I've only really loved someone once. Shame is, I had never had the chance to meet them in person…
Anyways, can anyone spare some tips on how to write a forming relationship between two characters. I'm too pathetic to trust my gut on this one.
Alright, so yeah when people who are unexperienced with romance, they usually end up writing something extremely idealistic and it distracts from the story, so what you're probably gonna want to do is just put yourself in one of your character's shoes and look at the other character the way that they would, not the way you'd want someone to look at you. Separate out the things that your characters love about one another from the things that they deem faults about the other person (because no one truly thinks anyone else is perfect even though they might think the world of them). Make sure not to rush anything if the relationship is not already established. Keep in mind that two people who like each other but aren't yet together are gonna be super awkward around each other, not cool or suave. Whereas people who have been in a relationship for a long time are likely to not have many boundaries and will be very comfortable in the other person's presence as long as they aren't having any relationship issues, but also won't be cool or suave because their guards will be lowered.
Interview literally everyone in your life that's ever had/has a relationship. Do not look to pop culture, since it's often unrealistic.
And remember these two things: relationships are both messy and dumb. Messy in that you'll both have moments where you screw up, or when you're both fumbling around because you're unsure. Dumb because sometimes you just play Monopoly or eat Cheetos together for an hour.
Both of these sound really solid and make a lot more sense. Thank you both :)
