((It's okay, just take your time))
Diana sat down on the edge of her desk, rubbing her eyes before grabbing what looked like a wickedly sharp knife and strapping it to her side. If they were nearing a ship, she had to be ready to fight. Because there was no way she was allowing her crew to loose.
She turned back to her messy desk once the knife was set at her side, pushing through papers and items before spotting a golden chain, a single golden locket laced on the end. It was the only valuable item she cherished, and that much was clear with the care she used to put it on, tucking it into her shirt. Only then she stood, grunting as she grabbed her hat and shoved it back on her head with her hair tucked up inside.
With that, she walked out, forcing away any thoughts besides the thought of the fight that was sure to ensue. She didn't have time to dwell over memories associated with her necklace, or with talking to the crew more than barking out orders. Diana made her trip to the wheel of the ship quick, nodding in praise at her first mate's decision to follow the ship.
"Adjust the sails, we'll need to pick up speed to get close to them," She ordered, pointing to a crewmate that stood by nervously, "And make sure the rest of the crew is readying the weapons as well as the planks. We'll be boarding them if possible. As well as taking any of their supplies that we can."
Aisling began to steer her ship away in the opposite direction, trying to get away from the other ship. Her crew began to unfurl the sails, trying to pick up speed and get away, but she soon realized that they were being chased by the other boat. Oh gods… She thought as she tried to get her ship to speed up, Come on, come on, come on, you need to speed up. She thought as she moved for her first mate to take over the wheel as she moved to begin commanding the crew and have them prepare to fight. After most of the men were ready, she raced down with a few others to the lower deck so they could hide the supplies and valuables.
Once things were hidden in secret areas of the ship, she hurried upward back onto the main deck. She had a pistol sheathed into her belt as he moved back to the main deck, making sure that the crew members were ready to fight, and had something to protect themselves with.
The anticipation of a fight was almost visible in the air as the crew followed Diana's barking of orders. Before long the ship was secure, items were stashed in places they wouldn't be found, weapons were prepped, and almost all of their supplies were securely stashed as far back in the ship as they could get. At least then it would take them a while to get there.
Diana had helped tuck things away, but for the most part she stayed up at the ship's wheel, letting her first mate steer but watching over the entirety of the ship. Even she was almost excited in a sense to even just meet up with another ship. No matter if it was because they were going to raid the ship or not. It was still another ship.
She couldn't help but smile as the ships drew closer together, the wind billowing through both of their sails.
Slipping away from the wheel, she took a quick minute to walk back to her cabin, pulling her favorite sword out of its hiding space as well as one of her pistols. At least if her pistol ran out she would have a backup weapon then. Now all they had to do was wait.
Aisling watched as the other ship began to gain on them, it was no use, they would more than likely be boarded. Which was the last thing that the woman needed. As she watched the ship make the seemingly final bounds until they were nearly side by side, she just sighed. Should I let them fight? She knew that some of her crew wanted to, but none were ready to at the moment. Having spent a couple of weeks here and there at different ports had made them a bit more sluggish than before, and to be quite honest rather out of shape. It wouldn't be wise at all, no matter who the other crew is. If and when the other crew boards, I'll have them drop their weapons.
When she heard the other ship fire a volley at them, she motioned for the sails to be closed. Let's just get this over and done with, let them take whatever they can find, and leave us alone. She thought as the other ship came closer to them. Soon though, they were boarded by the other crew, and nervously, she watched as the other crew board them.
(Nooo my response didn't go through again? ;-; Imma go cry right after I get a response up D: I'm really sorry)
Diana watched as the ships neared each other and finally they were able to board, a good number of her crew swinging to the other ship without hesitation. She kept her face calm as she called out for the sails to be closed and handed off control of the ship to her first mate before walking towards the edge of her ship calmly. Fighting was a time she had to be careful about revealing her identity. And so she tended to go in a little later than the rest of her crew, just to lessen the risk of something like her hat flying off give away her gender.
She did still board though, and after a plank was lined between the ships, she walked over smoothly, almost surprised about the lack of fighting. Or at least by what looked like reluctance to fight. Davina pulled her sword out of its scabbard as she stepped onto the other ship, a tiny grin playing on her face as she looked around for whoever had to be captain of this hunk of floating wood.
