Kamryn laughed, the clear noise echoing through the park. "You can't be serious, James," she said, winking at the attractive guy beside her.
"But I-I am!" He stammered.
Kamryn laughed again, enjoying his embarrassment. "But James, you know I already dated you once, and that was quite enough for me!"
"But I can do better!" He pleaded.
She shook her finger in his face. "Nuh uh."
Eli glanced over at the commotion, shaking his head in response to the conversation. Forget it, he said, None of your business.
"Hey," a woman who rested next to him said. "That's very good."
He put a hand over the strings and turned to her, smiling slightly. "It ain't much, but thanks."
James looked heartbroken. It had clearly taken all his courage to ask her, and now it was shattered. He probably wouldn't be asking anyone out for a while. Kamryn sniffed importantly. She had once chosen him for his looks, but now he just looked ordinary.
He resumed plying as the woman walked away, adding a bit of volume as conversations began to rise. The damn thing was just so quiet.
Kamryn clicked her fingers in front of his face. "I said no. Now leave."
Finally someone around the two jumped in. "Hey, give the guy a break," a middle aged woman said.
Kamryn glared at the woman. "This is a free country, lady. I suggest you leave it. Besides, he asked for it."
The woman rolled her eyes, but didn't say anything more as James sulked away dejectedly.
Eli watched him walk away with a frown.
Kamryn snickered and sauntered away.
He shook his head again, and resumed playing, trying to ignore the commotion in the shelter and get lost in the music.
