Violeta

The dreams have gotten worse since I came here.

College—-after the awful hellscape that was high school, it was supposed to be paradise. And in some ways, it is. No one gives a crap about how weird you are, everyone is going through a period of transition. People are infinitely less judgemental. Class, however difficult to keep up with, is amazing.

But from the moment I curl up in my new bed… the sunshiny heaven that was college campus melts away into a nocturnal land of nightmares. Ghosts haunt my dreams every night without fail, people who I’ve never met in my life. It’s always been bad, but now…. I wake up with a new mark everyday. A bruise, a cut, a scar. One time, I woke up with my left arm covered in horrible burns. It’s as if something about the campus has amplified my dream-sense (which was already too strong for my own good). Either that, or hundreds of people have died on these grounds.

My mom wants me to go to therapy, but it’s not like we can afford it. Curfew is as strict as always, so it’s not like I can stay up all night. I just have to endure it until someone comes up with a miracle cure..

Love, Violeta

I sighed, lifting my finger from the mousepad. What’s the point of writing these? It’s not like he’ll ever read them… And there wasn’t a point. It was just a stupid, useless coping mechanism. He would never visit my dreams, because my usual visitors were violent monsters who I’d never heard of in my life. Furthermore, the dead aren’t able to see (or in my case, read) whatever you fell asleep holding. It was idiotic, weak, and hopeless.

Exhaling a breath of frustration, I let my fingers skim the laptop keys, highlighting the letter I had just written. Before I could stop and think, I was forcing my index finger to move forward and press the backspace button.

Click.

Twenty minutes of thoughtful writing deleted.

Before I could cave in and select undo, I slammed the top of the laptop down and tossed it onto my bed. It was nearly four in the afternoon, and I still wasn’t ready for the party. Considering the fact that curfew was at 8:00 on the dot, I wouldn’t have much time to actually have fun before it was time to return to the dorm if I didn’t get off my butt and get moving.

“Are you going to the party?” I called over my shoulder as I reached for my dresser, directing the question to my roommate. “Or do I have to forcefully drag you there?”

Theo

I generally enjoyed andrew (Our Supreme Lord and Overseer)’s parties. They had a surprising lack of alcohol (for a college party, that is), a shit ton of delicious baked goods, and every type of pizza I could possibly imagine. But tonight, I wasn’t really looking forward to it. I had a project due too soon for my comfort, a sick roommate, and a nightmarish lack of chocolate croissants at the moment. But alas…. I’d already promised my cousin that I would be there.

After the horror show that had been Violeta’s high school experience, she was determined to have fun. Unfortunately, her definition of ‘fun’ included trying to hook me up with every single hot guy we came across. Not that I was complaining…. her ‘gaydar’, as she called it, was pretty damn strong, and most of the guys were sweet as hell. Normally, it was fun, even if nothing had quite worked out so far. But andrew (Our Supreme Lord and Overseer)’s party meant more cute guys. And, strangely, I wasn’t in the mood to be an awkward, blushing mess today.

Heaving a long sigh, I peered at my reflection in the bathroom mirror. My hair was a fluffy mess, as usual, but there was no point trying to fix it. I hated gel with a seething passion, so the only option was to comb it a little and hope it didn’t look too ridiculous. As my fashion-smart cousin had advised, I wore a simple, short-sleeved button-down tucked loosely into a pair of dark jeans. Casual, but slightly classy. My ridiculous, dorky glasses remained in place, but all in all… I didn’t look so bad.

“I’m going out!” I called over my shoulder, pushing open the bathroom door and making straight for my coat. My roommate merely groaned and covered his head with a blanket. Ensuring that his medication was on the counter, where he could see it, I slipped a light jacket over my shoulders and stepped into the hallway.

Arwen

“For the last time, Ophelia, I’m not going!”

I stood in the middle of our small kitchenette, arms crossed. “Come on, you know how much I hate parties…”

But my roommate refused to relent. Waving a Nutella-covered spatula at me, she shook her head. “Arwen, I love you, but you need to get out a little. It’s November, for Christ’s sake, and you haven’t been to a single party!”

“I’m not in the mood to navigate past a stampede of wasted college students,” I answered dryly. “I’m not going, end of story.” Leaning forward, I reached for the eggless cookie dough Ophelia was preparing, aiming to scoop a dollop onto my finger, but she slid the bowl away.