As the others boarded, Benji hurried to Aisling's side, the cabin boy was just so terrified. She just took his hand, squeezing his hand gently. "Everything will be alright, dear, I promise." She whispered to him as she watched the others board. But she was terrified, she didn't want to leave her crew, and especially not Benji. This child was practically her son, and well, she couldn't do that to him, she couldn't let that happen to him.
But when she saw the captain enter the ship, she looked down as her crew all turned to look at her. Great, just great. She thought, looking down and away from the other crew.
Following the eyes of the opposing crewmembers, Diana spotted who she assumed was the captain. Much to her surprise though, it was clearly a woman. And unlike herself, she wasn't disguised. This was strange.
Her reaction didn't cross her face though, just the same tiny grin as she walked towards her, calling up, "Do you happen to be the captain of this hunk of wood?" Something in the back of her mind almost wished that it wasn't the captain, mostly because she was already jealous of her ability to control a crew without having to look like a man. The rest of her mind hoped otherwise though. Mostly because the faster she got the captain to surrender, the faster they could raid the ship, do some damage, and leave.
Diana rested her hand on her gun as she walked, a cautious hand settled on even when she stopped. Incase she needed to use the gun quickly.
Aisling heard the other captain call to her, and she glanced around, just making sure that she was who was being referred to. When she was sure that it was in fact her, she sighed, taking a deep breath before speaking. "Well, yes sort of? I'm the quartermaster, but well, I've been doing the duties of the captain for a while now?" She heard a few grumbles from the crew when they heard her say that, before her first mate nudged her to continue to speak. "So I believe so?" She said, squeezing the shoulder of Benji as he looked up at her with fear-filled eyes.
She tried to just smile down at him before letting him go and walking towards the captain, her long curls bouncing a bit as she walked. When she stopped in front of the other woman, she slowly began to drop her weapons, motioning for the rest of her crew to do the same. "I have no plans on fighting against you, you may take what you would like, but please, do no more than that."
"Well, quartermaster," Diana started as the woman stopped in front of her, watching calmly as weapons were dropped, "I would advise you not to tell me what I can and cannot do. We'll accept your invitation to take what we want…" She trailed off for a moment, taking a step away and looking around with a grin before her eyes focused on the boy that she had been standing by before. All she did was point at him, and calmly added, "We're taking him as well."
Expecting protest, she simply turned and started to stroll around the ship, hoping that the confidence she was looking for was visible to everyone else. She was itching to fight, but this was a much better alternative. Now it was time to see what this woman would give up for her crew.
"Before you say anything, he does fall under the umbrella of 'take anything you'd like."
When Aisling heard that, her hand moved instinctively to her gun's holster, but she had dropped her weapon and was now regretting it. Benjamin just stood in shock, so scared and wanting nothing more for this to be over and for that captain to be gone.
After just staring at the woman in shock, she eventually found her voice. "He is a child, y-you…" She faltered unsure of what she could say, or even do to help him, but she would try to help. "That's my son, y-you wouldn't take a child from his mother, now would you?" She said her voice shaking a bit more as she spoke, "You can take anything else, but please non of my crew… O-or." She glanced over at her first mate, a sad smile on her face, "Take our cargo, or, if you'd want to take any of my crew, t-take me."
Benji let out a whimper when he heard that, letting a tear fall from his eyes.
"Normally I wouldn't even consider taking a child aboard, but I figured it was a good way to enforce the warning of not telling me what to do," Diana replied, pulling her gun out of its holster and simply studying it as she stopped in front of the woman again, "Now I'm curious though. You would switch places with the boy? Correct me if I'm wrong, but is that not the same as taking a mother from her son? What's the difference between taking him or you?"
She looked calmly at the other woman, calling out to her crew quickly, "Find their cargo and food, take what we need." The crew set to work with the order, taking the other crew's weapons before a fight would break out. Then they set to work, several staying on the deck of the ship with Diana.
"I trust my crew, they will take care of him, but I will not know what will happen to him if he goes with you. I would not be sure that he was safe and protected." Now she was regretting even mentioning the fact that she would be willing to go, and the fact that they had stopped. If only we had tried to outrun them, none of this would be happening.
