Below will be some of the ideas I have for a story I am working on; I'm not yet sure how long I will make it.

PLOT/FRAMEWORK

Late into the year 2054, large cracks and sinkholes were appearing in the ground, in places all over the world. These cracks and holes were revealed to have large, cavernous areas beneath them, with the cracks themselves being several feet deep. In the year 2089 and when they began to become a problem, the sinkholes were looked into more closely. One year after, creatures began emerging from these holes and were contained as they appeared.
Just two years after exploring the cavernous areas, the creatures that were emerging soon became too difficult to deal with and spread. This led to panic as larger things began to make their way into the cities, one of which being the Arafem.

The Domes:

Large, cracking biodomes underground, usually around mountainous areas

Domes were covered up many of years ago due to inactivity on the outside

Domes crack because of the pressure applied to them

Inside the domes are the animals that were considered to be beautiful when the domes were built

Domes are made of metal and wood frames with thick glass plates covering them in squares

Most of the animals inside the domes are very large, as many of them were when the domes were created

The domes are cracking since they have been neglected for so long. This has caused the wood to rot and the glass plates to crack, allowing what was once inside the chance to get out

Creatures Held Inside the Domes:

Imitan- Large creatures, typically the size of huskies with long bodies and wings that branch off of their arms, similar to a bat’s. Their faces are broad and their noses are in a half moon shape (comparable to that of a big cat’s). Typically, an Imitan’s eyes will be narrow and long, appearing to be yellow or brown with round pupils. Their wings are quite large compared to their bodies, and are covered in large feathers that tend to be five to eight inches long at their largest; their bodies are short furred in colors of brown, white, black, yellow, and grey. In addition, the Imitan are predators and were once kept in warm, treed domes; they are also known to mimic what they are hunting as a means of attracting it. The species name is a variation of the Latin word for, “Imitate”.

Arafem- Pale, spindly and cloaked women with long, shiny black hair. Their skin appears to be tinted, though the color varies. At first glance, they appear to be pretty women wearing thick, darkly colored robes. However, under these robes are eight legs (such as that of a spider) that are covered in leaky holes. The liquid that appears from these boils can cause severe burns and can warp certain metals. In the few cases that they are without their robes, vibrantly colored patterns can be seen on their backs and arms; their eyes are solidly colored with their pupils being barely visible. They were usually kept in damp, dark areas of the biodomes. The species name comes from the two Latin words meaning, “Spider-woman”.

Aviden- Long furred animals comparable in size to animals such as giraffes, the exception being that their legs aren’t quite as thin. Their necks are maned with fur that tends to be more colorful and vibrant than the rest of the fur on their bodies. Having dragon-like faces, the very ends of their muzzles are covered in scales and their eyes are ovular and house large circular pupils. Their tails, similarly to certain areas of their faces, have spatterings of colorful scales. These animals were kept in lakes and rivers and eat mostly large water birds. The species name comes from the two Latin words meaning, “Bird eater”.

Clothing and Other Information

Based off of clothing in the Victorian Era
Close in relation to social status, occupation, etc.
Mostly gender neutral
Commonly black, white, blue, red, or purple among those of importance
Commonly yellow, grey, brown, black, or green among those of middle or lower class
Cars are no longer made but are kept as decorations by the wealthy
Coaches and wagons are used once again along with horses
Witches are common
Magic is a normal concept
Entire libraries are dedicated to the events leading to the “New Era”
The dome openings are guarded by witches and wizards
The money consists of silver coins (coins of 10), steel coins (coins of 5), brass coins (coins of 2), and pressed gold slips (slips of 15)
Ingots are worth their weight in the metal their coin is made of; ex. One 15 lb gold ingot would be worth 225 gold slips
Houses are made of the usual materials, metal, and wood
Leather is the main material used for shoes

CHARACTER(s)

Florence Bren Ellis (Main)- 5’4” ft tall and 127 lbs, Florence has mid-back length hair that is red-brown in color with straight across bangs. Her skin is tanned and across the bridge of her nose are barely visible freckles; her eyes are dull green. Usually, she can be seen wearing black skinny jeans, a partial corest (one that only covers her stomach and back), and a white long sleeve button up shirt. Her shoes are usually black boots. (This is the Remedies Shop uniform)
Her job is as a witch dealing with remedies, however, recently she has been assigned to a post guarding the Northern Breach of the Eastern Calvistian Dome.