“Oh, no.” Narrowing her dark eyes, she shook her head. “Come with me and socialize tonight, and I’ll let you have the cookie dough. Besides, it’s andrew (Our Supreme Lord and Overseer)’s party, and his parties never have a lot of alcohol or weed, or whatever.”

I threw my hands into the air. “You can’t just hold the cookie dough hostage!”

“Can too. Do you know what socialization is, Arwen? As in, talking to people other than your viola?”

I huffed, turning away. “Fine. Fine. I’ll go, but only for an hour. And only because you’re keeping Nutella cookie dough away from me.”

“Yessssss…” My roommate pumped her fists. “Awesome. Now, go put something nice on. No more preppy clothes! Wear a skirt that isn’t pleated, for once in your life!”

I held a rainbow of different colored eyeliners in my hands, ten in all, trying to decide between them. I knew I wanted to do two different ones, but which two was the question. My roommate sat at her desk staring at her computer. By the time she slammed it closed, I had chosen pink and blue and was in the process of carefully drawing a pink line across my left eyelid. “Are you going to the party? Or do I have to forcefully drag you there?” she asked.

"No, no. I'll come, I'll come," I muttered in intense focus. I paused and looked up. Violeta looked tired, like something weighed on her, as she looked through her dresser. I didn't want to overstep my boundary, but I had heard Violeta's feverish muttering in her sleep, and it was hard to miss the different marks that appeared on her skin the next morning. I hadn't known her very long, but she was incredibly nice and it was hard not to worry about her. "Are you up for it though?" I asked carefully, starting to draw a blue line across my other eyelid.

Abner

I buttoned my black jeans and pulled a t-shirt over my head. I rubbed my towel over my wet hair and fluffed my curls, arranging them on my head. I checked my watch as I put it on my wrist. Shit, I was going to be late. Sure enough, someone pounded on my door. "Hey Abner, you done grooming yourself yet? We gotta go, man."

"Keep your shirt on, Alex, I'm coming right now," I yelled through the door, pulling on my bomber jacket. I walked into our bedroom, where my roommate stood, impatiently tapping his foot. Grabbing my guitar from where it was propped up against the wall, I put it in its case and snapped the case shut. "Ready," I said, snapping the case shut. "Happy?"

"I would have been happier ten minutes ago, but it'll do." My roommate grabbed his keys. "Let's go."

I followed him out, texting Violeta as I went. She and Alex had both told me about the party, but I'd just figured I'd make sure one other person I knew was definitely going to be there. 'You're coming, right?," I texted, blindly following my roommate across campus. God, this party had better be worth it.

@blue_topaz

Violeta

My phone buzzed in my back pocket just as Jamie spoke, drawing a sigh from my lips. "Of course I am," I answered, forcing a painfully large smile onto my face as I slid my phone into my hand. "Why wouldn't I be?"

The text was from none other than Abner, one of my oldest friends, and I hastened to reply.

Of course, lol. I'm bored af over here. I'm assuming that you're referring to the party?

Yes, I was exhausted out of my mind. Yes, I was frustrated and in pain from the gash that ran down my thigh. But I needed to go to this party, to retain a sense of normalcy more than anything else. If I had some fun, maybe I would feel a bit better. And besides, andrew (Our Supreme Lord and Overseer) always made the best brownies….

@Moxie group

Jamie

Oh, she was denying it. I started to mentally backpedal. My worrying kicked into overdrive as I put highlighter on my cheekbones. Maybe she had already talked to other people about her dreams and she was sick of it and it hurt her to talk about them. Maybe we weren't close enough to talk about this. We had only known each other for a few months. Of course she wouldn't want to talk about it with you Jamie. "Uh, nothing. No reason in particular. I was just . . . checking on you. Generally." I looked down at the makeup in my hands. "Do you have makeup on? Do you want me to do something for you real quick? Or do we not have time?"

Abner

I looked down at my phone when my phone buzzed, seeing that Violeta had replied to my text.

Yeah duh
What'd you think I meant?

"Man, why'd you even bring your guitar? You think you're gonna get girls with it or something?" Alex asked, disbelief in his voice.