As the captain began to call out orders to their crew, Aisling's crew began to step back, watching the interaction between Aisling and the other. Her first mate Kasper made his way over to Benjamin, trying to console him, "It'll be alright," he said quietly, trying to comfort him.
"If you'd like to make sure that he is in no harm, you're free to join him, quartermaster." She motioned to her ship with a tiny smirk, "I've made up my mind, he's leaving with us. Either say your goodbyes to him or to your crew."
Diana was well aware of how cruel the choice was, but at the moment, she didn't care. She wanted to swipe supplies, cause chaos, and see how another female captain would do under pressure. To even come across another woman out on the ocean that was in a position of power was rare, a captain especially, and to see them not disguised.
She drummed her fingers against her gun, waiting with a calm smirk, "I don't have forever to wait, choose quickly quartermaster."
"Y-you, you…" She trailed off before turning around to face her crew. This crew was her family, they had been there for her when she had first run away from her family. Or course there had been new additions here and there, but they were a family, and they protected each other. Stepping towards Kasper she gave him a hug, "Take care of the crew, and keep them safe, I'll come back soon."
She took Benjamin's hand in her own and then walked towards the other captain. "I'll go, but you aren't to hurt either of us, at all." She said with a growl as if giving the other captain a warning. Although she would be leaving her ship, she would not be giving up her will, and she would not let herself or Benjamin be treated terribly.
Diana rolled her eyes, watching the pair near her, "If you give me no reason to harm you, you won't be harmed." She waved goodbye sarcastically to the other crew, then motioned towards her ship, "After you, miss quartermaster."
The rest of her crew was making trips between the two ships still, but one by one they made their way back. All gave the newcomers a glare, but Diana stood by them, daring them to do something. "Wave bye," She said, a tiny smirk on her face, "Now, onto business. What are your names?" Diana looked up at her first mate, who still stood at the wheel, motioning for him to bark out orders to get moving.
Aisling tried to smile down at the child, before the two walked across the gangplank onto the other ship. He looked up at her, "Will everything be alright?" She nodded a little, before glancing back towards her ship. I will come back. She resolved before turning to face the captain.
"My name is Aisling, and this is Benjamin," Aisling said with a sigh, looking up at the captain. "So, what are we to do here? Are we to work for your crew, our will you just get rid of us the first chance you get, hhm?"
"I haven't quite decided yet," Diana replied, turning to look at her first mate before waving him down, "Now. For starters, Benjamin, you are going to stay by my first mate, Jack, for the remainder of the day. Leave his side and I'll personally see to you being locked in the brig."
Jack had walked calmly to Diana's side as she spoke, nodding in greeting to the boy. He didn't look menacing, he was more lean and tall than anything, and could pass as her brother at a moment's glance.
"As for you, miss Aisling, I would like to speak with you," Diana continued, facing the woman again, "And you will be given your own task, or tossed off the side of the ship. Still haven't decided on that either." She shrugged, then motioned to her cabin, waiting for any of them to move.
Benjamin sized up the man, studying him a little bit. He seems friendly enough? The boy thought before following the man away from Aisling and the captain. The boy wasn't really paying attention to what the last bit was, but just figured that it wouldn't be wise to leave the other man. As he watched the other man set the course of the ship and begin to steer it, Benji sat on the crate he had been given, just wondering what would happen to Aisling. She wouldn't be taken along with me to just be killed? Well, she could, but that's not right. Although Aisling led a crew of lawless pirates, she tried to have some things the crew just never did. They normally never took prisoners or anything of the sort and normally avoided conflict as much as possible -well except for pillaging- to avoid bloodshed.
Aisling shuddered a little bit at the latter option, this part of the sea was infested with sharks, and she wasn't about to take her chances with them. As she walked to the cabin she warily waved goodbye to Benjamin before the door closed behind her. As she silently waited for the captain to speak, Aisling glanced around the room taking in her surroundings.
The cabin was clearly well lived in but also well taken care of. A small bunk was set against the wall, with what looked like a handmade blanket folded on top of it. Other than that, there was a chest with several shirts and pairs of pants half hanging out, and a desk and chair right in the center of the room. It was the only part of the room that was horribly messy. Papers, trinkets, various jewelry, and coins, maps; all were scattered over the surface.
