i have it called null kinesis atm. the only magic form in my world. it allows someone to freeze or cancel someone else's eminent action. it's not really as much magic as it is a defective ability heightened by an item :) still tryin 2 figure out how it works oof so any idea or suggestion is greatly appreciated

It sounds like you are doing movement magic, so here's some suggestions on how to control/wield it
1) how much energy does it take
-do you have to have the physical strength to stop the movement
-do you need a certain amount of mental capacity to use it
-if you use it for something to large does it kill you? or just break the item?
2) how do you use it
-do you move your hands or chant a spell?
-is it where you have to use various items together to reach the goal?
-do you have to use the item or just wear it?
3) is there limits to the item?
-is there situations that it works better for?
-does it have something where if it comes in contact it breaks?
-does it have a mental state that has feelings
-do certain people have to use it?
4) history
-where did it come from
-how did it land in the possession of your main character
-who made it

I hope that I helped, these are things I take into account when making my magic.

Okay, some questions to help you flesh it out:

  • What are its limits? Can users only cancel purposeful actions, like someone going to punch them, or can they cancel accidental actions, like someone falling? Can they cancel animal actions? What about things that move in nature (a falling tree, the rain, a tsunami). How long does the 'freeze' last? Is it harder to stop a full grown man from punching you in the face than it is to stop a 3-year-old picking up a ball?
  • Who can do it? Do you need the right item, the right bloodline, the right beliefs? Do you need training or practice? How do you improve - with practice, with a more magical item?
  • Where does the magic stem from? A person's soul, the air around them (the Force), a deity or magical creature, the item they're holding?
  • How common is it? Does everyone have some level of ability in it? Are there only 3 users of it in the whole country? (For example, with my magic system, every person in the world has the base level magic ability, but you need a lot of training with an experienced magic user to get good at anything.)
  • Can someone 'freeze' the freezing? (e.g. can you counter a counterspell)
  • How does it work? Does the user have to say something, move their hands, throw pixie dust, think focused thoughts, etc.

Will they have to learn how to use it and gradually get better? because if so then you could make it more and more easy on yourself to use it
