When I tell people that I'm writing a novel, most give me a strange look and say "Wow! Good for you. I've never thought about writing one before." When I ask them why not, they give me answers like, "I don't have a story to tell." or "It's just so hard." or "Doesn't sound fun."
That got me thinking. Why do I write?
I write because I've spent so long with stories running through my head that I finally wanted to get one out in the open. I write because I like to read stories of broken people finding healing and seeing the world in a new light, so I wanted to write my own.

I write because there is something satisfying about creating something that didn't exist 2 hours ago. I write to give myself an outlet and times, and one day I hope somebody reads it as an outlet.

Hi Girly!
I write as a way of processing. I've always thought that the written word has this incredible power to take the internal sights, thoughts, fears, biases etc. of a person and pass them onto the reader (no matter who the writer is, where they are from, or how long they've been dead). The ability take something as flimsy and fleeting as a thought and contain it on a page is simply magical. That and I'm the kind of person that if I have an idea, it will nag me until I can put it down. It's almost as if an idea has a life of its own an if I don't write it, it will fade into nothingness.

A Name With No Girl

All of the above basically.
I have some stories, ideas and feelings I want to tell and convey and it is a way of expression as well as a way of dealing with emotion and processing themes and dilemas.
Also, it's one more way to get attention and to share something from yourself, just like talking with people.

@Yamatsu

I write because the Four Book Epic With Dragons, Wyverns, Humans, and Political Intrigue Mixed With Magic won't write itself!

@LJ

Honestly I've asked myself this a lot recently. I think I write because there's just some part of me that just wants to burst out onto a page. I get joy from writing intricate characters and new worlds.

I write for two reasons. Reason one is that it helps me cope with my OCD, which at times gets really bad. The second is rather sad. I'm homeschooled and don't have many friends who aren't online, so my characters effectively become my friends and I live vicariously through them.

I write because I have many stories in my head (my dreams always come out in coherent stories as well) and no one will ever be able to write them the way I know they need to be written

I write because

  1. I relate, I have a lot of stories that I think the world should see
  2. It's my defense mechanism; I experience something, I twist and decorate it, and then I write it out.
  3. The idea of invoking emotions into the reader is absolutely wild to me. I wanna do that.
  4. When I read, often times it inspires me. Either it caused an idea to formulate in my head, or I want to try this idea in my own way.
  5. As an artist, I look at a lot of things in the world and say 'that's just another form of art.' Writing is just another form of art. Sometimes drawing something doesn't convey what I'm trying to communicate; sometimes words are more effective.
  6. Often times I write out of boredom or to pass the time. Even if I'm not writing about anything in particular.

@NobleWolf

I write because there's something satisfying about being in control of an entire world, and everything in it. And I want people to read my stories and be impressed that I came up with it all on my own.
