Ophelia, caught in the spell of their dance and the adoring gaze of her husband, feels like she's in a world of her own. Her heart dances along with their steps, and she surrenders herself to Kaillas's expert lead. The way he holds her, his touch both strong and gentle, sends waves of warmth through her.

As they move gracefully across the floor, Ophelia is aware of the hushed admiration from the courtiers. She can almost hear their collective gasps and whispers of awe. But her focus remains solely on Kaillas, the man who has transformed her life in the most beautiful way.

She feels like a star, her gown shimmering like the night sky, as they twirl and glide through the dance. In Kaillas's arms, she finds herself both grounded and soaring, a perfect harmony of love and partnership.

When he dips her low at the end of the dance, she looks up at him, her eyes sparkling with love and trust. His words, unspoken but deeply felt, reassure her that she's safe in his embrace, that he will always be there to catch her, both in dance and in life.

@ElderGod-yellowqueen

Kaillas lowered his head and pressed their lips together. It didn't matter to him that this ballroom was full of courtiers and lords and her family. To him, there was no one there, not yet. And there was no perfect time than this to kiss his wife and express his love for her. As he pulled her upright, he finally separated from their kiss, however reluctant he was to do so.

As the music ended, it was as if life had come back to him. The applause around them faded in, increasing in intensity and volume. Their figures became distinct and he could see his sisters clapping the loudest for them. He smiled at them then before focusing back on Ophelia. "Another dance, darling?" He asked.

The floor had already begun to flood with other couples, preparing to dance for the next song. And for the opportunity to dance alongside the king and queen and wish they would be as graceful as they had been.

The music struck up again and he guided Ophelia into a dance known well by the court but perhaps not as much for Ophelia. He was unsure of what her lessons had consisted of while he had been gone. But he wouldn't let her stumble. And he had promised to dance with her all night.

@LolaBug

As Kaillas lowers his head and presses their lips together in the midst of the grand ballroom, time seems to stand still for Ophelia. She feels the soft brush of his lips against hers, and the world around them melts away. In this stolen moment, it doesn't matter that the ballroom is filled with courtiers, lords, and their family. To her, there is only Kaillas. His affection envelopes her, and she feels as if they are the only two souls in existence. As he finally pulls her upright, reluctantly breaking their kiss, a warm flush of affection fills her heart.

The end of the music brings her back to the bustling reality of the ballroom. Applause erupts around them, and for a moment her eyes met those of his sisters, who are clapping the loudest.

At his question, she nods with a soft grin, her heart dancing as the music strikes up once more. As they glide onto the dance floor, she can't help but feel a surge of gratitude for the man by her side. She may not be as experienced in the these courtly dances as he is, but she knows she has the best partner in the world.

Their steps are graceful, and Kaillas guides her with ease through the intricate dance known to the court. Her worries about stumbling or embarrassing herself disappear with every step they took together. With Kaillas, she feels like she can conquer anything.

@ElderGod-yellowqueen

Kaillas led her through the dance. No words were said, none needed to be. The joy was evident on his face, with that lightness in his eyes and the smile on his face. The dance was relatively easy and repetitive. It would have been easy for his wife to pick up. Nevertheless, he still guided her through the steps until the song came to an end.

He led her through one more dance before his sisters stole away his attention. Katya was all but jumping at the opportunity to dance with him and he couldn't refuse her. With a kiss on her knuckles, he led Ophelia off the dance floor and rejoined with Katya instead. He swung her around to the upbeat music, her giggles filling the room.

Elora's attention had been stolen by her guard as they danced around the floor. She did well at concealing her true feelings for him among the courtiers, though it was a risk to be dancing with him in front of all of them. They would certainly talk, and Kaillas had likely already noticed the two of them. But she wanted to enjoy this night. She had all but forced Aedion on the floor with her, but he seemed to be enjoying himself well enough with that grinning smile on his lips.

And thus, this left Ophelia unguarded against her parents. Something Kaillas hadn't meant to happen.

@LolaBug

The dance is relatively straightforward and repetitive, designed for courtly elegance, and Ophelia quickly picks up the steps. Still, she appreciates that he continues to guide her through each movement, his touch gentle and reassuring. Their graceful dance continues until the song comes to an end, and she finds herself longing for more moments like this with her husband. But as the music shifts and the dance floor fills with other couples, Kaillas is momentarily stolen away by his sisters.

