep them fresh. "How are you doing? Feeling homesick at all? I know I would."
(I don't think I'll have time to be on tonight, sorry :( Seeya tomorrow)
“No, not really.” She said with a shrug, “I don’t think I’ll ever miss it.”
(Aww, okay, seeya tomorrow)
"Oh yeah. I forgot you weren't fond of your folks." Bernon packed up his blanket and cooking gear. "Well, maybe after this is over you'll find a place to call home that has people you like in it. Or I guess you could become a wanderer, like me. It's a bit lonely sometimes, but the people and places you see–it's amazing."
She smiled a little, “Prossibly, I’ve never really thought about it so I don’t know. I’d like to see the world but…” She shrugged, “I don’t know.”
He nodded. "Yeah, and I'm not saying you need to decide right away. For now let's just focus on making it through this road trip alive."
Mike reappeared, his snares already packed away and a small quail tied to his belt. "Are we ready? I found a path that crosses the road. We can hopefully follow it to some fresh water and restock our supply pretty soon."
“I’m ready.” She stood and made sure all her things were packed away and her weapons were safely fastened to he body or stowed away, “Shall we?”
The other two nodded. "Yup, let's go."
Mike led them to the path and they set off, following their shadows across the giant roads and into the low hills on the other side. There were many small trails in this area, originally made by something with large cloven hooves (cattle, perhaps?) and then worn even deeper by deer. At times the trail was so deep and narrow that they had to walk beside it to avoid twisting their ankles. After about an hour they found another small creek in the low ground, surrounded by vividly green grass and long dead apple trees. A few animal skulls lay half-buried in the dirt, and only a songbird broke the still silence of the little dell as the group knelt to refill their water canteens.
Tanrial filled her canteen and took a swing before screwing the kid back on. As she was placing it back in her bag, she spotted a white elk emerging from the forest over the field. It’s antlers massive and from where she was crouched, it loooked like it was glowing in the shadiness of the forest. She couldn’t see any others like him, only a few brown standing a few feet away from the white.
“Look…” She said pointing to where it stood. Even though she couldn’t see where it was looking, it felt like it wasn’t looking straight at them.