I chuckled. "Just wait until you hear me play," I said grinning. "Then you'll know why I brought my guitar."

@blue_topaz

Violeta

My eyes flicked from the dresser to her nervous expression, and I sighed. Even after a mere two months of rooming with her, I knew how easily she could worry. So, though it pained me to expose such a weakness, I let the smile slip from my face. "Sorry, I probably sounded abrupt," I apologized quietly, sliding the top dresser drawer open in order to find something appropriate to wear. "I'm… tired. And makeup would be really nice, if you're okay with that.

My phone buzzed again, so I took it out once more.

idk lol. maybe you were going to a secret orgy, i'd never know

@Euric_Knight

Sawyer

I peered in the mirror, carefully drawing a black line around my eye. It wasn't winged, it just made my eyes look darker. I could hear Rowan scoff behind me.

"Shut up," I muttered. "I don't give you flack for your appearance."

I could see him roll his eyes in the mirror. "You bother me about buying expensive clothes every single day, Sawyer."

I raised an eyebrow. "What need does a college student have for Gucci?"

"I need to look good at parties," He responded, tapping his foot impatiently. "Such as the party we are about to be late for, Sawyer."

"Meh muh meh muh meh meh," I mimed. I finished with the eyeliner and pulled on my zip-up hoodie, ignoring Rowan's subsequent eye roll.

I suppose we should try to be on time. I think Violeta's going to be there. I haven't talked to her in forever, I thought. Maybe I could make some new friends, seeing as all of my current ones are shit. My eyes drifted to Rowan as we left the dorm and I followed him to the party.

Ellam

I walked to the party swinging two grocery bags at my sides. Both bags only held capri suns, which for some reason all of my friends were addicted to, so I thought that it was the best item to bring to a party that many of my friends would be attending. I wasn't a big party person, despite my extroverted personality, so Kendall walked beside me so I could find where I was going.

"Are you excited to actually go to a party for the first time in ever?" She asked me.

"Hey," I crossed my arms, the grocery bags hitting my sides. "I've been to parties before."

"Your Aunt May's fiftieth doesn't count."

"We don't have an aunt named May, Kendall."

She reached over to me and pulled my beanie over my face.

"You're not proving your point," I said, muffled by the cloth. In response, a fist slammed into my arm.

@Moxie group

Abner

Yeah cause I go to a lot of secret orgies, I texted back, grinning to myself. I looked up just in time to stop myself from running into Alex, who had stopped in front of a house, waiting behind a small line of people. "Wow, there's a lot of people here." I turned to Alex. "Did you know it was gonna be this crowded?"

"Well, this guy's parties aren't always this crowded, but they do get like this from time to time," he said as we walked in. The foyer was mostly just filled with people trying to get inside. It wasn't exactly a banger. The bass wasn't pumping or anything and there weren't a bunch of kegs lying around. But there were definitely a few people, and they all looked like they were having a good time. I walked inside and quickly lost Alex to the crowd.

Jamie

I smiled at Violeta. "Of course I'm okay with that. That's why I offered." I stood up from my bed and grabbed my makeup bag off of my desk. "And don't worry about. Just know that I'm here for you." I resumed my position on my bed and sat cross-legged, patting the space in front of me. "Sit down. Do you want anything in particular?" I asked, smoothing out my dress. It was simple, black, to my knees, off the shoulder. I had almost forgotten that I had it until I pulled it out of my closet.

@blue_topaz

Violeta

I ignored my phone when it buzzed again, instead electing to smile at my roommate. “You look really good,” I complimented her honestly, taking in her appearance. “And thanks. Uhh not a thick layer, I guess. Something cute..?”

@Moxie group

Jamie

I smiled. "I can do cute." I opened her makeup bag, looking through it. I pulled out all of my base items, things I would use if I wanted a simple look, by my standards at least. "Do you want a more classic look?" I asked, looking up at Violeta. I held my hand under her chin, studying her face.

@blue_topaz

Violeta

I let my eyes drift shut, uttering a quiet “Sure” before relaxing into her touch. I was so tired…… I nearly fell asleep right then and there. To keep myself awake, I merely envisioned last night’s dream, calling up the image of a knife, trailing down my thigh.

