Margot walked into the room, still smiling. But the moment she saw what lay in front of her, her smile disintegrated. A terrified scream escaped her lips and she took a step back.
Her footstep splattered the blood beneath her boot. The mess of blood, fabric and water coalesced into a revolting puddle that stained the polished marble flooring.
It's so good to see more people take a crack at this prompt. Good job everyone ⭐️
Today's word of the day is: ignoble
Ignoble, which is an adjective, is defined as "not honorable in character or purpose" or "of humble origin or social status".
Aldin could not understand for the life of him why he was chosen to become the next Royal Knight. It was true that he saved the princess' life from an untimely demise at the business end of an arrow, but that did not take much skill. All he did was jump in the way and get shot through the shoulder blade; something that he sorely regretted the moment it happened. He was of ignoble birth: his mother came from a fishing family, and his father was a humble blacksmith.
Least qualifying of all, Erin Aldin was an illegal, female soldier.
Alexander Hamilton wrote the Constitution and the Jay Treaty. He was the founder of USA's financial system and the New York Post. He was George Washington's Treasury Secretary, fought in the American Revolution, participated in the establishment of U.S Mint. He was born out of wedlock, and orphaned as a child.
Now look me in the eye and tell me that a person of ignoble beginnings cannot rise up.
Naomi was of an ignoble caste. Aaron knew it. And yet he loved her, despite his father's whippings and his mother's shouts and his adviser's scolding. He loved her. And he wanted it to be her who stayed with him through this, whatever the cost.
And so he took a deep breath and rounded the corner. His footsteps echoed loudly against the stone floor. As he approached her room, he heard voices.
"-choosing this! What about Astra?"
Then came Naomi's voice. "I know, Charles, I know, but I love him. Astra will understand."
He heard a sharp intake of breath. "And you don't love me?"
At that, Aaron felt a sharp pain in his heart. He peeked into the room. Naomi stood pressed against another man. Charles. It took a moment to register– this was unknown, this pain. He had never loved, and so had never felt heartbreak. He stumbled back, and Naomi heard him. She whipped around, eyes wide with terror. "Aaron, wait."
But he shook his head. "No. I'm not waiting any longer." And with his, he took off down the corridor at full speed, tears streaming down his stricken face.

@Mila I see what you tried to do, but you used the word in the wrong form. The way you used the word, you turned it into a noun, and the noun form of ignoble is ignobility, so your sentence should have been: "Now look me in the eye and tell me that a person of ignobility cannot rise up."
Or, you could have said: "Now look me in the eye and tell me that a person of ignoble birth/standing/beginnings/etc. cannot rise up."
Or even: "Now look me in the eye and tell me that an ignoble person cannot rise up."
I hope this helps you moving forward!
Ah! I understand now. And I saw that I forgot to delete a word in my own vignette. That's why proofreading saves lives lol
How do you make a word bold?
Two asterisks (**) on each side of the word/phrase/sentence