She watches with a fond smile as Katya practically bounds toward her brother, eager for her turn to dance with him. The sight of their joyous twirls and Katya's infectious giggles fills the room, and she can't help but feel grateful for her newfound family. Meanwhile, Elora seems to have found herself dancing with her guard, a daring move in front of the courtiers. The girl does well at concealing her true feelings for him, but the risk is undeniable. The court will certainly talk, and Kaillas has likely already noticed the two of them. She silently wishes her sister-in-law well, hoping that she would find happiness in her secret romance.

The guests, courtiers, and nobles revel in the festivities, their laughter and chatter echoing through the ornate halls. But amidst the glittering splendor, a cloud of discomfort looms. She notices her parents approaching, their expressions less than congenial. Her mother's painted smile barely conceals the edge of impatience in her eyes, while her father wears a stern, disapproving countenance. It's evident they have a matter to discuss, and it's anything but subtle.

"Ophelia," her mother begins abruptly, making no effort to disguise her rudeness, "we've been waiting long enough. It's high time you start thinking about fulfilling your duty and providing us with a grandchild." Her father, equally impolite, adds, "You and Kaillas have had plenty of time to enjoy your marriage. It's about time you focused on your responsibilities to the family and the kingdom."

The words hang heavily in the air, a palpable tension settling over the trio. Ophelia feels as though she's been backed into a corner, forced to confront their unreasonable demands.

@ElderGod-yellowqueen

While it was an easy smile, Elora did well to guard her expressions. She should appear as nothing more than taking her guard out for a spin on the floor. She was already known to be somewhat brazen and bizarre, and do things out if the ordinary. It wasn't out if character for her to be dancing with one of her sworn protectors. It didn't make it any less scandalous but at least it wasn't strange behavior coming from her. She would be able to pass it off as nothing, just wanting to dance with a friend of hers. And she would save the rest of her night, and dances, for the single men gracing their ball tonight. She wouldn't give Aedion a second look, something twisted her gut. It was something that twisted his own, unbeknownst to her.

Kaillas was spinning Katya around, grinning as she giggled loud for all to hear. He exaggerated their movements if only to hear her laugh. After these past few weeks, it was rare to see her smile, much laugh. He would treasure this sound and do anything to hear it again. He would do anything for his sisters as long as they were safe and happy. And in that order.

As they did a circle around the floor, he caught eye of Ophelia, and who was with her. His chest filled rage but there wasn't anything he could do to help her. At least not personally. He wouldn't end his dance with Katya, who so desperately wanted his attention. And to bail out of the dance half way would only cause a scene. Something he knew his lovely wife didn't want. So he did the next best thing. He searched the crowd for Ambrose, catching his eye and matching quickly movements that only he would truly understand. Then Ambrose was moving through the crowd and Kaillas felt like he could breathe again.

Ambrose slithered through the crowd, silent and swift. He had his eyes on the queen without making his intentions too obvious. No one around them needed to know there was an issue. It wasn't their business nor would it look good for either parties. There enough already on their plates. They didn't need this added to it as well.

"My Queen, your majesties," Ambrose greated Ophelia first before her parents. "Apologies for the interruption, but I have been dying to ask Her Majesty for a dance. Unless, of course, you were asking your daughter for a dance?"

(You know how I said I knew how I wanted to play out this conflict? I forgot it 🙃)

@LolaBug

Ophelia's heart quickens as she spots Kaillas dancing with Katya, their laughter filling the air. She knows how hard it has been for them in recent weeks, and the sight warms her, filling her with relief.

But that relief is short-lived when her attention has to return to her parents badgering her about having an heir. Why it matters to them so much, she doesn’t know. Any children of hers will be raised in this kingdom, not theirs. There’s something more to this line of questioning but she just doesn’t know what her. It’s concerning but she can’t let it show. With so many people around, someone would be bound to notice her discomfort and that could end poorly.

She’s flooded with relief when she notices Kaillas’ gaze locking onto her and then switching to Ambrose. She can read the anger and frustration in his eyes, fully aware that he's trapped between his duties as a brother and his desire to protect her. While he himself can’t help her, at least he’s sending someone to help.

As Ambrose approaches, she silently thanks fate for his presence, a lifeline in this delicate situation. When Ambrose greets her first, she smiles warmly at him, grateful for his quick thinking.

However, her parents are less pleased by this sudden request. Queen Charlotte’s expression remains skeptical, while King William's frown deepens. Such disruptions are unfamiliar territory for them during important events like this. They are used to everyone bending to their will and being too afraid to approach.

