Like, I'm dying to get my hands on an original 50s precision bass guitar (and an amp to go with it), but guess who doesn't have $2000 (and another $100 for the amp I want) to blow on it??? So I'm stuck learning bass lines on my acoustic, which is fun and all if the difference in sound doesn't bother you and you aren't getting blisters on every fingertip. It just sorely irritates me that I can't afford to buy the things that could potentially make me money in the future, not to mention relieve stress and be just a whole lot of fun?? (bass guitar is heckin' fun, fight me)
i don't really care to fight you cause bass guitar sounds ultra cool when put together in a band (1st hand experience, tho i guess you could call it 2nd since i'm not in the band, just a local school band) but omg i totally feel you (except for the guitar stuff cause i play violin not guitar haha) but yes it bothers me a ton when i try to buy one book, yes one book at the store and it costs freaking $20 and I'm like it isn't even like signed or anything!
I bought a really cool violin for only 30 bucks once
I got the flute of my dreams for $1,200
that's good in terms of the flute i got
Oki first of all-
Lori: That's nice that the violin was cool, but 30 dollars ONLY?! I'm about 70% sure that that violin is/was of cheap/poor/bad quality, usually violins can get up into the thousands of dollars, even hundreds of millions or billions, even if they're "good" enough, for example take the classic Strads. Those are the ones that are costly, and I don't even know if they're even selling them at all anymore, at most rent I would guess.
@The-Moral-Ambiguity-of-Metaphors: I'm not sure what to call you, so I'll just use your username for now. Over a thousand dollars? Jeez I didn't know that flutes were even that expensive. And I thought violins were expensive. Was the flute at least of nice quality?
To both of you gals: So you two both play instruments huh? How cool!
To Lori again: Hey hey hey you play violin too? That's real nice :)
To anyone else out there who plays a viola: Hey you you play viola? That's amazing because violas are underrated and we need more of you. Yeah I'm making your section important :) Now you can feel like a 1st violin but instead of a violin, a viola! Hehe
bruh man, call me Emi, like, everyone does it.
Yes.
The flute was an open-hole, which is a step above the typical model student flute, which you can get pretty cheap on Amazon for like, a hundred bucks on sale. I got my student flute for seven-hundred bucks, because it used to be a rent. Poor Fhyll is too old (yes I named him).
More about my amazing new flute. The head joint is completely sterling silver, which actually does a lot for the sound. The rest of the body is steel (I think?). This is unlike student flutes, because student flutes are made both for concert and marching season (which we are currently in) so they are made of steel (or whatever flutes are made of. It might be nickle? I don't remember).
But what's so expensive about an open-hole silver-headed flute is the quality. I got the best in the market for ONLY that price. Music and Arts had it for 1,700, and it was my luck that they pricematched it for the 500 bucks cheaper.
Hey story time real quick: The Giardinelli I got was the model flute they hang up on the wall, so I cleaned it and accidentally broke it because I dislodged some dirt and a loose screw, and we took it back, and I got a genuinely brand-new one. So clean your instruments (especially woodwinds) when you get them, people!
Heh oki! Will keep that in mind if I ever learn the flute.

{Psssst…
You should.
Flutes are awesome.
Signed, a loyal flutist}
ALL I WANT IS BOOKS WHY IS MY AMAZON ORDER $110
(ye you definitely should)
@ Emi and other flutists on this discussion: Yeah, my flute is used too. Waaaaay cheaper, but still great quality!
I've had my $700 flute for five years (honestly it's probably older lmao because it's a rental)! It was expensive but nice. Flutes are nice.
Haha nice. Never met so many flutists in one place.
Ok, I guess I technically have, but not really cause I didn't talk to them.
I have no idea how much my violin will cost once I reach full-size but it better be cheap and good quality too. And now I'm gonna look up how much they cost lol
Oh, yeah, the "renting vs. buying" discussion you always have before buying a flute.
We bought mine immediately, because it was cheaper {somehow lol}
Honestly you probably don't wanna. Most flutists in my year (in my school) are absolute thots and I'm the only one who gives a shit xD
But hey it seems Grammar Queen is a nice flutist. I know there's more nice ones on this site.

We rented mine for a few months, then we just bought it when they could tell I was gonna keep with it. We have a really nice repair person near us, so even though my flute's old, it still sounds okay.

When talking to a flutist, you have a 50% chance you'll get an uptight brat and a 50% chance you'll get a sweet, caring person
There's no in between
I probably fall into the uptight brat side
Wow they range from $5,400 ($3,999 to be exact) to a very cheap $30 dollar violin.

Yeah, we knew I was gonna keep going because there was a really weird rule for a while at my school where it was, like, you had to take band x amount of years in a row, so I wouldn't've had a choice. Turns out I fell in love with playing!
I just realized that in a way flutists are lucky cause they get to keep their flute for longer and aren't likely to rent different flutes in different sizes the way us strings do.

Yep as I've said before, most of my year are upright bitches (excluding about one person and maybe me? I'm nicer than them, at least) and the rest of my section is suuuper nice.
So it's just like, chance.
Though there can be people in between. Like me. lmao

Hmmmm well that kind of depends. I have a friend who has had her viola for forever so idk
Ooh, fun fact about me: I can't read music while I play, but can do so moderately well when I'm not playing, so whenever we get new music I'm just hastily scribbling down the letters under the notes XD