Diana stopped as she reached the desk in the cabin, pausing quickly to lock the door before making her way back to the desk. She was silent, studying Aisling's face with a calculating gaze before finally speaking, "How do you get an entire crew to listen to you as a woman?"
Jack on the other hand stayed completely silent as he focused on the task at hand, tapping out a beat against the well-worn wood with his fingers. He didn't care that Benjamin was with him, didn't bother looking his way, or even checking if he was still on the box. Diana would take care of the kid if he decided to wander around. That wasn't his place.
"Well, they respected me as the quartermaster, so why would captain be any different?" Aisling said with a shrug before continuing, "When I first became quartermaster the men didn't really respect them, in fact, quite a few tried to well…" She chuckled a little bit, "I fixed that issue rather quickly. I showed that I could defend myself from them and that they had to respect me and my position. Although that did take quite a bit of time. I got into a couple of fights winning them and putting the other in their place, but well that isn't the main reason they listen to me. Although I was able to show them early on that I could easily protect myself from them they respected me for my decisions and the way I handled things. If one of our men was caught we wouldn't leave them behind as others would, we would always get them back, and well we became like a family in a sense. Then when our captain was killed, they decided to have me fill the position of captain, because they trusted me and would keep them safe." She sighed quietly before continuing, "I can only hope that I did."
Benjamin was still there though, just looking around growing rather bored. The boy hated sitting still, but he didn't want to go down to the brig, he still had bad memories about the brig from the ship before Aisling's and well, he never wanted to be in one again. But soon he turned attention back to Jack, trying to find something about the man that piqued his interest. He looks a lot like Kaspar, and a little like Garien, and they were nice, so maybe he is too? After a few more moments of silence, he quietly asked, "How long have you been the first mate here?" He was hoping to maybe strike up a conversation, or just something to get rid of the silence.
"But as a woman? They put their trust in you?" Diana tugged her hat off and her hair fell back down to it's original length, hopefully revealing that she wasn't male, "How did you get to the position of quartermaster?" She leaned back on the desk, eventually turning and grabbing one of the many handmade trinkets to mess with, "Were you given the position or did you work your way there? My crew would mutiny if they knew they were following a female captain."
Jack finally looked at Benjamin, taking his focus off the wheel. The kid looked bored as anything, that much was clear to him. His face didn't give away any emotion as he stepped away from the wheel, walking to a nearby pile of rope and picking it up into his arms. Unceremoniously, he dumped it next to Benjamin, pointing to the clear knots and tangles in it. Hopefully that would give him something to do as Jack turned back to steering.
"Yes, as a woman, and yes they put their trust in me." Aisling said with a shrug as if it wasn't too hard to believe. She studied the other person, a semi-confused look on her face that the captain was a woman, but she just continued to speak. "Well, when I had run away and had bought passage on a ship, the ship was raided and I ended up a prisoner on my ship. Then from there, I became a part of the crew, rising up in the ranks until I reached the position of the quartermaster." She shrugged once more, unsure of how to explain it. "And well, since they knew that I was a woman from the beginning, they respected my choices and decisions." She shrugged a little bit unsure if she could describe anything more.
Benjamin just grumbled a little bit, before taking the rope in his hands and began to untangle it. I guess he doesn't want to talk at all. He thought with a sigh, working on the first major knot. He was a bit of a talker and loved to have a good conversation with anyone, but it seemed like this man wasn't the friendliest. As he began to work through the long rope, he quietly hummed, just wanting to do something to at least break and the silence and make the time go by quicker for him.
Diana nodded, listening, and taking notes even if she didn't seem like it. "Well then, thank you for your words," She said calmly, setting the trinket back down as she stood up and motioned to the door, "I'll pair you with a crew member and maybe you can rub a few brains into their skulls, hopefully about your whole 'female captain' thing." That was all Diana wanted anyway, and she took her time shoving her hat back on her head, tucking any stray hair up inside so she didn't reveal herself to her crew. Her words were calm, no hint of feeling in any of them, "You won't be tossed overboard right now, but speak a word of who I am to anyone and I can assure you that little Benjamin will be the one paying the consequences."