“A dance sounds wonderful,” She agrees at once, not even giving her parents a chance to open their mouths. She steps forward to go with Ambrose, trying to get away quickly so they can’t come up with a reason to stop her.

(That’s okay, I’m sure you’ll figure out something else! It happens to me all the time XD)

@ElderGod-yellowqueen

Kaillas kept an open eye on Ophelia, even as Ambrose approached and reached her. He didn't let on to Katya that he was nervous and brimming with anger. He didn't want to interrupt this for her. She was having such a good time. He grabbed her by the waist, spinning her around and cherishing the excited noises she made. And as he set her back on the ground, his eyes searched for Ophelia in the crowd once more. Relief flooded him as he saw Ambrose leading her away from her parents and on to the dance floor.

Ambrose took Ophelia's hand and led her out to the ball's dance floor without a second glance to her parents. He had never particularly liked them, even before Ophelia joined them. Any communication with them about trade and borders had always been a hassle and a fight with pretty words. Which was why he handled the communications and not Kailas. If Kaillas had, they would have no allies at all. He had a tendency to say what was on his mind and didn't sugarcoat things.

While the dance was over halfway done, Ambrose still swept her up and joined the other couples on the floor in perfect rhythm. While he may have been a soldier, courtier fit him so much better. He belonged here, not on the battlefield, but he would always fight by his king's side should he have him.

"Why are your parents so concerned about you having a child?" He asked, voice low enough that only she would hear. "You are married. It cannot be undone." At least not without taking extreme measures, and ones Kaillas would never take. He loved her too much. "And any child that is born of the two of you will stay here. So why does it matter so much to them?"

He wanted answers. He wanted the truth. He had his own little network of spies, even though their spymaster truly hated that fact. He was digging for answers yet each was a dead end. It irritated him to no end. He would find out in the end. And if they were a danger to Kaillas or his family, he would take the necessary steps to eliminate that threat.

(It'll come back to me. At least, I hope it will.)

@LolaBug

Ambrose's strong and graceful movements on the dance floor carries Ophelia into a world of distraction, at least momentarily. She responds to his lead, her eyes meeting his with a weak smile that betrays her relief at escaping her parents' watchful eyes. She feels a rush of gratitude for Ambrose, not just for this momentary reprieve, but for the way he always has Kaillas’ back and now hers as well.

As the music swirls around them, she listens intently to his question, their close proximity allowing for a private conversation within the grandeur of the ball. Her expression turns pensive as she considers his words. "It's complicated, Ambrose," she replies softly, her gaze drifting towards her parents who are now engaged in polite conversation with another noble couple.

“They may dislike Kaillas but they do not wish to undo our marriage.” While her parents have no fondness towards her husband, she knows that they aren’t willing to break up the marriage. This alliance is too important. Their kingdom needs the resources of this one to continue to thrive.

"I've tried to reason with them, to make them understand," She says, her frustration evident. "But they remain stubborn in their views, blinded by their desire for power and control." She pauses, taking a breath. "I fear their obsession with this issue might escalate into something dangerous, something that could threaten Kaillas and our kingdom.”

“Though I do have a few ideas as to why they’re so insistent on us having a baby, and soon, I cannot say for certain what their exact reasoning is.” She knows that they have plans but she’s been left in the dark. Her parents never tell her anything.

(I’m sure it will)

@ElderGod-yellowqueen

(Damn, I should have just told you so then it would have been written down XD)

Ambrose was careful not to step on her gown, though he was more graceful about it than Kaillas was. While his king was an excellent dancer, he just wasn't quite as fluid as Ambrose himself was. He had been the one to teach him, after all. He made brief eye contact with the king, nodding once before focusing on the queen in his arms.

"Everything is complicated, Your Majesty. You still need to tell us about it." He followed her line of sight back to her parents, his eyes immediately locking on to the couple they were speaking to. Beatrice. She wasn't supposed to be back yet, not after her complicated birth. And yet, here she was, looking beautiful as ever. If only it had been him.

"So they willingly married you off to a king they didn't like?" He looked back down at her. It wasn't uncommon for monarchs to marry their children for alliances, but to be so open about their dislike? It was a good thing Kaillas was as kind as he was. She could have easily landed in someone's hands that would not be so kind. Like Beatrice-

He spun her, letting her gown fan out and pushing those around them further away. As he brought her back into him, he spoke again lowly, "I will not let it get to that point. It's my job to keep you safe." That and about several dozen other jobs, but Kaillas's safety, along with his family, was the most important thing. "You need to tell us everything. You, me, and Kaillas will sit down tomorrow and talk about it. The longer you keep things to yourself, the bigger of a risk you're taking with everyone's safety."

