(sorry i took so long to reply, i fell asleep)
Penny had a good feeling about today. She had gotten all of her necessary gear together in her favorite blue backpack, ready to seize the day. She set her camera carefully on her passenger seat as she turned on her jeep and drove to the beach. It wasn’t far from her current lab, but she wanted to be there as soon as possible. As soon as she arrived, she turned off the car and slung the backpack over her shoulders. She placed the camera around her neck with a grin.
The day was perfect; clear sky, warm but not sweltering heat. She had already put on plenty of sunscreen, because she knew if she didn’t her complexion would match a lobster’s. She smiled to herself, excited as she locked her jeep and put the keys in her pocket. She walked onto the sand, feeling the grainy texture under her sneakers.
As quietly and carefully as she could, she started down the beach, scanning the sand for sea turtles or their nests. She made extra sure not to step on any animals, so she moved slowly. Penny was glad that she had put her hair up in a messy bun, otherwise it would have been soaking up heat in a sweaty mess on her back. She clutched her camera, waiting for something interesting. But no sea turtles. Yet.
Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed something that had previously been too far away for her to really see. It looked like a beached dolphin or something, though it was still a good distance away. It was hard to tell for sure. But it appeared to be bleeding. Penny’s eyes widened as she turned towards the creature, studying it. The sea turtles could wait.
She hurried across the sand (well, as much as she could with the camera and her careful way of not stepping on anything). As she got closer, the creature looked less like a beached dolphin and more like a human girl playing dress up. That was not something that Penny saw every day. Once she was close to the creature, it looked—inexplicably—like a mermaid. But those didn’t exist…
Penny stared for a moment before she noticed that the girl—whatever she was—was bleeding. A lot. She looked very much not okay. Penny knew that she had to do something. “Oh my god,” she exclaimed. “Are you okay? Do you need help? Can you hear me?” She bit her lip to stop herself from asking even more questions. She was probably freaking the girl out already, if she was even awake.
