The first chapter book we read in french class is Le Petit Prince! You can also try to find children's books translated into French (the Madeline books are originally in french, so they might be a good choice, too).
It helped me reading books I had already read in English. Because in the end, most of the vocab you learn is by context, and if you srot of know what should be going on, it's not as frustrating to read, and makes it an even better feeling when you do understand something immediately… I read the Lightning Thief in French, because Rick Riordan uses relatively simple language and translators generally try to recreate that sort of thing. While it took a long time (a month at least?), it was very fun and also the only reason I ever read the rest of the Percy Jackson series…
