I’ve been listening to Black Sea Gale by the Dreadnoughts on loop recently, and it’s gotten me in the mood to do some fantasy pirates. Anyways, I’ve also created some fantasy races inspired partially by classic lit, partially my own imagination too, so I’d say that it’s about time I used them! Feel free to guess which ones are classic lit and which ones are not. I’ll describe the plot first, then the races, then I’ll explain a little bit about the world overall, and finally, I’ll post rules and a template.
Plot is simple. A group of pirates, knotted fast together as found family, terrorizing the high seas and trying to take down the monarchy that has destroyed their homes and lives. But, well, the money doesn’t hurt either. Basically more evil versions of Robin Hood that do pirate stuff.
Species one: The Prometheus. The Prometheus are dead brought back to life through secret alchemic means only their species know, and have never told of. They generally are made of many corpses, animal and human, and generally stand taller than many of their counterparts in species, save for the Harpy. They are identified via no specific means, but generally the height and stitches give it away. They consider themselves across the species as family and incest is frowned upon, but relationships with other species are fine. They tend to adopt outcasts and make them into honorary Prometheus. They are immortal unless directly killed.
Species two: The Janus. Janus are a species that values family, and connection to the wilderness, so much so that they can biologically connect with other creatures. Janus are technically two species, humanoid people with bioluminescent skin, and spidery blobs, but the spidery blobs are able to symbiotically connect to host bodies of the Janus to the point where people assume a Janus is incomplete without their symbiotic spider blob counterpart. Janus with a counterpart are regarded as holy and have a vast empire across the five continents, but the few Janus without counterparts are usually outcasts who join up with other species, mainly Prometheus, to find sanctuary. The Prometheus and Harpy accept unconnected Janus, but Oracle and Humans do not. Janus that are connected can transform into another body kinda like Venom but more morally better for the mentality they carry.
Species three: The Ares. Basically, vampires. This one is easy to guess, the basis is from Dracula! They cannot use their powers in direct sunlight, but the powers they do have are quite useful when able to be used. They can fly, they can transform into wolves at will, they can also transform into bats, and they can mind control. Again, these powers can only be used outside of direct sunlight, like in a room without windows. They have immortality sustained by blood, and if you eat their heart they will die and you will become an Ares. Ares can be identified by black veins and red eyes that glow in the dark and with strong emotions.
Species four: The Oracle. The Oracle are a hive mind that can foresee the future. They look like humanoid insects, specifically the Bee. Men are slimmer and smaller than women, and women are stronger and taller than men. They are a Matriarchy, with a Queen Bee, worker females that are sterile unless evolved into Queens, and worker males that generally take care of less strenuous tasks like messengers and consorts and are typically found in Queen Oracle courts. They are allied closely with the Janus.
Species Five: The Harpy. They’re bird-human chimeras. They’re bird people basically. Harpy are a nomadic species, keeping to small groups and only meeting others outside their clans or families in order to reproduce. They have fairly primitive minds, but are terrific hunters. They take the form of giant winged humans, with feathers all about their body and gold eyes.
There are also Humans, if you’d rather not have a superpowered character.
Anyways, Janus control the world, their Monarchy having colonized basically every section of the land with one King ruling over the land and Oracle Queens controlling the specific towns and cities. There are five continents, all colonized mostly, with Humans and Oracle making up 60% ish of the population about equally, Janus making up 20% ish, Ares making 10 and Prometheus and Harpy making 5 and 5 respectively due to Oracle Queens genociding most of their species. Prometheus and Harpy do not like Oracle, Ares are happy to exist so long as they are fed their rations of blood to stay immortal, and Oracle and Humans and Janus are strongly allied, with Oracle workers making up most of the builders and farmers and Human workers being artisans and crafters and artists mostly, otherwise farming with the Oracle. The Monarchy is evil but effective, they run their country through fear and power and they use their power to keep power, not to help the people. The country still functions, but executions are common for even petty crimes, but of course the rich escape the law more often than not. This doesn’t mean the Janus are bad at keeping power or keeping their kingdom running, it just means they suck as people and are cruel. Rebels and pirates have risen up, but have all been crushed eventually.
