Devon nodded slowly, letting out a breath she didn’t know she had been holding. “Okay… Thank you. This means a lot to me,” she said softly, red dusting her cheeks as she turned back to the counter to call an attendant over.

“It’s no problem,” he replied softly, feeling something tug at his heart. “No problem at all.”

“I’ll pay you back for it. I promise,” Devon said, turning to look at him as the necklace was packed up.

Sebastian shook his head quickly, drawing his wallet from the back pocket of his black jeans. “Don’t even think about it.”

Devon blinked at him and shook her head. “No, I want to pay you back,” she insisted as she made her way over to the cash register to pay.

“Honestly, it’s fine,” he pressed, following after.

“But… It’s a lot of money,” Devon said, glancing over at him as the cashier rang up the necklace.

“It’s fine.” Sebastian inserted his credit card, face carefully passive. “Don’t worry, ‘kay?”

"Sebastian… Please. At least let me do something for you. I can't just let you do this for nothing," Devon insisted, chewing on her lip harder.

“You don’t need to owe me anything,” he persisted gently. “It’s fine.”

Devon stared at the little box in her hand, her mind going a million places at once. How could he do this for her? Why would he do it for her? She saw no reasonable explanation, and it confused her immensely.

“Okay…” she finally relented in a whisper. “If you’re absolutely sure…”

His eyes darted away as he replaced his wallet in his back pocket, swallowing. “I’m sure. Give me a second, I’ll be right back.” He slipped between two jewelry stands, wishing he had more time to browse for her.

Devon shook her head slowly, confused and intrigued at the same time. There was no reason for him to do this for her. They were friends, yes, but that didn’t mean he had to help her pay for something so expensive…

Maybe she should get him another gift. She’d already gotten him one, but it was just something small and not that big of a deal. It wasn’t even what she had really wanted to get him, but she had been saving money for the necklace… Now that she didn’t have to, she could get it for him.

Too expensive… It was all too expensive. Prices ranging anywhere from the 300s all the way up the the thousands, prices he would never be able to cover, even if he hadn’t just paid for the necklace. Maybe I should just get her something else…. Sebastian sighed in frustration.

That’s when his eyes caught on a piece in the corner, a necklace with a big, red ‘for sale’ tag on it. He approached quickly, bending down to inspect it.

But getting his gift would mean he couldn’t be with her when she bought it, even if he didn’t know it was for him. She wanted it to be a complete surprise. It would just be more fun that way. But… How was she supposed to get it without him?

It was silver, made of multiple slim chains that hung down and criss-crossed in an elegant manner, dotted with tiny silver beads. And, glory hallelujah, it was on sale for half the price. Yes, it was still $80, but it was the best he was going to get, not to mention a necklace that he was positive Devon would like. It's fine.. he told himself. Just don't eat for the next two or so days or pay for any food. The only thing left to do was to buy it without Devon noticing.

Devon sighed and glanced over at Sebastian, then outside. “Hey, Sebastian? I’m just going to head across the street quick. There was something I needed to grab. I’ll meet you back here in a few minutes, okay?” she said, turning her attention back to her friend.

(about what part? the necklace? or the eating?)

"Yeah sure, go ahead," he called over his shoulder with a smile, careful to position his body so that she couldn't see the necklace.

(She’d cry about the necklace and literally bring him food herself, even if she had to go it in secret. Or she’d just invite him over for basically every meal…)

Devon nodded and smiled back before slipping out the door. Well, that was easy…

As soon as she was gone, Sebastian called for someone to package the necklace, paying as quickly as he could and hiding the precious parcel in his wallet.

(Oh my gosh!!! Yesyesyes!)

A few minutes later, Devon walked back into the jewelry store. The gift for Sebastian was sagely tucked away in one of the other bags so that he wouldn’t see where it was from.

“You ready?” she asked, making her way over to him.

"Yep." He smiled warmly, ignoring the flutter in his stomach. "Where to next?"

“There are a couple more stores. They’re not far from here,” Devon explained with a smile.
