Steam's Summer Sale just went live (RIP my wallet). Anyone finding any hidden gems, and/or have games they've had their eye on for a while?
I bought an HTC Vive a while back that I've sunk many, many hours into, so I'll be keeping an eye out for nice VR games on sale, but I'm also a sucker for good RPGs and simulators.
I'd totally recommend A Hat in Time! I got it for Christmas for about $30, but right now it's $20 for a love letter to nostalgic Nintendo fans. It's super adorable and charming, and reminds me of Super Mario Sunshine and other classics. One level in particular may come as a shock for some people expecting a purely cute game, though;
Spoiler - click to show.
there's a horror-themed level that made me feel a little spooked, but it's only one, and there's a secret shortcut; in Act 4 Chapter 3, Queen Vanessa's Manor, in the first basement room with the key, you can crouch between the farthest and second barrel on the left to entirely skip the horror elements and finish the level.
Another dandy find is Reigns, a quirky game where you play as a king who tends to a needy society by swiping left and right to different scenarios like a royal Tinder app. It's witty when it wants to be, and I had a blast going on endless crusades and marrying everyone I could, but a lot of the fun comes from seeing it yourself. It's been reduced from $3 to $1.49 for the sale, and is also a smartphone app, so no real skin off your back if you miss the 50% discount, though I'd so advise getting it. It's also got a sequel, Reigns: Her Majesty where you play as a queen- I haven't bought this one yet, but I've got my eye on it.
There's also a surprisingly good dating simulator for $7.49, Dream Daddy. you play as a single dad who supports his teenage daughter Amanda and tries to woo one of the other cute gay dads on your cul-de-sac. It's important to note that despite some character development scenes, it's not going to be a deep, introspective read, which was a bit of a shock for me after playing Asagao Academy (free download online, very good dating sim about dating Youtubers in a boarding school which is honestly so well-written I couldn't recommend it enough). But what it lacks in deep metaphors it makes up in a rare kind of charm I never knew I needed and a goofy, funny narrative.
All of these are available on Windows and Mac! Very good buys! I can't recommend them enough and I've sent so much of my life playing these.
