The next day, more like afternoon, Derik walks into the building looking tired. He trudges to the daycare and puts on his smile before walking in. “Hey guys.”

"…you aren't Mason.." Asani whispered.

Derik nods. “I’m a friend of Mason’s. He wanted me to tell you that he can’t be here today. I’m taking over his shift.”

Derik nods. “yeah he’s fine. He’s just very tired and the hospital wanted him to stay there for a bit.”

Derik smiles, “Well Mason wanted me to do sticker making with the kids. And then we’re gonna do a movie, then nap time and after that arts and crafts. Um…” he checks his phone, “Puppets.”

"Puppets? are we making them?" Asani asked, pausing from where she had been walking.

Derik nods, “Yup. Ima go dig in the supply closet and see if he left that box like he said.”

Derik smiles and waves at Benny. “Hey. Mason wanted me to tell you he misses you.”

Derik pauses, “In about three days to a week. Most likely a week.” He walks to the supply closet and pulls out a giant box.

Derik sets the box on the table, humming softly. He honestly looked like a much older version of Mason with blackish brown hair and blue eyes. He had a decent amount of stubble and a scar on the corner of his mouth. He looks at Benny and smiles. Derik was tired looking. Just like Mason. Though he seemed tired from just being old.
