There are several orders of magical creatures, all the way from the great witches and warlocks at the top to the shifters at the bottom. Every creature in this magical realm, secret from the plain humans going about their days, has the potential for some magic, as limited as it is for some. However, magic comes with a price. Any kind of spell causing harm to its intended target destroys something in the user, and creation can do the opposite (not healing, per se, more like giving the user antennae or something mostly useless and odd-looking), however there are species which are designed to heal.
Anyway, every year on the winter solstice, there is a ball to which all of the higher orders are invited. They may bring their servants or pets with them if they wish, and always it is a night of revelry and excitement, but there is danger lurking around every corner.
At this ball, many nobles or those in the higher orders meet their soulmate, who they recognize by the aura that surrounds them. But what if your soulmate wasn't of a higher order? What if they're a shifter whose time is almost up?

So, basically, my character is a shifter who is bound to a powerful witch. (In this story, shifters are animals that have been given the power to shift to human form by their witch or warlock. They are bound to their creator until they die. Shifters only live as long as their animal form allows, though there are some ways to extend that, difficult as they may be to attain.)
Only members of the higher orders (like witches, warlocks, fae, etc.) are supposed to have soulmates, until now. Your character is from a higher order (you can be as creative as you want with exactly species they are) and is my character's soulmate. So our characters have to hide their status of soulmates from everyone for as long as possible, all the while the clock is ticking on my character's life.

My character is going to be a girl, and I'd prefer for this RP that your character is a boy. There may be some dark parts, but nothing too steamy since it makes me uncomfy. Swearing is fine. I may ask you to write something before I allow you to join, and if you have any questions, feel free to ask. :)

Eloise hated the Solstice Ball. She had been forced to attend last year, and she didn’t love it any more now. She frowned at her reflection in one of the sweeping windows of the beautiful ballroom. Her long hair was tied back in a plait with a silk ribbon and she was wearing a plain gray dress with a frilly white apron that matched her ribbon. On her feet were black Mary Janes and on her face, a scowl.
She quickly fixed her expression into a blank one, averting her eyes as people passed. She was a serving girl here, nothing more. She sighed and went to give the higher-ranking creatures wine from the silver serving tray carefully balanced on her left hand.

Cypher was bored. Like really really bored. Since his father has passed on the title of King to him, he had been forced to attend countless balls and formal events. He didnt like them any better than he had when he attended them alongside his father as a child. Even now he could see the children of many witches, dragons, and other high ranking supernaturals, flitting in between the many adults, laughing and playing. He smiled wistfully at his own memories but that smile was wiped off his face by the appearance of the neighbouring kingdom's now retired king.

King Constell, retired king of the sea nymphs, had been trying to set Cypher and his daughter, Eliysia, to get married but as old as Cypher was, he had no plans on getting married. "Cypher my boy! Why are you standing here so lonely, my daughter needs a dance partner, go show her a good time!" He said, sounding as though he had had one drink to many. "Constell, with all due respect, I am now king whereas you have retured your title, address me with respect. As I have mentioned far too many times, I have no desire to get married so I would appreciate it if you stopped trying to force Eliysia onto me." He growled but like always, the Old King laughed at him and pushed him towards the Princess.

Eloise looked around the room for her best and only friend, Beck, who was another one of Ladonia’s shifters. While she was a rabbit, he was a house cat. It wasn’t easy to search for him while she was also carefully avoiding eye contact with the nobles giving her disdainful looks down their noses, when they even bothered to notice her in the first place, that was. Luckily for her, she had plenty of practice at it. Just as she spotted him, Ladonia stepped into her path. The witch gracefully plucked a drink off of Eloise’s tray.
“Don’t go getting yourself into trouble, now,” Ladonia reminded her patronizingly. Eloise gritted her teeth, but managed to keep a mostly pleasant expression on her face.
“Yes, madame,” Eloise said meekly.
“Good,” Ladonia responded. “Now, why don’t you go serve those noblemen over there?”
I’d really rather not, she thought, glancing their way. Aloud she said, “Yes, madame.” The witch sauntered off in her too-high heels and Eloise waited until she was out of sight amid the crush of bodies and whirl of skirts to search for Beck again.