@LolaBug

(Yes, spoilers are always the way to go XD)

Ophelia can certainly appreciate the grace with which Ambrose moves. While her husband is a wonderful dancer, it doesn’t seem to come as naturally to him. She shifts her attention to Kaillas and offers a small reassuring smile when she meets his gaze. She knows that he’s worried for her but she wants him to be able to enjoy his time with his sisters. It’s important that they’re able to spend time together.

“I am not keeping any secrets, Ambrose. I truly do not know the reason for this obsession. As I said, I may have a few ideas but they are just that, ideas.” She isn’t keeping any important information to herself. The fact that Ambrose doesn’t seem to believe that isn’t something that’s pleased with. She’s given him no reason to distrust her so this suspicion admittedly rubs her the wrong way. Especially since she had been under the impression that they were starting to get along.

Out of the corner of her eye, she spots Beatrice. After the horrible birth the poor woman had, she should not be back so soon. She’s concerned that this will put too much of a strain on her. Though she doubts she will be able to do anything about the situation, she’ll be sure to keep her eye on Beatrice throughout the evening to ensure that she’s alright.

“And yes, they willingly married me off to a king they didn't like. It was all for the sake of their alliances and power. You met my parents, you know what they’re like.” The alliance was necessary and to be honest, her parents don’t like anyone so it isn’t shocking that they shipped her off to the first king who would take her.

“I am taking no risks involving anyone’s safety and it would be wise for you to not accuse me of such again.” Perhaps her tone is sharper than need be and perhaps she truly is just reading into his words too much but after that conversation with her parents, she’s low on patience. She has no problem sitting down and discussing things with Kaillas and Ambrose but she will not allow the latter to speak to her in such a way.

@ElderGod-yellowqueen

Despite the heaviness of the conversation, Ambrose couldn't help but smile. It was more of a smug smirk than anything, he rarely ever truly smiled. And his genuine smiles were reserved for one woman, and the very woman he couldn't have. She belonged to someone else. Well, more like he believed he had a claim on her ever since her parents sold her to her husband. And she didn't want Ambrose to save her. So he loved her from afar and loved her silently.

"You truly are the perfect match," he said, a completely opposite direction of their conversation. "Your parents may have given you to the first taker but I don't think I've ever met anyone more perfect for each other than the two of you." They were like two halves of the same soul. It was frightening almost. His heart squeezed with jealousy of the love he would never have, but he was so happy for his friend to have finally found his perfect person.

He has met her parents, and each interaction he's had with them he had to resist hitting his head against a wall. Walking on hot coals would be less painful than having a conversation with them. But he was diplomatic and knew he to delegate, unlike several on their council, so it was he who had to deal with them and every other monarch they had established trade and alliances with. It almost made him wish he was a brute like Kaillas who couldn't hold his tongue. Then maybe the job could be passed to someone else. But he didn't trust anyone else not to fuck it up, so back to him it was.

"Careful, Your Majesty, you're starting to sound like a queen." While he doubted he and Ophelia would ever be friends, he did admire her. And he was happy to see her finally standing up for herself. She had been such a docile little thing when she had first come to them. Now she was blossoming into a woman and a queen. All she had needed was Kaillas to encourage her.

He would always question her, as he did to Kaillas. But in front of others, they would be a unified front. He had Kaillas's back, and by extension, hers. But in the privacy of closed doors, he would pick apart everything they had said and ensure it was the right thing to do. To make sure they believed wholly in their decisions.

@LolaBug

The sudden topic change catches her off guard and for a moment, she remains silent. Though she’s happy to hear that he thinks that she and Kaillas are such a perfect match, she detects something else in his tone. Envy? She isn’t quite sure. The thought lingers on her mind, making her wonder if there is someone special in Ambrose’s life, someone who he can’t be with. She is, of course, curious but she knows that he won’t share even if she asks.

She respects his privacy so she won’t look into the matter further. Ophelia's smile, though tinged with a hint of sadness, brightens at Ambrose's words. "Thank you," she says sincerely. "I do believe Kaillas and I are fortunate to have found each other, despite the circumstances. He's brought warmth and kindness into my life that I never imagined possible."

