"Well..finished high school, graduated. Uh..you probably heard but my brother, Caden, died bout a year and a half ago. Not much else happened I guess.." He didn't look at her.
Abi was suspicious. She knew what Blake was like and if he had avoided her gaze, he wasn't telling her something.
"So your family. What's up?" He asked quietly, a little sad from having to mention his brother.
"Well, you already know about their disappearances," Abi started. "Well, yesterday I found something. It could be a clue to their disappearances."
"Well what is it?" He asked, hopeful for her.
Abi was about to say then stopped. "I dont know if I can trust you anymore."
"You what? Why wouldn't trust me?" He got a little offended as she said this.
"It's been four years, Blake. We left on an argument because you didn't want to keep searching for my parents."
"Yeah because your grades were dropping Abi. You almost never showed up to school. You almost failed high school. I think that's a good enough reason to stop looking for them, don't you?"
"No, I-" Abi stopped short, knowing that a fight had ended them the first time. She didn't want to lose her temper again.
“That doesn’t mean you can’t trust me.” He said more gently.
Abi looked into Blake's light brown eyes, remembering how she had fallen in love with him 7 years ago. "I'm sorry, I just overreacted."
“No problem. So what is it about your family then?”
Abi smiled at how quickly Blake was able to forgive, but still wasn't ready to tell him. Her eyes flicked to the piano in the corner. "You still have it?"
“Course I do. I never play it though..” He looked over at it, remembering Abi sitting there.
"How's Adelia? Still going strong? I loved playing for her," Abi said as she walked over to the piano.
“You didn’t hear..She had a stroke a couple months ago. She’s in the hospital but they don’t think she’ll get any better..” He trailed off, not looking at Abi.
"Oh," Abi replied, trying to mask the sadness in her voice. Adelia had been like a grandmother to her, and she had been more reluctant to leave her than Blake four years ago.
“Yeah..” He looked down, trying to had his sadness as well.
Abi played a few notes on the piano.
Blake watched her, remembering how pretty she looked while she played, so focused.
"When I'm down and feeling scared, I know I should take a chance. The world is sitting right here, in the palm of my hands," Abi sang softly, remembering the song that Katelyn used to sing to her when there was no one around.
Blake smiled a little and gazed at her affectionately. I wish we would’ve stayed together..
Tears rolled down Abi's cheeks as she stopped playing. Instead of wiping them away, she clutched the fox pendant that used to belong to Katelyn. "I miss them so much," She whispered.
Blake stood up and walked over to her. “It’s okay, it’s going to be okay.” He said, hugging her.
