Ohhhhh I love them all
Charlie loved the afternoon. It too hot, not too cold. A warmth on Mama Nature could offer bathes you, cool winds tickle your skin. A gentle touch.
It was what he needed as he raced down the street, tearing through allies with bootleggers on his tail. He’d intercepted their batch of moonshine this time, these men were relentless. Lean dudes with builds for running. They had him jumping fences and making turns sharp enough to break someone’s neck. The only good thing was that they were so far up his rear end, they would possibly find their goods. All he had to do was stay alive long enough to relish the victory. So naturally, quick on his toes, Charlie leapt into the first opened window he could find, hitting the floor with a muffled groan. He remained there until he heard the sound of feet beating concrete, those nasty, two-legged hounds still on the run.
With a huff, Charlie sat up, peeking out the window to make sure they had moved on. “Thank you, Lord above.”
"Well hello there stranger." Mimi deadpanned as she took a long drag of her cigarette. She was playing the cool, aloof flapper, but it really wasn't every day that a boy jumped through one's open window. To say she was shocked would be an understatement, especially since she was technically in her underclothes. Most indecent of her. If mama could see me now… Mimi sent a quick kiss up to heaven, before raising a thick black brow at the boy before her.
Charlie winced at the sound of that voice, no matter how lovely it was. The scent of cigarette smoke filled his lungs as he turned to behold his witness. "Hello ma'am….." The greeting fell away as his eyes landed on the pale beauty before him. She looked none too pleased with a stranger in her home, much less a man. Tugging his collar loose so he could manage to breathe, Charlie stood and brushed off his clothes.
Play it cool and get out. He told himself. Clearing his throat, he gave a sheepish smile. "I'm sorry I dropped in like this. I was in a bit of 'situation'. Grace of heaven brought me here but I don't plan to stay long." There was a soft drawl in his voice.
Mimi laughed a bit too high to be considered casual, since she was still alarmed that a man had popped in for a spell. But she had a reputation to uphold and no way would anyone see her as meek, no matter how boyishly handsome the man before her was. "Hon, I don't think 'grace' was involved at all since it was my window that you came through."
She crossed her legs in an attempt to hide how unclothed she was–My god! I'm not even wearing stockings!–although by whatever whim Fate had dropped on her, she had put on a silky kimono robe shortly before lighting up her cigarette.
Charlie tried not to let their eyes wander. The woman wasn't wearing much, but he couldn't blame her since he'd intruded on her privacy. "Uh-huh." He hummed. As beautiful as the woman before him was, he had to stick to his plans of "sweet-talk-and-skedaddle". With one more glance out the window he looked back at the woman.
"You don't mind if I go out the way I came in do you, Miss…?"
"My my, what a scoundrel." Mimi said, smoke slithering out from her lips as she spoke. "Barging in on your escape from the cops, one would assume, and not even staying for tea." She tutted playfully, but held out her slim hand in greeting. "Warren. Mimi Warren. I would take the left alley instead of going down the street, the coppers won't look for you there, darling."
With a smirk, Charlie took her hand and kissed it. "It's a pleasure to meet you Miss Warren." He spoke, and found he truly meant it, looking into her deep blue eyes. Women like her were the ones his mama warned him of.
If you're not in the state for lovin', you'd better high-tail it right on out of there, Charlie. They play to win…
Letting go of Mimi's hand, he coughed before tucking his hand into his vest pocket. "A token of my appreciation." He remarked before offering her his card. "Consider it an 'I-owe-you' sort of thing. You like to party, don't you, Miss Warren?"
Mimi blinked slowly, as she took the card, unwilling to admit she was positively charmed by this stranger in her room. By sheer force of will, she kept her fair skin from blushing. She flicked it between her fingers, looking up at him through her lashes. "Oh honey you have no idea. Party is my middle name." Committing the address to memory Mimi, put the card into the pocket of her robe. "When will you be there next?"
Charlie beamed, showing off his pearly whites. "Well, that's just the business I specialize in. Can I offer you a exceptional night in exchange for your silence? We don't need the coppers to know I was here, that way I can come back…" Charlie suggested, crossing his arms. "–Appropriately, the next time, of course."