“I suppose I should sound like a Queen at least occasionally,” She replies with a light chuckle. Between Kaillas’ support and encouragement and the pressure of not being bullied by the ladies of the court, she has had to grow a backbone. Her first day here she could hardly look anyone in the eyes and now she’s actually standing up for herself and handling politics with a level head. Admittedly, she is rather proud of herself.

While she recognizes the need to have Ambrose question her and ensure that she isn’t a threat to this kingdom, she doesn’t appreciate that he was accusing her of being such to begin with. She would never do anything to hurt anyone. Her parents may be a threat to the kingdom but she isn’t. At least not intentionally….

As the song comes to an end, she takes a step back and thanks Ambrose, mostly for saving her from that unfortunate conversation with her parents. She can only handle their overbearing questions for so long before she shuts down. Since Kaillas is busy with his sisters, she’s going to go grab a drink and find a quiet little corner to hide away in for a little while.

@ElderGod-yellowqueen

Ambrose has never truly cared about what people think about him. He wasn't there to cater to people's feelings and make them feel nice. He spoke the truth, whether it was cutthroat or not. At least to those he didn't need to play nice with. Dealing with other monarchs was an entirely different thing than talking to his advisors. And when he didn't have to play nice, he certainly did not.

"You sound more like a queen than you think. You will do well here I think. Perhaps you might lead this country and Kaillas can play the stay-at-home wife. He might enjoy that." They both knew he would be riddled with anxiety. And Kaillas was never very good at letting anyone take more responsibility. He believed that he had to bear the weight of the world on his shoulders so no one else had to have a care for the world.

He spun her rapidly as the song came to an end, dipping her effortlessly. He straightened her and bowed deeply at the waist. "If you need saving, I'm a glance away." The last thing he needed was Kaillas making a scene here in front of everyone. He would be the buffer that she needed. Or he would send someone else in his place to be more discreet.

As Ambrose exited the floor, he passed by Beatrice, brushing his hand against hers as he walked by. No one noticed. They were all too busy with the conversations at hand or drinking too heavily to notice anything other than what was right in their faces.

Kaillas took Elora into a dance next, passing a look at Aedion who expressed his dislike with him dancing with his sister. The guard at least had the decency to lower his gaze. He leveled a look at Elora, who just gave him a sweet, innocent smile, that suggested she was up to nothing. Which he of course knew better than that. As much as he openly expressed his dislike for his sisters talking about boys, he would be subtle about this. He wasn't going to throw a fit. Or cause a scene. At least not yet.

He searched the crowd for his wife, trying to find her through the mangle of bodies. He hated the idea of her being out there alone. He would be glued to her side if he could.

Genevive approached the queen, dipping into a small curtsey as she approached. "Your Majesty, happy birthday." She smiled kindly at her, taking a sip of her wine. "You and His Majesty looked absolutely stunning during your dance. And your gown is absolutely radiant." She, of course, already knew who her seamstress was, despite Kaillas trying to keep it hidden. She was an extension of her husband and an excellent spy herself.

@LolaBug

An amused smile tugs at her lips as she imagines Kaillas being a stay-at-home wife. Her poor husband would absolutely lose his mind. The man is too insistent on taking on the weight of the world. She would love for him to have less responsibilities so they could spend more time together but something tells her that’s not going to happen. They didn’t even get to enjoy their full honeymoon after all.

As Ambrose gracefully twirls her on the dance floor, Ophelia’s smile grows a little more. She nods appreciatively at his offer of protection. "I'll keep that in mind, Ambrose, thank you," she replies with a hint of playfulness in her voice. She knows that the court can be a treacherous place, and having someone like him in her corner is undoubtedly an advantage.

She collects her drink before stepping off to the side of the ballroom. A quick look around tells her that her parents are still occupied so she doesn’t have to worry about them bothering her again. Not yet at least. She sips at her drink, gradually relaxing. This moment of peace and quiet is exactly what she needed to compose her. Today has been rather crazy. Though most of the day has been fun, her parents are managing to ruin every little thing. She can’t wait for them to leave in the morning.

Noticing that she’s being approached, she quickly puts a smile on her face. It wouldn’t be good for anyone to think that she’s anything short of happy right now. Gossip spreads like wildfire and she would like to avoid being at the center of it if she can help it.

She greets the other woman, welcoming her company. Genevive's compliment on her gown doesn't go unnoticed, and Ophelia inclines her head graciously. "Thank you. The talents of the seamstress never cease to amaze me," she says, her voice carrying genuine appreciation. She knows the importance of surrounding herself with trusted confidantes, and Genevive will hopefully be one of them.

