It took several more minutes, but finally, Lucas seemed to be more present and was calmer. He was now completely silent and had not yet attempted to make eye contact with Eugene.
Eugene noticed the evident calmness of the other, he debated for a second in his head about what exactly to do."Hey… is everything okay now? Or do you need some more time?" He asked softly.
"I-I… uh… I think I'm okay… s-sorry…" Lucas said quietly, fidgeting anxiously as he continued staring at the ground. "I'm… kind of a mess…" He laughed humorlessly.
"No need to apologize, it's okay. I get it." Eugene continued softly, offering a smile. He continued rubbing the other's shoulder. "Ah, you're not a mess…" He whispered.
"I'm definitely a mess… I can't even be alone for a few minutes at a party without freaking out…" Lucas sighed and buried his face in his arms again.
"It's okay though. It is really chaotic out there and there's a lot of people. I just sat in the corner, observing it all. I don't blame you for hiding here actually, it's nice." Eugene's smile dropped to a more neutral expression.
"I guess so, yeah…" Lucas sighed again and glanced up at Eugene. "Why did you bother helping me?" He asked softly. "Why do you care?"
"Well, I saw someone go into the bathroom, which was you of course. Then you hadn't come out for quite a while so I wanted to make sure everything was okay and you weren't dying or something like that." Eugene explained, his lips returning to a small smile.
"Ah… but again, why did you care? Why do you care?" He asked. "I'm not important. I'm just some random guy crying in the bathroom. I'm nothing to you. I'm nothing to anyone."
"Ah… well I guess one, I had nothing to do… maybe… that's not really a reason," Eugene mumbled, trying to figure out exactly why he had cared. "Well, I'm not really sure, to be honest. Does having a big heart count?" He asked with a small chuckle.
Lucas shrugged. "I'm… not used to people caring about me…" He sighed softly. "It's been years…"
Eugene's facial features softened. He instantly felt even worse for this guy and he also was very happy at himself for caring. "Well, today's your lucky day, I care about you now."
Lucas looked up at Eugene, confused. "W-What? Why? I haven't done anything to deserve that. Hell, we don't even know each other's names."
"In that case, My name is Eugene. And your's?" Gene smiled back at the other. "I don't need a reason to be someone's friend, I just want to, I guess."
"Um… m-my name's Lucas… Lucas Mulbright." Lucas still seemed quite nervous and confused. He didn't have many friends, or anyone who was particularly interested in being his friend.
"Oh yeah, Pierce is my last name if you care. But it's great to meet you." Eugene was excited. He wasn't much of one to openly seek friends, usually pretty content with the ones he had, but in this case, he made it his goal to be good friends, at least, with Lucas,
Lucas nodded, fidgeting nervously. "Um… s-sorry, I'm… not super familiar with friendship, to be honest… is there something I should do?"
"Just be yourself I guess. I've already seen you at, I'm assuming, one of your worst. So no need to hide anything because I'm happy to help and be there for anything." Eugene squeezed Lucas' shoulder a little tighter, a smile on his lips.
Lucas flushed a bit and nodded again. You're lucky you didn't see me at any worse than that… it gets so much worse… "Do you… um… have any other friends??" He asked awkwardly.
Eugene nodded a little before answering. "Yeah, I have a few others, not a lot though. I'd rather have quality rather quantity. One of them is the host of this so-called party actually. He does go a little overboard with lots of things, this is no exception. Do you have any others? I know you said you're new to friendship, but I'm going to ask anyway."
"Um… I came here with my friend Caleb. He kinda ditched me, though, which is sort of what set me off, I think… he's been kind of a dick recently anyways. He's gotten some other friends and her ignores me a lot."
"Ohh, that's a shit move right there. You should ignore him back. If he's ditching and ignoring you then he's not the right friend. I've been in that situation… way too many times, and the best thing to do is ignore them back, no matter how bad it may feel to do so." Eugene explained, a small frown on his face, recalling a few of the times his friends had ignored or ditched him.
"I've tried, I just… I know you just said to do it no matter how bad it feels, but I just feel horrible… like, I haven't got anyone else, I can't just push away the only person I've got left. Even if he's kind of a dick sometimes."
"Well, now you got me. I know it's a little pre-mature in our friendship to be saying that, but I do mean it, okay?" Eugene started lightly rubbing Lucas' shoulder again.
Lucas nodded. "It's just… It's kinda hard since we see each other almost every day, you know? I'd love to have a break from him, but I really don't have much choice."
"Yeah, I get that. It takes time to cut toxic people out of your life sometimes." Hummed Eugene. He didn't really know what else to do or say, so he went silent.
"I guess so…" Lucas sighed, silent for several seconds as well. "Got any family?" He asked quietly. Small talk clearly wasn't his strong suit.
"Oh yeah, I do. I have a sister and my parents. My sister's in middle school. My mom works at one of the hospitals and my dad works from home. What about you?" Eugene asked.
Lucas shrugged. "Meh… barely. Just got my dad at this point, as far as I know. I've never met my extended family. Well, I did a long time ago, but they're dead now…"
(So I won't be active for the next week or two. I just need a small break. Sorry about that)
