I’m not sure if this is helpful but this jeweller lists some of the common cultural associations with common gemstones: https://www.wixonjewelers.com/education/gemstones/gemstone-guide/
For example, they mention that according to legend, garnet keeps away nightmares. If one of your characters has a traumatic past or deep fears they might choose garnet with the belief that it will drive off their terrors.