“Are you enjoying yourself so far?” She asks politely, wanting to ensure that her guests are having a good time.

@ElderGod-yellowqueen

Kaillas would most certainly talk with Elora and Aedion separately. His main concern was that her guard was there for just that, to guard her. It was a distraction for them to be making eyes at each other and whatever else they got up to when no one was looking. It was dangerous and could cost both of their lives if they weren't careful. Aedion should know better, and so should Elora. She knew better than most that he took their safety very seriously.

He looked over at Ophelia once more and saw her with company, and relaxed when he saw it was Genevieve. She would take care of his wife so he felt more at peace. Any of the other ladies would have been gossiping and taking her around the court to show her off. But Genevieve knew better. He felt better with her there.

One more dance and then he would join her again for whatever she wished. One more dance with Elora and he was all hers. If she wished to dance more, he would spin her around the room until she was so dizzy she couldn't stand. And if she was ready to leave, well, he had a surprise waiting for her that would surely brighten her day. Or at least, he hoped it would. There was always a chance she would say no.

Genevieve smiled. "She truly is wonderful, is she not? I do hope to see you wear this gown, no matter hos scandalous it is for us women to wear the same outfits. It's too beautiful to be stored in the closet." She took another sip of her glass, her first glass of the night, mind you, and looked around the room.

"I suppose so. These events are so tedious, even if it is for your birthday. You do not need to pretend around me. I am not one to judge for hating these things. I detest them myself." She had spent enough of her youth twirling around the ballroom and flirting with men. Those days were past her and she was content. Content with her husband and content with her children.

@LolaBug

Ophelia's eyes brightened as she regards Genevieve. "Indeed, she is," she replies with genuine warmth. "Her craftsmanship is unparalleled, and I couldn't be more pleased with how this gown turned out. It's a work of art." She couldn't agree more with Genevieve's sentiment that such beauty should not be confined to a closet, even if it meant the occasional fashion faux pas of wearing the same outfit. The gown is even more special to her since Kaillas helped to create it just for her.

As Genevieve confesses her dislike for such grand events, she cant help but appreciate the honesty. "You have no idea how refreshing it is to hear someone speak the truth about these gatherings," she said with a soft chuckle. "It's not often that I can admit my own aversion to them without raising eyebrows. But, in truth, my husband's presence makes these occasions more bearable." Her gaze briefly flits to where Kaillas is. “Everyone worked so hard on putting this all together for me and I am grateful. However, I would have been just as happy with a small and private affair.”

"Still, they serve a purpose, I suppose," she continued. "Diplomacy and alliances are built in these rooms, even if it does come at the cost of enduring tiresome conversations and insincere flattery. At least we can find solace in the company of a few genuine souls, like yourself."

Unlike many of the women at court, she never had the chance to enjoy dancing and flirting with suitors at these events. She was kept on a short leash by her parents when they hosted or attends balls and now that she’s married, she has no desire to even look at another man.

@ElderGod-yellowqueen

Genevieve followed her line of sight to the king and smiled. She found her own husband hiding among the shadows. This was not his scene at all. He preferred to be the silent partner. Balls had always put him on edge, even when they were young. It was something she liked about him. She found solace and peace with him. And even though their relationship had been arranged, they had always been kind to one another. They had practically grown up at court together.

"You are the queen now, you will never have small and private affairs, no matter how much you crave them." It was the unfortunate fact of court. Everything was everyone's business. And something like the queen's birthday must be celebrated.

"I'm sure you and Kaillas have your presence known long enough for it to be accepted for you to slip away. Most people are too drunk to notice anyway. You won't be missed." Except, perhaps by her parents, but there was nothing good that would come out of them. And she and her husband could distract them long enough for the two of them to slip away unnoticed.

Genevieve hummed, clicking her ring against her glass. "I suppose you are right. Balls do have some benefits. It makes spying on others all that easier too. Alcohol makes the tongue loose and people say things they wouldn't usually. It's almost a nice distraction to look through people's things."

@LolaBug

Ophelia's gaze returns to Genevieve, and she cant help but nod in agreement. "You're absolutely right," she replies, her voice tinged with a hint of wistfulness. "As queen, privacy becomes a rare commodity, and even the most intimate moments are observed and dissected by others. But I suppose that's the price one must pay for the throne." She glances at Kaillas once more and then back to Genevieve. Their shared understanding of the complexities of court life is a comforting bond.