Princess Eliysia wasn't a terrible dancer, nor was she bad mannered or bad looking. She just wasn't…interesting. Fae rules stated that only soulmates can be rulers or can be married but if the fae decides to get married to someone other than their mate, that is their decision. Fae live for quite a long time and considering that Cypher was also a sorcerer, he had quite the long life. "M'lady, your father sent me here to accompany to to the dance floor, will you accept my invitation?" He asked, trying very hard not to grit his teeth. The Princess, and the posse that surrounded her, burst into giggles as she curtsied. "Of course I accept King Cypher." She took his arm with such a firm grip that Cypher had a hard time believing she was a dainty sweet princess and not a knight.

As they came onto the dance floor, Cypher pretended to stumble and twist his ankle. "Oh!" He gasped and 'limped' to a nearby chair. "I seem to have twisted my ankle. I do apologise for not being able to dance with you, I understand if you want to go dance with someone else." Eliysia shook her head, "No Cypher, nine if the others meet my…requirments." she said, looking at him with an intese look in her eyes before calling for the server girl. "You there, bring two glasses of wine for us."

Eloise turned, frozen in her pursuit of Beck. Shit. This wasn’t supposed to happen, she thought frantically. She took a deep breath, trying to calm her toil of emotions before turning around. She walked over to the girl who had called for her meekly. She was a princess, wasn’t she? Being the among lowest order of magical creatures, Ladonia decided that her shifters weren’t worthy of knowing the goings-on of the royal courts, so Eloise had no clear idea.
As she approached the girl, dread filled her stomach. She usually tried to stay out of the way, making no more of an impression than a shadow.
Eloise curtsied and held the tray of wine glasses up to the girl, not saying a word like the dutiful serving girl she had to be.

Eliysia took a sip before putting the glass back with a sneer. "What is this stuff? Commoners beer?" She asked in a nasty voice. She then stated to talk down to the popr serving girl. It had been going on for a short while before Cypher let iut a growl, silencing her. "That is quite enough Mrs. Constell. I assure you this action will go unseen by the Council of Undersea Kingdoms." Eliysia let out a squeak and bowed her head in submission before quickly making up a excuse and scurrying away. Cypher took a sip from his glass before smiling and staring intently at the young girl infront of him. "I apologize for that m'lady."

While the surrounding public felt an odd desire to bow their head in submission, none did other than the girl towards whom it was intended. Now, red-faced and embarrassed, the young Nymph Princess rushed to her elder brother, the now King Picult Constell, to complain about her intended.

Eloise flushed, her face a deep crimson against her pale complexion. “I-it’s fine, sir,” she stammered. “I’ve heard worse. Do you want anything else or shall I go now?” While Eloise was the picture of a chastised, meek serving girl, inside she was seething. Where was Beck when she needed him?

@StarkSpangledMayflower_Mad_Elder

"I expect you to meet my gaze when I am talking. What is you name girl?" He asked

"…And then he forced me to submit!" The girl whined. Her brother was annoyed, more at her than the king because he was a friend, but gods he needed to let his annoyance free before he flipped out on someone else.

(I should ask, what time period is this? I've been going back and forth between past and present lmao)

@MusicElle-is-here

(present)

“I’m not normally supposed to look nobles in the eye,” Eloise replied, quiet venom in her tone that was hard to detect. She slowly looked up into his eyes, hers defiant under the careful layers of meekness. “My name is Eloise.”

@StarkSpangledMayflower_Mad_Elder

(ok, thanks)

The glass slipped from his hand as her eyes connected with his. A couple eyes flitted his way before going back to focus in whatever conversation they were a part of. Cypher wasnt sure if she was aware of what just happened but his abilities allowed him to view auras and links of different people. And right infront of him, his lonely, dull link and merged with this shy girls. "I'm sorry– I must go" he said and literally booked it from the scene of the crime.

His heart was yearning for him to go back and his consciousness tried to force him to go back, but Cypher restrained himself and tried to think through the situations of the night ti distract his soul.

What the stars just happened? Eloise thought as the boy rushed away. She wasn’t as stunning beautiful as the mermaids and fae he was used to, but she wasn’t that repulsive, was she? Her heart had skipped a beat, oddly, as their eyes met, but that probably didn’t mean anything. She scurried off, assuming she was dismissed, and found Beck.
“Oh thank the fae I found you!” she squealed to him.
