This chain is to discuss the types of magic possible and where they should fit into a story. For example, I sometimes feel as if I need to increase the amount of magic used in my fantasy world, but I don't want it to be overpowering. Also, this chain can help anyone who feels as if their characters either use the same techniques to the point where it's too repetitive or if characters have basic powers that just need a twist. Feel free to discuss the magic strategies used and the levels of skill some of your characters have. With all that being said, have fun!

I think the main thing to consider is whether or not magic is normalized in your universe. Can all children do simple spells, or do only specific people have the gift? Does is all take a long time to master or does it come naturally? How characters perceive magic really determines the frequency with which it should be used. (also I think it would be totally endearing to have a protagonist that only knew one (decently useless) spell that they rely on whole heartedly.)

You're right, that's always very important in a story when dealing with putting magic into your characters' lives. It's important to consider the time it took to learn magic and the frequency it is used, but it's just as good to know the level of their magic in the society and how much it drains them upon use. (I agree completely that a protagonist with one rather useless spell would be delightful and charming.)

I used the idea of overpowered magic as a plot point of mine. The government of my world thought that the people had too much power and so decided to outlaw the use of magic (in my case, runes). The criminal gangs are now some of the only people that know how to use the magic and thus, the whole plot is that these criminals need to come together to fight the corrupt government.

I think you also need to think about the scope of characters you are using. In my case, I employ a unique brand of physics based around the 'soul' and magic is a very specialised thing that only specific types of souls can perform - but the flip side to that is most of my characters are these special cases, rather than normies, so magic in my universe seems very normalized.
