"Manny! Manny!"
It was Emma, obviously, because Eli was carrying Jaiden was in his arms, her face buried into his chest as she slept. He looked like he had just gotten out of bed. His hair was an absolute mess, his clothes were wrinkled and worn, and he had a sleepy grin on his face. Work ended only an hour ago, but he had made a promise to take them to Build-a-Bear and get them each a bear and two outfits.
Emma was already inside of the store, having sprinted across the length of the mall in her excitement. She stared up at the stuffing machine, her eyes sparkling with wonder only a 6 year old could understand. They both looked very well dressed in high quality clothes, washed, hair braided or, in Jaiden's case, put into two tiny ponytails because she didn't quite have enough hair for a full one.
Manon hadn't been inside a Build-A-Bear since she was five, the last time her mother had been allowed to support her 'frivolous child tendencies'. So when the family she'd been hired to protect from the shadows headed into the Build-A-Bear in the mall, she had to pause for a moment. Things like this always surprised her. Watching children get to be children, without the responsibilities and punishments for messing up. And this family was a prime example of all the things she'd missed out on.
Shaking off whatever funk had taken over her, she tossed her golden hair over her shoulder, striding into the Build-A-Bear. It would be interesting, looking around while keeping an eye on the family. So at least there was that.
Jaiden lifted her head from Eli's chest, peering around sleepily with her large green eyes.
"Toy?" she asked inquisitively, looking up at her big brother.
"Yes, toy," he agreed, setting her down and letting her pick out her own.
Emma already had the animal that she wanted, a hammerhead shark that was giving everyone a happy grin. There was a sea themed special this month at Build-A-Bear, so there was a lot of blue, white, and green on the walls. Jaiden enjoyed the color scheme greatly, smiling idly at the walls as she walked for one of the racks that held the original styled bears. As usual, the small child wasn't paying attention to where she was going and ended up bumping into Manon.
"Oop!" she exclaimed, stumbling back a few steps and putting a chubby hand on the top of her own head. "Sowwie!"
( :) )
Manon blinked as something collided with her legs, miraculously not wobbling despite the sheer height of her heels. "Oh, dear. Are you alright?" She asked, looking down at the little girl who'd run into her. Two years. You watch them for two years, without being caught, and an accident is how you first make contact. There was something almost amusing about that. But this was most likely a one time thing, and she would just have to be extra careful not to let them catch sight of her again.
"Mhm!" Jaiden hummed happily, looking up at her with wide eyes. "Woah. Tallllllll!" When she finished the word, she jumped up into the air as high as she could, trying to reach Manon's head. When she couldn't reach it, she took a different approach. A small flash of light shined from her chest, shrouding her in a white glow. Then, in a split second, she changed from a toddler to a 6 foot tall giraffe. The giraffe looked somewhat perturbed by the fact that she still wasn't as tall as Manon and switched back to the little girl.
Eli glanced over when he realized what the flash of light was, and caught only the head of Manon and a giraffe pocking over the rack.
"Woahwoahwoah!" he exclaimed, hurrying over to Jaiden and picking the little girl up again. His hazel eyes were wide with concern as he glanced over at Manon, giving her the once-over to check for injuries. "Did she kick you? Typically she does that to kick things."
(Would magic be a hidden thing, or just the norm?)
Manon raised an eyebrow at the giraffe suddenly standing in front of her, lips quirking up into a small smile. "I guess I am, yes." She said with a nod, watching the girl change back. Her head jerked up just a bit too fast as Eli's voice carried over to them, and a momentary flicker of something like panic passed through her. Another set of eyes to recognize you.
She shook her head slightly, waving a hand dismissively. "No, no, she did not. I believe it was an attempt at being taller than me." She said, shrugging a shoulder. "I am fine. That is quite the skill though, and must be an interesting one to deal with. Especially if she tries to kick."
"Okay, good," he said, glancing down as the girl began poking him in the chest. "Her sister had to learn the hard way that teasing Jaiden while she's a giraffe isn't a good idea." Eli looked up and offered Manon a hand. "I'm Eli, by the way."
A dark figure slowly passed the front of the shop, its face hidden by a large black cloak that removed any distinguishable features from view. It gave off a menacing vibe, so much so that even Eli turned around to look out the exit. He didn't even know why he did, but the sight of the figure made him shiver.
(:) )
Manon eyed his hand for a moment before taking it, grip firm and business like, witch somehow simultaneously managed to make perfect sense and clash with her vibes she put off. "Manon. Though, most people refer to be by my last name. They do not like pronouncing foreign sounds." She said, accent rolling off her tongue and giving her a sort of imperious air, though in more of an airy sense. Her eyes flickered to the figure briefly, following Eli's gaze as her blue eyes darkened for a moment. Trouble. That is exactly what that is.
"Manny!" It was Emma, standing next to the stuffing machine with an annoyed look on her face and her hands on her hips. "You promised to let us pick out a Build-a-Bear!"
"Yeah, I did…" he turned back to Manon and smiled. "Well, Manon, it was nice meeting you, but I have a little sister to entertain." He pronounced her name perfectly, making it a point to do so. Why? To try and impress her, duh.