Mimi wanted to say how if he ever came back to her rooms again, it would not be under any circumstances that would be deemed as 'appropriate', but she figured that would be a little too much for a first conversation. "I am no friend of the coppers, darling. You needn't worry about that." She gave him one of her rare genuinely sweet smiles. "But I will take you up on that offer for a good time."
Charlie knew he could've stayed right there, no food, no water, nothin' but her smile — He'd be fine. But he also knew he had to be heading back now. So with some unearthly effort, he tore his gaze away from her and gave her a nod as he glanced out the window.
"I'll pick you up tonight. You'll come to find, Ms. Warren, I'm a man of my word." With the tip of his hat, Charlie made fast work to climb out the window once more. Looking up to his new lady friend, he fave her an easy smirk. "Around nine, be dressed to impress."
Mimi had stood, as Charlie climbed out her window, and was now leaning against her window frame, gazing down at him. A mischievous smile now gracing her sinful mouth, somehow at odds with the manic glint in her eyes. She gestured to her outfit, or rather, the lack thereof, with her hand holding the cigarette, smoke swirling about her frame. "Darling I'm always dressed to impress." Mimi gave Charlie a final wink, before shutting her curtains with a flourish.
Peaking through the side opening, so he wouldn't see her, Mimi felt her entire form flush. He had turned to leave already, so she was getting a nice view of all his assets… She laughed quietly to herself. It had been awhile since anyone had made her feel so lively and here he was just dropping into her window like a damn miracle from God.
Mimi hoped that this Charlie was as devilish as he appeared.
It took all his might for Charlie not to look back, just to see if she was watching. If she was, he'd give her a wave, but if she wasn't….. Then he'd have to turn around and get another glimpse of her pretty face. Not that he would forget it — Oh no, he would never. But something about the way she smiled at him, with the Devil's color on her lips…. It had him hypnotized.
Shaking his head, Charlie broke into a jog and took the left alley as she instructed. He picked up his newfound 'cargo' not to long after and hightailed it home. Everything had to be perfect tonight, especially for Mimi Warren. After all, Charlie was a man of his word, and he had a good time to deliver.
Chess threw open another window, taking in the cooler air from outside. Heat puffed from the small apartment he was stuffed into. A piano, drum set, cello, and trumpet. Grown men playing with their all, sweating like sinners in a sunday service. And this was just supposed to be practice.
“Chess, we need our drums, baby!” A voice called from inside, followed by hoots and shouts of agreement. Chess sighed and ducked back in.
“Next time, we go to Mama Valentine’s to practice. At least we get more room there.” He muttered, picking up his sticks. "Not tonight we won't." Johnny, the pianist groaned. The rest joined in with him. For a bunch that spend their lives playing tunes, they complained a lot.
Bonnie just laughed. Her eyes shimmered and she tilted her head back slightly, exposing the creamy mocha of her neck. Chess would never admit it, but her laugh stole his heart every time. There was nothing she couldn't have with a gentle jiggle of her shoulders. Heck, the sun would shine on a rainy day just to hear that sweet, sweet sound. .
“Stop ya’ whinin’. We’d be done by now if y’all could stop bellyachin’ for two seconds.” She wagged a finger at her band, all in jest.
“How about this? We go through the last song, then you can join the others down at Mama's. Get some grub. I have to leave soon anyway.” She moved towards the piano, leaning against it. They seemed to agree on that.
Bonnie had to secure a certain someone would be attending the shindig tonight. Charlie got the drinks, it was her job to gather the socialites and benefactors. Tonight would be the biggest they'd ever seen. Everything had to be perfect.
Including her band.
She knocked on the piano, pounding out the beat of the final song they'd play that night. It was her favorite.
The band picked up, starting with trumpets blaring. Bonnie let the music fill her, her hips swayed as she stepped to the mic.
~I want to be around to pick up the pieces
When somebody breaks your heart
Some somebody twice as smart as~I
Her voice carried out the window and down the streets, filling the ears of passers with some sweet and scandalous at the same time. They could feel the soft whisper of mockery in her words as she sang the first and second verse. They shared in her victory as the chorus swelled, her voice gaining a little growl as she belted her satisfaction.
~And that's when I'll discover that revenge is sweet
As I sit there applauding from a front-row seat
When somebody breaks your heart
Like you, like you broke mine~