Also, i just discovered how to make a bullet point! One asterisk (*) and a space
Huh, there so many cool tricks
Today's word of the day is: extrapolate
Extrapolate, which is a verb, is defined as "to infer (an unknown) from something that is known; conjecture".
Zela poured through her notes late one evening. She was so close to a breakthrough; she could feel it! She was sure that she was on the right path, but something was missing. From her research notes, Zela was able to extrapolate that the artifact that she was looking must be somewhere in the desert.
But where? That was the question of the hour. Maybe she just had to pick a spot and dig?
"No, that would be a waste of time, effort, and money," she mused to herself. "There's got to be an easier way."
After picking through page after page of her notes for hours on end, Zela's eyes began to wander. She settled on a book that was on her desk, one of Varian's older novels. It was one her favorites, the one where Lord Covendash explored some underground ruins in search of a famous jewel. Zela smiled fondly; she had always liked that story.
Suddenly, it all clicked.
"That's it!" the historian exclaimed excitedly before rushing off to the library.
Theo scowled at Adele as she lectured him on the rules of the exercise. All he wanted was a minute of calm, a minute to go check on Sienna. All he wanted was for her to shut up.
"So, Miss Dukes, what's the deal with Zoe? Is she like an ex or something?" Theo extrapolated. "Cause that level of tension doesn't come because you stole someone's lollipop."
Adele froze. "If you would be so very kind as to focus on the exercise at hand, Theo, it would be greatly appreciated," Adele she coldly.
Good, but part of the point is to come up with your own content. Of course, I'm happy that you grasped how to properly use the word, but the man point of this exercise is to help you incoporate better vocabulary into your stories. Just something to keep in mind for next time.
Today's word of the day is: pervade
Pervade, which is a verb, is defined as "to become spread throughout all parts of (something)".
Sunshine began to visibly salivate as the smell of fresh fuit pervaded the morning desert air. The creature flopped around and barked excitedly.
"It's breakfast time, Sunshine!" said Paprika with almost as much excitement. "But I guess you already knew that, huh?" She tossed some fruit to her seal, who was all too happy to gobble it up in nearly a single bite. "You want some, too, Forehead?"
The other seal in the pen, Forehead, lumbered over to Paprika, who brought down the basket of fuits to the creature's level. Forehead cautiously sniffed the contents before barking in agreement.
"Sheesh, Seras, your partner is just as picky as you," Paprika teased as she gave the woman beside her a slight nudge.
Seras neglected to respond to her sister's comments.
(I changed the extrapolate prompt)
Tomas edged closer to the pool. Lina was distracted, tending to the little pink flowers lining the path to the back garden. He picked up a bucket, scooped up some water and approached Lina from behind.
"Hey, Tom, do you think-" she started, but before she could finish Tomas lunged and poured the contents of the bucket over her head. Lina stood, scared, gasping, as the cool water pervaded her clothes.
"Why you little…" she said breathlessly. Tomas giggled and started walking away backwards. She went to run after him, and he turned and sprinted.
She returned home like a soldier returned home from battle. She had victory on her lips and grief in her eyes. She lifted her sword, coated with blood, and said, "A dragon is dead." But Tasper could hear the inaudible, "and so is my best friend." She smiled for Evera, for Enzo, for everyone who hinged so much on her victory, and then she left. Dragon smoke and bitterness pervaded around her, drenching her in a tangle of emotions. Tasper was almost afraid of her.
I can't believe we're hitting two consecutive weeks of this; what a milestone!
At any rate…
Today's word of the day is: surreptitious
Surreptitious, which is an adjective, is defined as "obtained, done, made, etc., by stealth; secret or unauthorized; acting in a stealthy way".
Princess Elleen knew that she only had one shot. If her mother was not going to give her the answers that she desired, then the princess had no choice but to obtain them surreptitiously. Her mother did not often leave her study unlocked and unattended, but thanks to some clever planning on Elleen's part, and some help from her clumsy knight, her mother had to hastily run off to deal with a problem.
It did not take long for Elleen to sneak into her mother's study; the guards that watched over the area had a steady and predictable routine. Once inside, the princess made a beeline for the object that she went through all this trouble for.
"Here it is," she whispered solemnly, "Mother's journal from over a century ago."
Shout out to @Amber who's stuck with this for so long. I hope your dad's impressed with all the new words you've learned! You've more than earned this gold star ⭐️
Also, shout out to all those who've joined in and either learned some new words, or brushed up on old knowledge. Gold star for all of youse, too ⭐️
Awww thanks! My dad is happy with is. He'd actually given Baudolino to read and write down the words I didn't know.
Leila gaze shot up when her door open. Her brother sauntered in, and she surreptitiously sat on the book, scooting around to hide it.
He looked at her. "Dinner's ready." He walked out.
She sighed in relief and put the book in her lap again.
Andromeda surreptitiously crept into the hallway, holding her robe tightly around her. She padded towards the end room, nervously checking for guards around her. She got to the door and silently pushed it open; she gasped. It had the same effect on her as the first time.
She walked forward, craning her neck to look at the tops of the shelves lost in darkness. She went up to a shelf, stroking its content. She found one of interest and pulled it out.
She went to a chair and flipped the book open, inhaling the wonderful smell.
Today's word of the day is: restitution
Restitution, which is a noun, is defined as

Bokoba ignored her mother's griping about the weather as she dragged her towards the castle. Today was finally the day that her mother and the queen would finally make up and put their years-long grudge behind them.
Conarith was being difficult about it, as usual. Bokoba understood where her mother was coming from; after all the hurt and betrayal that the queen had put her and the rest of the family through, Conarith had a true reason to be slow to forgive. The queen owed them all restitution for her deception and crimes against them.
However, Bokoba also understood that the friendship between the two deceptively older women would never mend if it were left to the two them to do so. Bokoba had had enough, and she knew that they had had enough, and so did their families and friends.
Conarith and the queen's toxic feud would end today; Bokoba swore it.
"I demand restitution!" Gerard cried. Anna was trembling with rage behind him. "Your men destroyed our crops, sire. We demand restitution.
The king yawned. "Mr. Gasder, you must understand, my soldiers were merely doing their duty and chasing down the thief.
"They trampled our fields," Gerard growled.
Happy belated Friday the 13th, y'all! What's a better way to celebrate than a word about luck?
Today's word of the day is: serendipity
Serendipity, which is a noun, is defined as
- "an aptitude for making desirable discoveries by accident"
- "good fortune; luck"
Conarith clapped her hands with excitement; today was shaping up to be quite the day! Not only was her latest trial run a complete success, but through pure serendipity, she had also managed to discover the perfect insulator for her previously failed electrical experiments. Who would have thought that using jute was the key all along?
Reese waltzed through the streets, a foolish grin on her face. She was known to be a lucky person, serendipity always on her side, and today was yet another proof of that.
Walking along the boulevard, she had bumped into Helena Bonham Carter. Helena Bonham Carter! It was a miracle.
Today's word of the day is: erroneous
Erroneous, which is an adjective, is defined as:
- "containing error; mistaken; incorrect; wrong"
- "straying from what is moral, decent, proper, etc"
Lyra looked sheepishly at the man that she erroneously accused of the crime. This was the second time in a week that she made a false arrest; the prince would surely have her hide for this.
"I guess you're free to go," she mumbled. "No hard feelings, right?"
The man angrily wrenched his arm out of Lyra's grasp, and, after some choice words, made his leave.
Sir Nicholas gasped at his daughter's snort. "Elizabeth, that is not the way a lady behaves!" He slapped her hand and pushed the teacup her way. "I will not let you continue this erroneous behaviour."
He frowned and looked ahead at their guest. "My apologies for interrupting you, Duchess. You were saying?"
The Duchess gave Eli a small smile before turning back to her father. "The terrible political situation."