Although she is enjoying this conversation, she does hope to leave the ball soon. They have made their presence known and now with everyone being tipsy from the drinks, they can likely slip out without being noticed. She does hope that her parents will still be involved enough in a conversation to not notice for awhile. She needs to avoid them for the rest of the evening. Come tomorrow and they’ll be gone.

A sly smile curves her lips as Genevieve agrees with the benefits of gatherings like these. "Ah, the secrets and indiscretions that alcohol unveils," she muses, her tone conspiratorial. "It can be quite the tool for those who know how to wield it." She taps her fingers lightly on her wineglass, contemplating the hidden intrigues that lay beneath the surface of the glittering event.

@ElderGod-yellowqueen

"But I think it is a price worth paying," Genevieve turned towards Kaillas. There was no hiding their love for one another. It was passionate and unbreakable. There were worst things in life.

She gave Ophelia a knowing look. "As long as you know how to play your crowd, you can get whatever you want from them. You just have to be smart about it." And pick your targets wisely. Not everyone among them was would respond passively to inquiries. There were several known rowdy and violent drunks, and if you pushed too hard, well, you were exposed. Unless you knew how to play them right. Which she did, of course. She had been playing this game for a long time.

"If you ever have need of me, all you need to do is send for me." As the song came to an end, Genevieve made her exit. She curtsied to the queen, giving her a sly smile as Kaillas was making his way towards them. She inclined her head to the king before slipping away into the crowd.

Kaillas approached Ophelia, wrapped an arm around her waist and pulling her towards. "Are you alright, darling? I'm sorry I couldn't save you from your parents." Oh, he had wanted to, but it would have destroyed Katya's heart to leave her halfway through their dance.

@LolaBug

"I understand," Ophelia replies with a thoughtful nod, her gaze meeting Genevieve's. "It's all a delicate dance, isn't it? One must tread carefully and choose their steps wisely." She understands that playing the court's game is a necessary part of their roles, even if it sometimes felt disheartening. Genevieve's offer of assistance is something that she deeply appreciates. It's good to have friends and allies. She knows that having a confidante like Genevieve could be a tremendous asset in the intricate web of court politics. "Thank you, Genevieve," she says sincerely, her eyes conveying her gratitude.

As Genevieve makes her graceful exit, she watches her go. She knows that Genevieve is a force to be reckoned with in the court, and having her on her side is a reassuring thought.

Turning her head, she smiles as Kaillas approaches, wrapping an arm around her waist and pulling her close. His concern is evident in his eyes and she feels bad for making him worry. "I'm alright," she reassures him with a soft smile. "And you needn't apologize, darling. I understand you had your dance with your sister." She leans into his embrace, finding comfort in his presence.

"Is it alright if we leave? My parents are occupied and I'd like to slip out before they notice." They won't have many more chances to get away undetected once her parents end their conversation.

He dipped his head down to brush his lips across her temple. A ghost of a kiss, and all he would allow himself to do here, despite his previous kiss of passion. That was a one time thing in front of the court and not something he would likely do again. At least not any time soon. Being affectionate in public made him uncomfortable most times. But in cases such as this, when no one was looking at them, he could afford to give some to her.

"Still, I should have anticipated, intervened somehow." Something other than what he had done. Instead of sending someone to save her, there should have been someone with her from the start so her parents wouldn't have had a chance to start anything. A misstep on his part and one he didn't plan on making again.

"Of course, my darling. But so long as you aren't ready to end the night, I have something for you." And he prayed she didn't say no. It was now or never. If he didn't do it now, he would lose his nerve and never get to surprise her. There was no way in hell he would be able to do this again in the future. It was already set up and the question was given. If she wanted to retire, well, he could hide his disappointment.

It would be his own fault, of course, for not finding a more convenient time. Of all days, why did he have to choose the night her parents were here? But it was her birthday and he wanted to give her a gift she would never forget. What better opportunity than her birthday? He saw none other. This was the perfect time, even if her parents were an annoyance. But nothing could hinder him. Nothing unless she said no.

With a smile, she closes her eyes and enjoys the kiss being placed upon her temple. She understands his reservations about public displays of affection, especially in front of the court, but moments like these, when they were alone and unobserved, felt like treasures. This is one of the few times that she'll ever actually be thankful than people are drinking so heavily. It means that they aren't coherent enough to try and bother them.

