(Skip to the ice cream shop because yes, it would be a very quiet ride.)
(Okie doke.)
As soon as they were parked, Amber unbuckled and climbed out of the car. She glanced back at William before making her way inside and looking at the different flavors. Maybe she would get something with chocolate… Ooh, or caramel… Or maybe both?
One of the employees looked up at them, a polite smile on his features.
“Hello, what can I get you?” He questioned politely, the smile still on his face.
William looked at Amber, who was still contemplating what to get. He sighed. How long would it take for her to decide on a simple flavor?
Amber chewed on her lip as she decided, then looked up at the guy. “I’ll take a waffle cone of the caramel chocolate ice cream, please,” she ordered before stpppng back to let William order.
“All right, what about you?” The employee smiled. William wanted to wipe it off of his face.
“Mint chocolate chip,” he said after a while. “Medium cup.”
The employer nodded before he began to work on Amber’s ice cream. William stepped away, letting others order as well.
(Geez, Will, chill…)
“I still don’t know why you’re doing this,” Amber muttered while they waited, refusing to meet his eye.
(He’ll get better. XD)
William stuffed his hands in his pockets, staring at the employer as he worked.
“I’m not going to demand something in return,” he muttered. “This is not a favor.”
“I didn’t ask if it was a favor. I wanted to know why you’re doing this,” Amber sighed, looking at him out of the corner of her eye.
“I don’t know,” William shrugged, behaving nonchalant. “So you’d feel better, I guess.”
The employer was done with Amber’s ice cream and left it on the counter so she’d grab it. He went to complete William’s order without sparing them a glance.
Amber picked up her ice cream and licked it, looking away thoughtfully.
“Why would you care, though? You hate me,” she reminded him.
William turned his gaze away.
“Maybe I’m trying to creep you out so you’d move out,” he shrugged, fixing his eyes on the ground. “Now that you know my secret… perhaps I’m going to treat you to ice cream before I murder you in your sleep.”
Amber smirked a little and looked over at him again, tasing her eyebrows. “But you’re not. I can tell. If you were doing that, you wouldn’t tell me, first of all. Secondly, it’s not creepy, just confusing.”
William locked eyes with her, a small smirk on his features.
“And why wouldn’t I tell you?” He inquired. “What would telling you change?”
“Telling me would mean letting me be prepared. If you told me you were going to kill me, I’d obviously prepare myself. Unless, of course, I just flat out didn’t believe you,” Amber said with a shrug before going back to licking her ice cream.
“Why? Don’t I look like someone who could kill you?” William chuckled, shaking his head. “What if I like games, Blue? What if I like my victims prepared, so it makes the game far more interesting?”
“I never said you didn’t,” Amber said with shrug. “And maybe you do like that, but maybe you’re just trying to avoid the question.”
“And what is that question I’m trying to avoid?” William gave her an amused smile before his eyes shifted to the the employer. He walked over to get his ice cream, taking out his wallet and paying before he walked back towards Amber.
"Why are you really doing this for me?" Amber asked with a sigh.
William stared at her for a while before he sighed, taking a spoonful of ice cream in his mouth. He swallowed slowly.
“I don’t know,” he answered honestly. “I’m wondering that myself, actually. Why am I doing this for someone who told me I haven’t been trying?”
Amber stared at him over her ice cream cone, her eyebrows drawing together slightly. "You think I meant you haven't been trying…? Oh. That's— That's not what I meant by that," she muttered, looking down at her cone.
William gave her a look before going back to eating his own ice cream. It pissed him off. It wasn’t the first time he had been told that, but it never failed to set him off.
“Whatever,” he muttered. “You want to stay in here, or leave?”
"I don't want to go back yet… I'll just end up drowning myself in tears if I'm left alone," Amber mumbled, refusing to meet his eye. "Better to be in public where I refuse to break down crying."
William looked down at her before he sighed. Where was he even going with this? This girl… this girl was truly an annoyance, but what was more annoying was the fact that he didn’t mind it.
“Come,” he motioned to her. “Let’s walk.”
Amber looked up at William and raised her eyebrows. She looked pointedly down at her ice cream, then outside, and then back to her roommate.
"It's freezing cold outside and we're eating ice cream… Does that really seem like a good combination?" she questioned him.
William stared her down, refusing to break eye contact.
“It does, actually,” he responded, eating another mouthful. “But if you aren’t willing, that’s fine. Let’s sit.”
