forum Help me with My Plot!

So, I have this idea for a story. It's about this fantasy world in which humans born with magical powers are referred to as fey and executed by the central religious authority. The main character is a rebel who is attempting to find and recruit the only person who'd ever, successfully stood against the church. The only problem is that she's an infamously bi*chy witch who's been dead for 200 years. Their quest is to find a resurrect her so that she can join them and add validity to their group and help them prevail against the evil government. There's a handsome general who's hunting them and everything. The only problem is that I can't come up with a realistic religion. I want to make the church evil, but from what I understand about how religious operations operate, indoctrinated people who haven't ever known anything besides their religion are an obstacle I don't want to have to deal with trying to overcome. Any ideas?

If you want to create a religion you first have to decide what they follow. Whether that be a god or mother nature or whatever, the thing they follow is the most important part and the foundation of a religion. Then you have to set some rules that they follow and believe in and motives that make them think these are a good idea. Finally, most religions have some sort of book or prayers that they use to connect themselves to the higher power. Once you have this settled, hopefully, the motives and rules will have something against magic.