"Oh hush. You deserve to have fun and it isn't as though I was in danger." She replies, understanding but slightly teasing to help lighten the mood. "I appreciate your concern, truly, but my parents have their own ways of asserting their wishes." She gives him a reassuring smile, her love for him unwavering. "You've already done more than enough for me tonight. Let's not dwell on it any longer." Besides, Kaillas may not have been the one to 'rescue' her but she knows for certain that he sent Ambrose to check in on her and that was plenty helpful.

Kaillas' words about having something for her piques her curiosity, and she looks up at him with an interested smile. There have been so many delightful surprises set up for her today, she can't believe that he's able to pull off another one. "Oh, really? I'm intrigued," she said playfully. The way he seems almost nervous about this surprise is something she finds sweet. It's obvious that he's put a lot of thought into whatever it is that he has planned.

"Tell me, my dear king," She says, her eyes sparkling with anticipation, "what is this surprise you have for me?" She can't imagine a better way to end her birthday celebration than with a special gift from the man she adores.

@ElderGod-yellowqueen

Kaillas agreed to disagree. Ophelia deserved to have just as much fun, if not more. It was her birthday after all. She should be enjoying herself, not worrying over what her parents might say to her or if they could find her in the crowd. And danger, perhaps not physically, but her mental well-being was at risk the longer she was in their presence. And his leash on his rage shortened every time he had to deal with them. He felt like he could have done so much more. He shouldn't have left her alone, not while her parents were on the loose. At the very least, he could have made sure one of the other ladies was with her while he danced. Or drove in the importance of Elora sticking with her when Kaillas was not there.

His hand squeezed her waist, giving her a teasing smile, and hiding just how nervous he truly was. "Now, it wouldn't be a surprise if I told you, now would it?" He quirked an eyebrow. There was nothing she could say or do that would make him spoil it.

He glanced around them, making sure no one was looking before taking her hand and tugging on it. "Come and I'll show you." And with the discretion of the guards and staff, he snuck them out of the ball, which wasn't all that hard considering the amount of alcohol that had been consumed by the partygoers. He couldn't blame them all too much, the politics of court made him want to drink sometimes too.

As he led her through the halls, his anxiety began rising. So much so that he couldn't even look at her for fear it would cripple him. Who knew doing such a thing would instill so much fear in him. He had faced countless warriors on the battlefield and come out victorious. He had stared death in the face and laughed at it. Yet surprising his girl? Well, it was unfathomable.

Kaillas led her out the doors to the courtyard and into the open yard where courtiers liked to frolic during the day. Only it wasn't so open. Rose petals had been scattered across the grass. An arch, made entirely of floral components, had been placed in the yard. The stars and moon were shining, providing a soft glow to the night and reflecting off the gown Ophelia wore. Evenings primrose formed a path to the arch, in full bloom under the night sky.

Kaillas let Ophelia walk in front of him. And when she finally turned around, he was on one knee.

Ophelia is genuinely touched by Kaillas's determination to make her birthday special despite the obstacles they face. His hand on her waist brings reassurance, and she can't help but smile at his teasing. Despite her parents trying their best to ruin this day for her, she’s actually had a good time. All of these sweet little surprises have made today the best birthday that she’s ever had.

"Alright, you've got me curious," she responds, her eyes sparkling with anticipation. She has complete trust in Kaillas, knowing that whatever surprise he has in store will be worth it. Everything he’s done today has been nothing short of magical after all.

As he tugs on her hand, they slip away from the bustling ballroom, and she feels a sense of adventure. She appreciates how Kaillas has orchestrated their escape with the help of the inebriated partygoers and the discretion of the staff. It’s always nice to be able to sneak away from these types of events.

Walking through the dimly lit halls, she can't resist stealing glances at Kaillas. His anxiety is palpable, and she finds this vulnerable side of him endearing. She wants to say something reassuring but also doesn't want to spoil the moment. It’s clear that he’s put a lot of time and effort into whatever this is.

When they step into the courtyard, her breath catches in her throat. The scene before her is nothing short of magical. The scattered rose petals, the floral arch, and the soft moonlight create an enchanting atmosphere. She feels like she has stepped into a dream.

As Kaillas leads her toward the arch, her heart swells with emotion. She can't believe the effort he has put into this. And when he goes down on one knee, her eyes fill with tears of joy. “Kaillas….." she whispers, her voice trembling with emotion, realizing what he’s doing.

(Omg this is like the sweetest shit ever lol)
