(The Earth has become a non-suitable planet; so instead of leaving and searching for another, the government issued an order for every single person to join in on a new project.
It's called 'Connection.' Human bodies are put into a living pod where they're brains are connected to an alternate reality where everything is an exact replica of Earth.
Only safer, cleaner, happier, and better.
It has been 50 years, and there is a malfunction. A group of people wake up disconnected, torn away from their utopia. They escape the safehouse and realize that Earth is no longer the same)
