I'm just starting to work on what I'm hoping is going to be a book but I can't even figure out the basic plot structure. The concept is basically stemming from the thought that in most books about what if there was magic, authors tend to forget that if there was, England may have successfully taken over the entire freaking world( I mean they have invaded pretty much every country- yes I know I'm a nerd). Then I thought oh Y'know what else. If you think of magic from a scientific point of view, People who can sense life would have found a planet with aliens, and, knowing how humanity works, would have been like yeah so this planet is ours now. The idea is that people who don't want to be ruled by England were the ones to escape to the other planet and thats great and all. A few hundred years later( what would be modern times), an English magic person finds the planet and oh no they're back and surprise surprise they want to rule the new planet too. How do I get a nerdy concept to become a plot that relates to my characters?

depends on who your characters are. For example you could have someone from another country who has heard of others escaping and have them attempt the same. This would give you an opportunity to display your world as the character gathers a group of friends and a way to get there. Also, if the character meets people on the way and runs into different groups of people, the readers get to see a large portion of your universe through these characters. Sorry i said that in such a random order! :)

I have one character that I was planning to have be from Earth but my original plan was for him to already be on the new planet. Maybe I could have the characters working against something that England has started to do that would further develop and provide reasoning behind making its rulers the "bad guys". Then my group of characters has to go undercover to stop it. I think my main block was that I didn't really give them a reason to have a conflict with England. Any other ideas would still be appreciated.