Arwen

I groaned loudly as Ophelia pulled into parking lot near andrew (Our Supreme Lord and Overseer)’s flat, covering my face with my hands. “Do I have to go?”

Ophelia sighed. “Come on, Arwen, you promised. And you look so pretty!”

And in truth, I was happy with my appearance. A simple, white satin spaghetti-strap top (borrowed from my roommate) tucked into a black skater skirt with a pair of flats and hoop earrings to complete the look. My hair, for once, was down, left to spill over my shoulders. The front strands were pinned back loosely, which seemed to neaten it all and keep my face clear. I wore no makeup, but still… I felt nice. I felt confident.

@Euric_Knight

Ellam

I placed the grocery bags on a table, pulling out and opening the boxes inside. After taking one for myself, I tossed a juice bag to Kendall and then walked towards the center of the room, exchanging multiple "hi"s and "how are you"s with the other people.

Sawyer

Once we had arrived at the party, I booked it to the food, leaving Rowan in the dust, which was fine with both of us. He probably suspected I would leave him behind anyway.

I always loved going to andrew (Our Supreme Lord and Overseer)'s parties, I never had to deal with way too loud drunk people and if anyone was really rude they couldn't just blame it on alcohol the day afterwards. It also meant I wouldn't have to hear about my wonderful roommate's terrible hangover, and I wouldn't have to deal with my own.

My eyes landed on the boxes of Capri suns, my drug of choice. I stuffed four into the pockets of my hoodie before taking another and stabbing it with the straw.

@Moxie group

Jamie

I traced eyeliner over Violeta's eyes, making small wings. She didn't strike me as the type to have wings that went across half your face. I appreciated how good I had gotten at applying mascara as I put it on Violeta. I asked her to smile and put blush on her cheeks, and a shimmer of highlighter across her cheekbones. Violeta also didn't strike me as the type to have blinding highlighter, so I kept it low-key. "And . . . done." I leaned back to admire my handiwork and held a mirror up in front of her face. "What do you think? Should I add anything? Take anything away?"

Abner

I sat in the corner of a room, grabbing a chair. People were coming and going but this wasn't a rave. It was mellow. The perfect setting for some guy playing his guitar in the corner. No one around me even looked like they would pay any attention to me, which honestly, was fine by me. I pulled my guitar from its case and began to strum softly as people milled about.

@Euric_Knight

Ellam

My head perked up at the sound of a guitar.

"Who's playing?" Kendall asked from beside me.

I bent side to side to look. "I don't think I recognize him, I can't see him properly."

"Want to watch him?"

"Of course."

We made our way to the corner of the room to find a guy strumming his guitar. I may have had a class with him, because he seemed somewhat familiar.

Sawyer

A few people eyed me warily as I shoved chips with mountains of guac on them into my mouth.

I waved a chip at a guy who raised his eyebrows at me judgementally. "I'm living my best fuckin life, move along unless you wanna get in a food eating competition."

@Moxie group

Abner

I felt one or two people gather around me, or at least I assumed it was me. I refused to look up, though, because I knew that if I did, I would get spooked and either stop playing, or the quality of my playing would go down even more. So I played on, only looking at the strings of my guitar and my fingers moving over them.

@blue_topaz

Violeta

"It looks great," I answered Jamie softly, offering her a smile. "Thanks for helping me get ready. Do you need anything? I'm just going to change out of my shorts super quick, if that's okay with you."

Arwen

Ophelia ditched me as soon as we got to the party, slipping off to woo the first clueless guy she stumbled upon. I just drifted around, anxiety twisting my stomach. But, through all the chaos, the soft sound of strumming reached my ears. Curious, I approached the source of the music.. and my eyes landed on a very cute boy.

@Moxie group

Jamie

"Yeah, totally, go ahead," I said, putting my makeup stuff away. I stood and grabbed a silvery cropped bomber jacket from the closet while Violeta changed. "Hey, how far is it?" I called, looking at my shoes.

@blue_topaz

Violeta

“Uhh… maybe a fifteen minute walk?” I called over my shoulder, fishing a black skater skirt from my drawer and slinging it onto my shoulder. Before long, I was dressed in the skirt, a matching black tank top, and a bleached leather jacket decorated with pins and buttons on top.