Sariel- Florence’s familiar, a large, long furred grey cat with two tails and yellow eyes. Met Florence in the dome she was assigned to guard.

Zachariah Wood- 5’10” ft tall and 143 lbs, Zachariah has short, wavy blonde hair that is parted to his left. His skin is pale because of constantly wearing the Council’s uniform. As stated, he can almost always be seen wearing the messenger uniform for the Council for Otherworldly Affairs, which is a pair of high waisted black jeans, a dark red button-up shirt (long sleeved) and a pair of (almost) knee-length black lace-up boots. Zachariah carries with him a light brown messenger bag that the Council has equipped him with.

Elizabeth Pointer- 5’3” ft tall and 125 lbs, Elizabeth has bobbed hazel colored hair that is parted in the center. Her skin is tawny in color, with the only blemishes being scars on her hands; her eyes are dark brown. She is most often seen wearing her Dome Guard uniform, issued by the Council for Otherworldly Affairs. The uniform consists of high waisted black jeans, a white button-up shirt, a waist cut dark red jacket, and calf length black lace-up boots.

Violet Flores- 5’10 and 140 lbs, Violet has thick black hair with bangs that are cut straight across and skin that is fair in tone. Usually, she can be seen wearing black skinny jeans, a partial corest (one that only covers her stomach and back), and a white long sleeve button up shirt. Her shoes are usually black boots. (This is the Remedies Shop uniform).

ORGANIZATION(s)/BUSINESS(s)

The Council for Otherworldly Affairs- A council/committee comprised of 20 different witches and warlocks who keep an eye on the “Dome Situation”. They classify the cracks and holes in the Domes as Breaches and make sure that each Breach is accounted for and has guards and gates. On the Council are a number of people with extensive knowledge about the New Era that isn’t presented to the public. Despite the general public not being aware of the information itself, many of them know that the Council keeps it under lock and key.

Black Cat Remedies- A circular building that sits a little apart from the rest of the shops beside it. The outside of the building is made of brown bricks, which almost always stay fully painted, while the inside of the shop has a polished hardwood floor with a brown granite counter/front desk. The walls are lined with colorful bottles full of different liquid remedies, and books containing healing methods using easy magic. The only two employees are Violet and Florence, who have been friends since they were children.

Most of the "action" I guess you could call it is going to be included when I map the parts of the story. And (though I am now seeing that I forgot to include this) the creatures at the point when the story starts have been around for years, so long that it has started to be considered usual; the domes cracked because of pressure applied to them, and because they weren't being cared for anymore. This caused the wood to rot and the glass plates to crack.

Thanks, I'm glad to hear it! I'm actually going to use this in a writing competition, though everything is due on the 11th…In any case, I'm going to keep working on this even if I can't finish a short story version of it before then.

@KoffeeOwl

Also, to anyone else who has read this, I would really appreciate any title suggestions that you have. These are the titles I have managed to come up with so far:

  • Under the Glass
  • What's Inside
  • The Dome

Out of the entire writing process, this has to be what I am the worst at.

@Yamatsu

The world you've got going on seems good, I could personally use a bit more detail in the magic section. However, I feel that you have things figured out (and probably a few more creatures up your sleeve). I'm assuming this functions off of the Gregorian calendar, making this a "future fantasy" kind of genre. The only issue I have is why technology has regressed considering the fact that you now have magic. Instead of fuel, you could have magically-powered cars or a way for engineers to go inside the domes and fix them without being overrun. Even then, you could just sic the military on them and use whatever fancy tech they have at that era. According to Xenoblade Chronicles X, we have mechs and lightspeed travel by 2054! Now imagine that with MAGIC!

@KoffeeOwl

I was actually thinking about this earlier today. I have an idea for something simple such as power, which would involve drawing it from a certain water-dwelling creature that produces small amounts of electricity when alone, but large amounts when grouped. They could be kept in large tanks or lakes for each city to draw electricity from, but this is just an idea.
And as far as why the military was overrun so easily, I have plans for this as well. I have a few ideas for dragonlike creatures about as big (if not bigger) than the one I mentioned above that would have added to the difficulty of containing the new animals. Plus, when making the basics for this I used public disorder as a kind of crutch for explaining things.
