Whether you enjoy recent stuff such as Vampire Weekend and lovelytheband or the oldies such as Modest Mouse and The Cure, this chat is for you. A question to start us off: What do we think of Billie Eilish being famous and not other indie artists. Heck even lovelytheband was on Good Morning America and their songs played on the radio, but yet Billie is more favored. And, is this a sign of times changing for indie music to become the main love now???
I'm not actually sure what qualifies as "alternative" at this point. I've seen Nirvana, Rush, and even Primus labeled "alternative" on the radio, but I associate each band with their genre, Grunge and Progressive Rock, respectively.
I agree Yamatsu. I mean more Alternative like lovelytheband,OMAM,Vampire Weekend. Stuff like that. Stuff that has really no other category,Death Cab For Cutie, The Pierces, stuff like that.
Oof, yeah. I don't really listen to certain bands, but I listen to alternative in general and I hate how Billie Elish has pretty much taken over.
Well okay. See. I disagree. The age of Indie and Alternative is coming in,and Billie is just the first stepping stone. Epic kick ass rare music will now become the common, and I'm ready for it. I like Billie's music, not a huge fan, but I'm looking at the whole picture. We need someone to appeal to the people, let others slip in the crack ya know? lovelytheband was the first like eye opener. I saw them perform on Good Morning America and fell in love. They were played a lot on the radio. Halsey was an opener as well. Slowly we're taking over muwahahahahahaha!
It's not that I don't like her, I just dislike how her music has become the only thing people think of when hearing alternative.
Yeah…maybe with new bands on the rise that will change. And besides she's an entry way yeah? From Billie Eilish they could discover Melanie Martinez or Death Cab for Cutie, and from there, who knows? Modest Mouse possibly, and maybe even some old stuff like The Cure.
The only issue I see is that record companies are either going to flop altogether or try to compete with each other to see who can sign on the best new artist. Suddenly, you have people also competing for different labels, and all of the soul in their music is drained for the chance of making money. We'll be back to where we started in terms of having very rare, popular songs that aren't associated with any label.
Can't we just go back to the 20th century where bands were writing their own music or taking music from other writers and actually putting their soul into it? I hear rap nowadays that sounds like the guy was looking at his phone the entire time in the recording booth.
I also agree with that. I mean while yes I'm excited for the new age of music, I hope that money doesn't ruin it while knowing it probably will. It's a trick thing walking on the rim and seeing both sides of the coin.
"All this machinery
Making modern music
Can still be open-hearted
Not so coldly charted
It's really just a question
Of your honesty, yeah your honesty
One likes to believe
In the freedom of music
But glittering prizes
And endless compromises
Shatter the illusion
Of integrity, yeah"
–The Spirit of the Radio, Rush.
Love Rush…another thing
"The kids are disco dancing
They're tired of rock and roll
I try to tell them "hey that drum machine ain't got no soul"
But they don't want to listen no
They think they've herd it all
They trade those guitars in for drum machines and disco balls
We can rewind now we've gone too far
Internet killed the video star…(another verse that is important from this song
Did you hear what they said?
That rock and roll is dead?
Yeah it's like a zombie ti will dig it's self back up again
Tune in the signal but it's fading
Some ghost strumming his guitar on the radio
Singing "oh the glory days are gone but everything OK
'Cause we still love our sex and drugs just like the good ol' days" "
Internet Killed The Video Star-The Limousines
Oo, isnt Legends Never Die an indie/alternative song?
Sort of? Still a hella good song 👌
I know that was random, but it came on as I read the discussion, lol.
Tis fine. I listen to way to much alternative and nobody else does. I just wanna talk music
I listen to alternative indie, though it's not my first and favorite genre
I do love a specific band and singer, like
McCafferty and DREAMERS
…two bands I've never heard of. I'll check em out. My fav singer will always be Regina Spektor
