Phoenix decided to stray off of the pier and go closer to the bay. It wasn't the smartest decision he ever made, given that the rocks of the shoreline were slippery, not to mention that a monster much worse than a siren lurked somewhere close by, but he chose to do it anyway.
Water splashed his legs teasingly as he walked up to the shore. His eyes scanned the murky sea for signs of danger, but the waves were silent.
Or at least, they were until he saw a pair of enchanting, sea blue eyes staring at him from beneath the dark waters. Phoenix immediately tensed up, going for his dagger.Leave, the siren hissed, it's voice etheral and mesmerizing. Phoenix's mind started to become cloudy, as it normally did when a siren spoke to him. Luckily, the trick to escaping the trance was to think of something you hated, or feared; the opposite of what a siren's voice tempted you with. The disembowled body of the man flashed in his head and the fog trapping his mind immediately cleared.
"Why?" He asked it, his voice low and raspy from disuse. "You're the one who's been terroizing this town." Another idiotic move on his part; engaging in conversation with the monster you were sent to hunt was never a good idea.
Not me, it replied, not unnevered by the fact he could resist its voice, much to Phoenix's surprise. Something else. Evil.
"Like what?" He questioned, intrigued despite his instincts screaming at him to run.
Evil, it repeated. Ancient and powerful. Not safe, even for sirens.
"Okay, but why tell me?" Phoenix demanded, getting slightly annoyed by how vague the creature was being. "Your kind hates people like me."
Yes, but we hate this one more, the siren hissed, revealing its alluring head above the water, narrowing its eyes at him. You're a monster hunter, are you not?
"I am," he responded, wondering if maybe the siren was affecting him after all. He was going to get himself killed if he kept talking to it.
Then kill this one! it ordered. It's presence makes me unable to hunt; I'm starving.
Phoenix was about to say something else but it vanished beneath the waves, effectively ending the conversation.
He frowned. Sirens normally didn't give out warnings. Maybe it was messing around with him, to catch him off guard so it could lure poor unsuspecting victims into its domain.
But then again, it didn't kill him…
Phoenix shook his head. The water was making his thoughts go all over the place. He made his way back to the pier, doing his best to forget what the siren told him.
Elle waited for the girl to speak. But she didn’t say anything, a fit of embarrassment washing over her. “Lizzie, talk. Your constant biting of the tongue never helps you, it will be bitten out of your mouth some day and then you’ll be a freak. Like me.” he said.
She spoke. “Someone tried to kill me. I don’t know who and I wouldn’t tell you if I did. But I can’t stay here. Please, Elle, take me with you. I know you’ve been aching to leave, you never stick around.” she said, and there was a desperate look in her eyes that brought out some level of disgust in Elle. Pitiable figures never helped their cases when they did that.
