So, I'm currently building a fantasy world for a series i have in mind, but i want to write a short story set in the world to help me get a feel for everything. Something like the Throne of Glass novellas or the Slow Regard of Silent Things, if anyone has read those.
My world has people called 'The Fated' who are to witches bound by fate to be either the greatest of allies, or the bitterest of enemies. Their appearance foreshadows–or is the cause of–some great war/battle/catastrophe. So, i need a plot for two previous Fated that appeared many years before the events of the main books. any thoughts?

Maybe… Two siblings, competing for the favor of a town/village. One screws up, becoming an enemy. The other becomes an ally, an adviser to leadership or something. The two siblings form their own families, and history seems to repeat itself each time. Or, the one that becomes an enemy can curse his/her sibling's family, causing fate to decide if they're destined to be good or bad for the rest of forever. These are just suggestions; it's your story. Good luck.

One question, then a couple ideas.

How long do the Fated generally live?

You could do a romance: the fated enemies unknowingly fall in love with each other or the same person.

A mix up, one Fated, probably in some high position in some kingdom, mistakes the Fated councilor of another kingdom as their ally, but they turn out to be enemies.

“The Trickster Fate”, just a name to play around with, see if there’s anything there.

A pair of enemy Fates were designated as a child’s godparents and then the parents died.

(Side note, I haven’t read the books you meantioned, so I hope these were along the line of what your were thinking.)

Hope these were helpful!

Thanks! these are pretty interesting. The Fated, and witches by extension, live a normal lifespan, no more than a hundred years, though due to their 'curse', they often die much younger. Im just looking for a bit of lore to tell, that doesn't really have a direct impact on the plot of the book.
