For this sci-fi novel I'm writing, I decided to utilize the names of certain mythological creatures, urban legends, etc. for different creatures and aliens. As an example, in this world there exists a rat-like animal which resides in dark places (usually caves), I called it Nosferatu, it uses its proboscis-like mouth to suck blood and other things, similar to the vampire (but still very different).
Another species I created was the Toge, which I based off of the Oni, Japanese mythological demons/ ogres.
I am creating my own species not inspired by or named after these mythological creatures, I don't want to limit myself on what I can do based off of some text from hundreds of years ago.
I'd like to get some opinions on this approach. What do you guys think? Is it inappropriate for a sci-fi? Are there any issues you fear may come into the story because of this?

I mean, we named planets in the solar system after gods. Constellations, galaxies, etc., I think you're fine at this point. NASA is filled with mythology nerds, they named a Jupiter-bound satellite Juno so it could take pictures of the planet's moons (also named after the king's many wives).
