My favorite version, for a polytheistic society, is that the god/goddess of death sits at the intersection between all the various afterlifes (heaven, hell, nirvana, etc.) and judges where souls go. There's a massive queue before you reach her throne, but if you don't deserve Heaven or Hell, they keep you as an advisor in their judgements.
