Okay, so I'm getting all my pointers from overly sarcastic productions' video about writing good villains (there's a few actually). So if you also want to check out that they also make other really well made videos about other writing tropes and how to write good characters.

Okay so first off, it depends on whether or not you're trying to write a complex villain/antagonist or a pure evil villain. Though pure evil is easier to write I find myself often writing complex villains because I find them more relatable and interesting. Plus I can't create a character I can't like. So the first thing that makes a villain complex or pure evil is their intention or motive. A pure evil villain will have a simple motive, a complex villain will have a complex motive. Realize with the complex villain they never think that they are doing anything wrong. They believe that what they are doing is for the better of the majority of the world. A pure evil villain will do something more for themselves, or just for the pure fun of it. For example a pure evil villain might do something for greed or power, where as the complex villain will do it because they think that what they are doing is right. A pure evil villain is normally self obsessed, being that they don't have a care for anything but themselves. A complex villain will be just the oposite. a complex villain normally has a sad backstory to justify their actions or beleifs. Normally the complex villain will be relateable, and sometimes redemable. And instead of being relateable the pure evil villain will be fun to hate and fun to root for. So that your reader will love to see them become strong and powerful, but at the same time their down fall will be just as fun.
