Hi, everyone! I'm L.C and I need your help…
So basically. I'm trying to come up with a coherent plot for my story. I've kind of been all over the place with my ideas, and now I've decided it's probably for the best if I ask for them.
So the basic premise of my story is as follows: Alongside the world we know, there is a similar/alternate one known as Iuthea (It's a urban fantasy, so it's a modern alternate world. ^^)
A boy who's grown up in earth crosses over into Iuthea, discovering somewhere along the way that he's the illegitimate child of a large country's monarch.
Now, I can most definitely hear you now,
"That's it?? L.C, there's got to be more to it than that!"
And you're right! Sort of. Mostly.
I don't know what the main plot would be, but a couple subplots I have in mind is the importance of found family, diving head first into the world's numerous social issues. (Most notably, racism, oppression and bigotry.)
But…. What else? I don't feel like it's enough yet!
So basically, here are the main things I need help with coming up with:
- A main plot.
- Any ways to make this idea stronger and more…. Writeable? I guess?
- Any flaws you notice with what I've said thus far.
- Anything that you think would work well with this idea, or anything you would like to see in this project!
I'm happy to provide more details if needed. I don't have much in terms of character profiles (Not on this website, anyways.) but what I do have I'll happily explain.
Thank you so so so much for any help/input you all can give! Everyone here is so imaginative and so good at thinking outside the box, it's absolutely incredible.
Hi L. C! It's nice to meet you! I really like the ideas you have so far, and sure, maybe they're not very detailed yet, but then again, that's the beauty of it. And what is more, you already know what direction you want to go with this story, which really just means everything else will fall into place. I like the fact that you want to focus on deep themes like found family and prejudices etc.
A random plot i could imagine happening is your mc finding out about his heritage and struggling to come to terms with it, like the power he could have had or if it would even be right to take that power etc… Then he gets thrown into luthea, a world full of issues and problems, and probably builds a family of a band of misfits (…?) which makes him even more angry at how luthea works because now his new friends/family are the targets. What i could imagine happening is him wanting to change all that, and then, to try to do that, try to take over ruling luthea. That would make his struggle with his own heritage and how power is used come to a breaking point, as he suddenly has the power to make decisions and has the responsibility to own up to them as well. I think it would be cool for him to end up realizing he can't force change from the top but needs to change peoples mind from the bottom (like his found family changed his mind on family for example) so he decides to stop ruling and tries to reach society there by other means.
Of course thats a very rough plot idea, and who knows, maybe it messes up all the subplots so i guess just take what you want from the idea and leave all the rest? Also i am aware it focuses a lot on his heritage as a monarchs son, I'm not sure if you were even planning on making that such a big part of the story, so yeah. But, as i said, i really like where you're going with this idea and this is just my take on how I'd write a plot with the elements you mentioned.
And a question of interest: whats your favorite subplot you've been working on so far and why?
It's a pleasure to meet you as well, @cue-nervous-humming!
Thanks for the feedback, I'm glad you like the idea! It's one that I'm rather fond of, perhaps more than I'd care to admit…
I really love your idea for a main plot, it's perfect on its own, yet has lots of room to expand! I will definitely use it, so thank you very much for it!! <3
As for subplots, I think my favorite is the aspect of found family. I guess for more personal reasons than anything. I really do believe that relationships that you choose to form with others are much stronger than familial bonds. (although family is still very important!)
Thank you so much for your input, it really means a lot to me!

I'm glad you liked the idea!! I hope you have tons of fun writing.
Yeah found family is really really valuable. Because the free decision to unconditionally love someone is incredibly hard to make and all the more amazing for that. Anyways, i wish you all the best for the fun that starts with figuring out all the details, and may inspiration be ever in your favor ;)
(and if you ever want to share some of the results, i'd be really happy to see where you take this!)
